Background: Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked disorder of glycosphingolipid catabolism caused by a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme alpha-galactosidase A (GLA). FD is still an underdiagnosed disorder worldwide. Moreover, there is delay between symptom onset and Fabry diagnosis of at least 10 years.

Impact of environmental pollution on the ocular surface of Sjögren's syndrome patients.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of air pollution on the ocular surface of patients with Sjögren's syndrome.

Methods: We investigated the ocular surfaces of thirty patients with Sjögren's syndrome and thirty healthy volunteers (control group) living in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires. We used nitrogen dioxide as an indicator of exposure to air pollution.

Hyponatremia: a new predictor of mortality in patients with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Objectives: (1) Evaluate mortality rate in patients with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli hemolytic uremic syndrome, (2) determine the leading causes of death, and (3) identify predictors of mortality at hospital admission.

Methods: We conducted a multicentric, observational, retrospective, cross-sectional study. It included patients under 18 years old with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli hemolytic uremic syndrome hospitalized between January 2005 and June 2016.

The neurocranium of hominid species has been largely studied with reference to the midsagittal plane, with variations being attributed to brain evolution. By contrast, there is limited information on variation in non-midsagittal regions, which are the points of insertion of muscles and bony structures related to mastication. This work aims to analyze ontogenetic changes and sexual dimorphism (SD) in midsagittal and non-midsagittal neurocranial structures from a contemporary human sample comprising 138 computed tomography (CT) cranial images of individuals ranging from infants to adults.

The Outcome of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury in Latin America.

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) disproportionately affects lower- and middle-income countries (LMIC). The factors influencing outcomes in LMIC have not been examined as rigorously as in higher-income countries.

Methods: This study was conducted to examine clinical and demographic factors influencing TBI outcomes in Latin American LMIC.

Prevalence of Fabry Disease in Young Patients with Stroke in Argentina.

Background: Fabry disease (FD) is an underdiagnosed cause of stroke in young adults, but the frequency of this association is largely unknown. We estimated the prevalence of FD in a nationwide cohort of young adults who had stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) in Argentina.

Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter study of stroke and FD in young adults (18-55 years) conducted in Argentina between 2011 and 2015.

Spirometry reference values for an andean high-altitude population.

Unlabelled: We compared the spirometric values of people living at High Altitude at the Andean Plateau with those predicted for lowland population.

Rationale: Spirometry reference values are not yet available for the millions of people living at high altitude in the Andean High Plateau.

Objective: To obtain spirometric prediction equations from a healthy subset of adults living in Argentina at 3440m above sea level.

[Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis: role of GM-CSF Antibodies].

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis is a rare illness characterized by alterations in the normal depuration of surfactants from the alveolar space in a process dependent of the granulocyte-monocyte colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF). The most of the patients develop antibodies that neutralize this factor, avoiding the normal homeostasis of surfactants. Therapeutic options include the total lung washes and administration of GM-CSF when the washes fail.

Post-ERCP pancreatitis: early precut or pancreatic duct stent? A multicenter, randomized-controlled trial and cost-effectiveness analysis.

Background: Pancreatitis is the most frequent complication due to ERCP. Pancreatic duct stent placement has been described as a preventive measure. There is also evidence pointing towards the preventive effect that early precut may provide.

Minimally invasive repair of pectus carinatum and how to deal with complications.

While less common than pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum is also a chest wall deformity affecting males in higher proportion than women. Patient requests for a solution of this disease occur especially during the growth spurt of puberty when this malformation becomes more obvious and difficult to conceal. Those people suffering from pectus carinatum are very likely subject to behavioral changes and negative personality impacts.

Background: The existence of early factors which, acting during critical periods of intrauterine or immediate postnatal development, determine long-term health has become increasingly recognized. Both high and low birth weight have been associated with cardiovascular risk factors in adulthood. Therefore, body composition at birth rather than birth weight may be a marker to predict future diseases.

Identification of 17 novel mutations in 40 Argentinean unrelated families with mucopolysaccharidosis type II (Hunter syndrome).

Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPSII) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by deficiency of the enzyme iduronate-2-sulfatase (IDS). The human gene is located in chromosome Xq28. This is the first report of genotype and phenotype characterization of 49 Hunter patients from 40 families of Argentina.

Incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in hepatitis C cirrhotic patients with and without HIV infection: a cohort study, 1999-2011.

INTRODUCTION. High activity antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has allowed people infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to live longer. In the course of time, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) began to be found in these patients.

Redirection of anomalous venous pulmonary flow to left atrium using a vascular plug II.

An 8-year-old male patient was sent to the catheterization laboratory for assessment of a partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection found by echocardiography. During the intervention, cineangiogram revealed left pulmonary veins draining to the right atrium through left innominate and vertical veins. Despite this anatomical feature, these pulmonary veins were also connected to the left atrium.

Patent ductus arteriosus associated with aberrant right subclavian artery: two cases, one successful interventional closure of PDA.

Two children were sent to the catheterization laboratory for transcatheter closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). During the intervention, cineangiogram revealed associated aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA). Both patients had left-sided aortic arch.

Transient expiratory flow interruptions (TEFI) increase expiratory flow in acute asthma exacerbation.

We have shown that expiratory flows increase when expirations are rapidly interrupted in stable asthmatic patients. We hypothesized that a similar increase could be obtained in patients with acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma treated in the Emergency Room. A total of 30 asthmatic patients were randomly allocated into two groups, the study and the control groups.

Risk factors and characteristics of extent progression in ulcerative colitis.

Background: The main objective was to identify risk factors for extent progression in distal ulcerative colitis. The secondary objective was to determine clinical characteristics of disease at the time of progression.

Chronic pancreatitis and systemic lupus erythematosus: an uncommon association.

The association between systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and chronic pancreatitis (CP) is extremely rare. Up to now, only six cases have been reported. We report the case of a young woman who presented her first episode of abdominal pain and hyperamylasemia at the onset of SLE and developed chronic calcifying pancreatitis after a two year period.

Flexions of the popliteal artery: dynamic angiography.

Background: Stenting of popliteal artery (PA) with self-expandable stents is a therapeutic option in selected patients with arterial disease. Fractures of these stents may occur, and they are thought to be related to development of hinge points (HPs) secondary to knee flexion. However, it remains obscure how movements of the knee affect the morphology of the PA and where HPs occur.
