C-reactive protein in children with malaria in Luanda, Angola: a prospective study.

We explored the changes of the initially highly upgraded cerebrospinal fluid matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and tissue inhibitor of MMP 1 (TIMP-1) response during recovery of childhood bacterial meningitis and their association with outcome. The sizes of these changes varied substantially, but a steeper decrease in the MMP-9 and an increase of the TIMP-1 concentrations augured a better outcome.

TPI1 promoter polymorphisms occur in high prevalence in individuals from African origin. Malaria-patients from Angola and Mozambique were screened for the TPI1 gene promoter variants rs1800200A>G, (-5G>A), rs1800201G>A, (-8G>A), rs1800202T>G, (-24T>G), and for the intron 5 polymorphism rs2071069G>A, (2262G>A). -5G>A and -8G>A variants occur in 47% and 53% in Angola and Mozambique, respectively while -24T>G was monomorphic for the wild-type T allele.

Introduction And Objective: This is the first study in Angola with the aim of characterizing ventricular septal defect (VSD) among children and adolescents.

Methods: A cross-sectional study based on echocardiographic records of the largest pediatric cardiology center in Angola included all children and adolescents (0 to 18 years old) with VSD between April 2010 and March 2011. The diagnosis was made by transthoracic and Doppler echocardiography with a Medison SA 8000 system.

Background: In childhood acute bacterial meningitis, the level of consciousness, measured with the Glasgow coma scale (GCS) or the Blantyre coma scale (BCS), is the most important predictor of outcome. The Herson-Todd scale (HTS) was developed for Haemophilus influenzae meningitis. Our objective was to identify prognostic factors, to form a simple scale, and to compare the predictive accuracy of these scales.

We report a morality rate of 33% among 403 children with bacterial meningitis in Angola. A fatal outcome was associated with impaired consciousness, severe dyspnea, and seizures, and severe neurological sequelae (found in 25% of our patients) was associated with delayed presentation to the hospital, impaired consciousness, and seizures. Being underweight was of secondary importance.
