Severity of GNAO1-Related Disorder Correlates with Changes in G-Protein Function.

Objective: GNAO1-related disorders (OMIM #615473 and #617493), caused by variants in the GNAO1 gene, are characterized by developmental delay or intellectual disability, hypotonia, movement disorders, and epilepsy. Neither a genotype-phenotype correlation nor a clear severity score have been established for this disorder. The objective of this prospective and retrospective observational study was to develop a severity score for GNAO1-related disorders, and to delineate the correlation between the underlying molecular mechanisms and clinical severity.

The global prevalence of human fascioliasis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Fascioliasis is a parasitic zoonosis that can infect humans and be a source of significant morbidity. The World Health Organization lists human fascioliasis as a neglected tropical disease, but the worldwide prevalence of fascioliasis data is unknown.

Objective: We aimed to estimate the global prevalence of human fascioliasis.

[Takotsubo Syndrome: cardiovascular complication of stroke].

: Undernutrition is projected to be a major consequence of climate change. Biodiversity could enhance climate change resilience by improving nutritional outcomes and providing healthy food resources during and/or after climate-related events. For Indigenous populations who currently base their diet on local biodiversity, rapid climate changes may affect their ability to produce, access or gather food and consequently impact their nutritional status.

Home-Based Respiratory Physiotherapy and Telephone-Based Psychological Support for COVID-19 Survivors in Peru: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Both pulmonary and mental health are affected following hospitalization for COVID-19 pneumonia. Pulmonary rehabilitation therapy has demonstrated benefits in improving mental health, but no validated combined programs that include mental health have been proposed.

Objective: This article presents the design of a trial that aimed to assess whether the participation in a combined rehabilitation program that includes home-based respiratory physiotherapy and telephone-based psychological support is associated with a greater improvement of pulmonary and mental health outcomes 7-12 weeks after COVID-19 hospitalization discharge compared with posthospital usual care provided by a public Peruvian hospital.

[Clinicopathological profile of patients with hepatobiliary cancers at two main referral hospitals in Lima, Peru].

Objective: The aim of the study was to describe the clinicopathological profile of patients diagnosed with liver, bile ducts or gallbladder cancer.

Materials And Methods: Between 2006 and 2017, 89 patients (57% female; mean age: 62 years-old) with these cancers were diagnosed at two national hospitals in Lima, Peru.

Results: Most patients (64%) had advanced stages of disease.

Epidemiological data on human rhinovirus (RV) in Peru is still scarce, as well as its role in respiratory infections in children. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of rhinovirus and to identify the circulating species in nasopharyngeal swabs from children with acute respiratory infections.

Increase of Macrolide-Resistance in Strains After the Introduction of the 13-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine in Lima, Peru.

upper respiratory infections and pneumonia are often treated with macrolides, but recently macrolide resistance is becoming an increasingly important problem. The 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) was introduced in the National Immunization Program of Peru in 2015. This study aimed to evaluate the temporal evolution of macrolide resistance in isolates collected in five cross-sectional studies conducted before and after this vaccine introduction, from 2006 to 2019 in Lima, Peru.

American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (ATL) is an endemic and neglected disease of South America. Here, mucosal leishmaniasis (ML) disproportionately affects up to 20% of subjects with current or previous localised cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL). Preclinical and clinical reports have implicated the Leishmania RNA virus-1 (LRV1) as a possible determinant of progression to ML and other severe manifestations such as extensive cutaneous and mucosal disease and treatment failure and relapse.

Cutaneous balamuthiasis: A clinicopathological study.

Introduction: Balamuthia mandrillaris, a free-living amoeba, causes an uncommon infection that is characterized by cutaneous and neurological involvement, which carries a poor prognosis.

Methods: This is a retrospective observational study including patients with clinical suspicion of cutaneous balamuthiasis, their skin biopsies, and/or a positive direct immunofluorescence test. The data were collected from the Dermatology and Pathology service of the Hospital Cayetano Heredia and the Instituto Tropical Alexander von Humboldt, Lima, Peru, from January 1985 to June 2007.

Endoscopic removal of a toothbrush in a young adult with psychiatricdisorder.

Ingestion of foreign bodies is a relative common situation in the emergency department; however, ingestion of toothbrush is rarely reported in the literature. We present the case of a 27-year-old man with a previous diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder, who presented to the emergency department 17 hours after an ingestion of a toothbrush. We performed an endoscopic removal using a polypectomy snare in the Gastroenterology Department under moderate sedation.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus in Peru: A literature review including studies at high-altitude settings.

We performed a comprehensive review of recent publications about type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Peru, including studies among people living at high altitude above the sea level. An increase in the prevalence of T2DM in Peru has been reported, the reasons are multifactorial and coinciding with the strong economic growth that our country has experienced over the last 20 years along with migration from the Andean regions to the coast and the adoption of a lifestyle that is a known to be a risk factor for obesity and insulin resistance. Scarce information is available in Peru about the prevalence of chronic complications of T2DM such as retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy.

Influenza vaccine effectiveness within prospective cohorts of healthcare personnel in Israel and Peru 2016-2019.

Background: There are limited data on influenza vaccine effectiveness (IVE) in preventing laboratory-confirmed influenza illness among healthcare personnel (HCP).

Methods: HCP with direct patient contact working full-time in hospitals were followed during three influenza seasons in Israel (2016-2017 to 2018-2019) and Peru (2016 to 2018). Trivalent influenza vaccines were available at all sites, except during 2018-2019 when Israel used quadrivalent vaccines; vaccination was documented by electronic medical records, vaccine registries, and/or self-report (for vaccinations outside the hospital).
