Assessment of mitochondrial function and its prognostic role in sepsis: a literature review.

Intensive Care Med Exp

Laboratory of Neurotrauma and Biomarkers, Departamento de Bioquímica, Instituto de Ciências Básicas da Saúde, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Sepsis is characterized by a dysregulated and excessive systemic inflammatory response to infection, associated with vascular and metabolic abnormalities that ultimately lead to organ dysfunction. In immune cells, both non-oxidative and oxidative metabolic rates are closely linked to inflammatory responses. Mitochondria play a central role in supporting these cellular processes by utilizing metabolic substrates and synthesizing ATP through oxygen consumption.

Background: COVID-19 vaccines effectively prevent infection and hospitalization. However, few population-based studies have compared the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 using advanced statistical methods. Our objective is to address this evidence gap by comparing vaccinated and unvaccinated patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Context: COVID-19 induces complex distress across physical, psychological, and social realms and palliative care (PC) has the potential to mitigate this suffering significantly.

Objectives: To describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients with an indication of PC, compared to patients who had no indication, in different pandemic waves.

Methods: This retrospective multicenter observational cohort included patients from 40 hospitals, admitted from March 2020 to August 2022.

IATS - Instituto de Avaliação de Tecnologias em Saúde(CNPq), Rua Ramiro Barcelos, 2350, 90035-003 Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil.

Although control of Covid-19 has improved, the virus continues to cause infections, such as tuberculosis, that is still endemic in many countries, representing a scenario of coinfection. To compare Covid-19 clinical manifestations and outcomes between patients with active tuberculosis infection and matched controls. This is a matched case-control study based on data from the Brazilian Covid-19 Registry, in hospitalized patients aged 18 or over with laboratory confirmed Covid-19 from March 1, 2020, to March 31, 2022.

Background: Although dementia has emerged as an important risk factor for severe SARS-CoV-2 infection, results on COVID-19-related complications and mortality are not consistent. We examined the clinical presentations and outcomes of COVID-19 in a multicentre cohort of in-hospital patients, comparing those with and without dementia.

Methods: This retrospective observational study comprises COVID-19 laboratory-confirmed patients aged ≥ 60 years admitted to 38 hospitals from 19 cities in Brazil.

Background: Acute kidney injury has been described as a common complication in patients hospitalized with COVID-19, which may lead to the need for kidney replacement therapy (KRT) in its most severe forms. Our group developed and validated the MMCD score in Brazilian COVID-19 patients to predict KRT, which showed excellent performance using data from 2020. This study aimed to validate the MMCD score in a large cohort of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in a different pandemic phase and assess its performance to predict in-hospital mortality.

The majority of early prediction scores and methods to predict COVID-19 mortality are bound by methodological flaws and technological limitations (e.g., the use of a single prediction model).

Background: The assessment of clinical prognosis of pregnant COVID-19 patients at hospital presentation is challenging, due to physiological adaptations during pregnancy. Our aim was to assess the performance of the ABC-SPH score to predict in-hospital mortality and mechanical ventilation support in pregnant patients with COVID-19, to assess the frequency of adverse pregnancy outcomes, and characteristics of pregnant women who died.

Methods: This multicenter cohort included consecutive pregnant patients with COVID-19 admitted to the participating hospitals, from April/2020 to March/2022.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated acute kidney injury (AKI) in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, focusing on predicting the need for kidney replacement therapy (KRT) as a measure of disease severity.
  • - Researchers used a large cohort of 5212 adult patients, employing statistical methods like generalized additive models and LASSO regression to develop a prognostic score named MMCD, identifying four key predictors for KRT.
  • - The MMCD score demonstrated high accuracy in predicting KRT requirements across various cohorts and is accessible via an online risk calculator, potentially aiding healthcare professionals in managing COVID-19 patients.

Previous studies that assessed risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in COVID-19 patients have shown inconsistent results. Our aim was to investigate VTE predictors by both logistic regression (LR) and machine learning (ML) approaches, due to their potential complementarity. This cohort study of a large Brazilian COVID-19 Registry included 4120 COVID-19 adult patients from 16 hospitals.

We present a 57-year-old woman with ovarian cancer that presented to the Emergency Room with a proximal small bowel obstruction. Exploratory laparotomy evidenced a thickened 10 cm extension of the proximal jejunum without bowel peristalsis, with stenotic enteric lumen, with a lesion apparently originating from its submucosal and muscular layers. The patient underwent an exploratory laparotomy with total hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, omentectomy, small bowel resection and peritoneal biopsies.

August 2019

Graduation Program on Evaluation and Production of Technologies for the Brazilian National Health System, Hospital Nossa Senhora da Conceição, Av. Francisco Trein, 596 - Cristo Redentor, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, 91350-200, Brazil.

Review effectiveness of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in the curative treatment of oral mucositis (OM) in patients receiving cancer therapy. A systematic review with meta-analysis was performed using Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases according to PRISMA guidelines, to identify randomized controlled trials (RCT) on OM in patients during and/or after cancer therapy and in which the therapeutic approach was LLLT, with wavelengths between 632 and 970 nm. We considered grade of OM as a dichotomous variable (such as an improvement or not in severe OM on the seventh day of therapy), with the analysis of subgroups of adult patients or children and adolescents and as a continuous variable with determination of the time for the complete resolution and the subgroup analysis occurred with the strata of the samples by treatment only with chemotherapy or chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

This article aims to propose an adaptation of the methodology used by Starfield and Shy (2002) to assess the quality of health care in the municipalities which joined the Mais Médicos (More Doctors) Program. The indicators were adapted for each one of the nine criteria proposed in the methodology and were applied to medium and large municipalities in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre before and after they were integrated in the Mais Médicos Program. In 2014, the municipalities were grouped into three groups according to their scores.

Objectives: Previous studies measuring serum levels of biomarkers of inflammation/oxidative stress and neurotrophins levels in fibromyalgia (FM) have rendered inconsistent results. In the present study, our aim was to explore the levels of interleukins, oxidative stress markers and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in patients with FM in relation to depression and severity of disease.

Methods: In a prospective controlled cross-sectional study, serum concentrations of IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), protein carbonyl and BDNF were measured in 69 FM patients and 61 healthy controls (all women).
