Objectives: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex condition affecting approximately 1 in 10 women of reproductive age. However, limited data are available regarding the specific characteristics and needs of women with PCOS in Latin America. This consensus sought to evaluate the evidence-based practices for the management of PCOS for Latin American populations, consolidate regional insights, identify eventual gaps in implementation and identify key research opportunities.

Objectives: Postoperative complications after major surgery, especially in vascular procedures, are associated with a significant increase in costs and mortality. Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) have a notable impact on morbidity and mortality. The primary aim of this present study was to evaluate the effects of spinal anesthesia compared with general anesthesia on the incidence of PPCs in patients undergoing lower extremity bypass surgery.

Objectives: SARS-CoV-2 infection is a known risk factor for adverse health outcomes in pregnancy, affecting both maternal and neonatal health. Mounting evidence suggests that even a single dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine protects against severe SARS-CoV-2 infection and is safe for both pregnant persons and neonates. Southern Brazil was heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the protective effects of the vaccine on maternal and neonatal health are not well described.

Background: Shorter courses of antimicrobial therapy have been shown to be non-inferior to longer durations for the management of several infections. However, data on critically ill patients with severe infections by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (MDR-GNB) are scarce. In the duratiOn of theraPy in severe infecTIons by MultIdrug-reSistant gram-nEgative bacteria (OPTIMISE) trial, we assessed the non-inferiority of 7-day versus 14-day antimicrobial therapy for patients with intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired severe infections by MDR-GNB.

Nivolumab plus relatlimab demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in progression-free survival (PFS), along with a clinically meaningful, but not statistically significant improvement in overall survival (OS) and a numerically higher objective response rate (ORR) compared with nivolumab in the RELATIVITY-047 trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03470922). We report updated descriptive efficacy and safety results from RELATIVITY-047 with a median follow-up of 33.

Background: Twice-yearly subcutaneous lenacapavir has been shown to be efficacious for prevention of HIV infection in cisgender women. The efficacy of lenacapavir for preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in cisgender men, transgender women, transgender men, and gender-nonbinary persons is unclear.
Methods: In this phase 3, double-blind, randomized, active-controlled trial, we randomly assigned participants in a 2:1 ratio to receive subcutaneous lenacapavir every 26 weeks or daily oral emtricitabine-tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (F/TDF).

Sepsis is characterized by a dysregulated and excessive systemic inflammatory response to infection, associated with vascular and metabolic abnormalities that ultimately lead to organ dysfunction. In immune cells, both non-oxidative and oxidative metabolic rates are closely linked to inflammatory responses. Mitochondria play a central role in supporting these cellular processes by utilizing metabolic substrates and synthesizing ATP through oxygen consumption.

For a subset of PROpel patients, steady-state concentrations of olaparib, abiraterone, and Δ-abiraterone were measured in blood samples collected before and at several time points after dose administration. The pharmacokinetics (PK) for each drug and metabolite were evaluated to determine whether any clinically relevant drug-drug interactions between olaparib and abiraterone occurred.

Background: Proper analysis and interpretation of health care data can significantly improve patient outcomes by enhancing services and revealing the impacts of new technologies and treatments. Understanding the substantial impact of temporal shifts in these data is crucial. For example, COVID-19 vaccination initially lowered the mean age of at-risk patients and later changed the characteristics of those who died.

Background: COVID-19 vaccines effectively prevent infection and hospitalization. However, few population-based studies have compared the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 using advanced statistical methods. Our objective is to address this evidence gap by comparing vaccinated and unvaccinated patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Background: The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) continuum of care cascade illustrates the 90-90-90 goals defined by the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (UNAIDS). The care cascade includes the following five steps: Diagnosis, linkage to care, retention in care, adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), and viral suppression.
Aim: To elaborate the HIV cascade of patients diagnosed with HIV at the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Hospital (HNSC) and to determine possible local causes for the loss of patients between each step of the cascade.
