Background: Pain is a frequent symptom in cancer patients (CP), and its multidimensional assessment is essential for a comprehensive approach and to establish clinical prognoses. The Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ) is an internationally recognized tool for the multidimensional assessment of pain, both in clinical and research settings. However, no studies have been reported in Latin America that determine its psychometric properties in CP and chronic pain.

Microsatellite Instability in Urine: Breakthrough Method for Bladder Cancer Identification.

Biomedicines

November 2024

Doctorado en Genética Humana, Instituto de Genética Humana "Dr. Enrique Corona Rivera", Departamento de Biología Molecular y Genómica, Centro Universitario de Ciencias de la Salud, Universidad de Guadalajara, Guadalajara 44340, Jalisco, Mexico.

Bladder cancer (BC) is the most common neoplasm of the urinary system and ranks tenth in global cancer incidence. Due to its high recurrence rate and the need for continuous monitoring, it is the cancer with the highest cost per patient. Cystoscopy is the traditional method for its detection and surveillance; however, this is an invasive technique, while non-invasive methods, such as cytology, have a limited sensitivity.

Sphenopalatine ganglion stimulation for the treatment of cerebrovascular ischemia.

Clin Auton Res

December 2024

Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa, C. Sauces, s/n, 80019, Culiacán, SIN, Mexico.

Purpose: The parasympathetic effects of the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) on the cerebral vasculature provide a compelling rationale for its therapeutic application in cerebrovascular ischemia. In recent years, attempts have been made to stimulate the SPG to achieve beneficial effects on cerebral circulation.

Methods: This review synthesizes the available publications on SPG stimulation.

Background: Precision nutrition is based on the integration of individual's phenotypical and biological characteristics including genetic variants, epigenetic marks, gut microbiota profiles, and metabolite fingerprints as well as medical history, lifestyle practices, and environmental and cultural factors. Thus, nutriomics areas including nutrigenomics, nutrigenetics, nutriepigenetics, nutrimetabolomics, and nutrimetagenomics have emerged to comprehensively understand the complex interactions between nutrients, diet, and the human body's molecular processes through precision nutrition.

Up to one-third of patients with classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) are not responsive to first-line therapy or eventually relapse. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been successfully employed to treat relapsed/refractory cHL (r/r cHL) but place patients at risk of financial toxicity. Early-phase trials and observational data suggest that low doses of ICIs may achieve similar results to those obtained with high doses.

: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) can cause liver injury and a deterioration of hepatic function. The Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score is a good predictor for poor prognosis of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the United States, Egypt and Turkey. Nevertheless, the best cut-off value for the MELD score to predict mortality in the Mexican population has yet to be established.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the epidemiology and outcomes of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) across 16 Latin American countries from August 2020 to June 2022.
  • Out of 1239 children with MIS-C, the majority were previously healthy, with common symptoms including abdominal pain and conjunctival injection, and nearly half required intensive care.
  • The overall death rate was 4.88%, notably higher for those not initially diagnosed with MIS-C, emphasizing the need for improved awareness and early detection of the syndrome.

The gut microbiome has been studied in recent years due to its association with various pathological pathways involved in different diseases, caused by its structure, function, and diversity alteration. The knowledge of this mechanism has generated interest in the investigation of its relationship with ophthalmologic diseases. Recent studies infer the existence of a gut-eye microbiota axis, influenced by the intestinal barrier, the blood-retina barrier, and the immune privilege of the eye.

Plant-based proteins: clinical and technological importance.

Food Sci Biotechnol

August 2024

Departamento de Nutrición Animal y Bioquímica, Facultad de Medicina Veterinaria y Zootecnia (FMVZ), Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City, Mexico.

Healthy and sustainable diets have seen a surge in popularity in recent years, driven by a desire to consume foods that not only help health but also have a favorable influence on the environment, such as plant-based proteins. This has created controversy because plant-based proteins may not always contain all the amino acids required by the organism. However, protein extraction methods have been developed due to technological advancements to boost their nutritional worth.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a considerable proportion of patients developed a severe condition that included respiratory failure, shock, or multiple organ dysfunction. Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) has been recognized as a possible cause of severe COVID-19 development. Given this, this study investigates the occurrence and consequences of AKI in Mexican patients to contribute to better knowledge and management of this problem.

High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) removes cholesterol, an essential component in lipid rafts, and this cholesterol removal can regulate protein attachment to lipid rafts, modulating their functionality in the immune cell response. Although severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection can alter the lipid profile, there is little information on the role of HDL-c and other lipids in prognostic of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Mexican population. This study aims to evaluate the predictive value of HDL-c and lipid profile on severity and survival of 102 patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 first wave.

Bovine lactoferrin (bLF) is a glycosylated protein with purported beneficial properties. The aim of this work was to determine the role of bLF glycosylation in the adhesion, internalization, and growth inhibition of cancer cells. The viability of cervix (HeLa) and colon (Caco-2) cancer cells (MTT assay and epifluorescence microscopy) was inhibited by bLF, while deglycosylated bLF (bLFdeg) had no effect.

Clinical capacity for sustainability, or the clinical resources needed to sustain an evidence-based practice, represent proximal determinants that contribute to intervention sustainment. We examine the relationship between clinical capacity for sustainability and sustainment of PEWS, an evidence-based intervention to improve outcomes for pediatric oncology patients in resource-variable hospitals. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among Latin American pediatric oncology centers participating in Proyecto Escala de Valoración de Alerta Temprana (EVAT), an improvement collaborative to implement Pediatric Early Warning Systems (PEWS).
