Background: Myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) are hypersensitive nodules in a taut band (TB) of skeletal muscle. Dry needling (DN) is an invasive technique recommended for the treatment of MTrPs. However, to our knowledge, no studies have investigated the influence of the DN technique on modification of muscle stiffness and neurophysiological properties of MTrPs.

A critical overview of the current myofascial pain literature - January 2021.

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS), trigger points (TrPs), and dry needling (DN) continue to be of interest to researchers and clinicians worldwide. In this quarterly overview, we included studies from 19 countries, including Pakistan, Iran, Spain, Israel, the US, Australia, Turkey, the UK, China, Italy, Germany, Brazil, Denmark, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, India, New Zealand, and Thailand. As encouraging as it may be that myofascial pain is being considered worldwide, it is frustrating how many studies do not include a proper control group making them not very useful.

The effect of vibration therapy on neck myofascial trigger points: A randomized controlled pilot study.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of low-frequency self-administered vibration therapy into myofascial trigger points in the upper trapezius and levator scapulae on patients with chronic non-specific neck pain.

Methods: Twenty-eight patients with chronic non-specific neck pain were randomly assigned into a vibration group, receiving 10 self-applied sessions of vibration therapy in the upper trapezius and levator scapulae trigger points; or a control group, receiving no intervention. Self-reported neck pain and disability (Neck Disability Index) and pressure pain threshold were assessed at baseline and after the first, fifth and 10th treatment sessions.

: Prudent dry needling techniques are commonly practiced with the intent to avoid large neurovascular structures, thereby minimizing potential excessive bleeding and neural injury. Patient position is one factor thought to affect the size of the safe zone during dry needling of some muscles. This study aimed to compare the size of the needle safe zone of the iliacus muscle during two different patient positions using ultrasound imaging.

Experimental myofascial trigger point creation in rodents.

Myofascial pain syndrome is one of the most common forms of muscle pain. In this syndrome, pain is originated by the so-called trigger points, which consists of a set of palpable contraction knots in the muscle. It has been proposed that a high, spontaneous neurotransmission may be involved in the generation of these contraction knots.

Effects of spray and stretch on postneedling soreness and sensitivity after dry needling of a latent myofascial trigger point.

Objectives: To investigate (1) the effect of spray and stretch versus control on reducing postneedling soreness of 1 latent myofascial trigger point (MTrP) and (2) whether higher levels of psychological distress are associated with increased postneedling pain intensity.

Efficacy of myofascial trigger point dry needling in the prevention of pain after total knee arthroplasty: a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial.

The aim of this study was to determine whether the dry needling of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) is superior to placebo in the prevention of pain after total knee arthroplasty. Forty subjects were randomised to a true dry needling group (T) or to a sham group (S). All were examined for MTrPs by an experienced physical therapist 4-5 hours before surgery.

The NEMS and APACHE II scales allow us to objectively determine the therapeutic effort and severity level of the patients admitted to the unit. With the use of both scales, we aimed to control our work quality, comparing the results obtained with various measurements.

[Results of the performance of percutaneous coronary revascularization procedures without the presence of heart surgery].

The offer of percutaneous coronary revascularization procedures has extended over a large number of health care sites including those that do not have heart surgery. This phenomenon is related with the favorable results of the coronary angioplasty in the treatment of acute coronary syndrome, reported in the scientific literature, above all after the appearance of the coronary stent and the new antiaggregant drugs. In order to offer the primary angioplasty to the population as a treatment that is more effective than drug revascularization, sites having coronary interventionism without heart surgery and sometimes with low volume of patients per year have proliferated.

Surgical-glove-related diffuse lamellar keratitis after laser in situ keratomileusis: long-term outcomes.

Purpose: To study the long-term refractive results in eyes that developed surgical-glove-related diffuse lamellar keratitis (DLK) after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK).

Setting: Department of Ophthalmology, Hospital Provincial, Toledo, Spain.

Methods: This retrospective review analyzed an epidemic of surgical-glove-related DLK over a 5-month period at a single hospital.

Possible branchiogenic carcinoma coinciding with metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma.

We report the discovery of a cystic lesion of flat lining epithelium with areas of squamous carcinoma, associated with metastatic cervical nodes of a papillary thyroid cancer, and discuss the diagnostic possibilities.

[Ectopic cerebral tissue in the middle ear. A case report].

A case of cerebral ectopy in the middle ear of a 50-year-old woman is reported. We emphasize three elements: the anodyne clinical manifestations, high risk, and the importance of high-resolution CT and exploratory tympanotomy in diagnosis and treatment.
