Objective: GNAO1-related disorders (OMIM #615473 and #617493), caused by variants in the GNAO1 gene, are characterized by developmental delay or intellectual disability, hypotonia, movement disorders, and epilepsy. Neither a genotype-phenotype correlation nor a clear severity score have been established for this disorder. The objective of this prospective and retrospective observational study was to develop a severity score for GNAO1-related disorders, and to delineate the correlation between the underlying molecular mechanisms and clinical severity.

Aims: Establishing whether fasting plasma glucose (FPG), postprandial glucose (PPG), and HbA1c have the same diagnostic accuracy in NAFLD versus otherwise healthy people could inform T2DM screening recommendations for those with NAFLD.
Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) 1989-1994. T2DM was defined as PPG ≥ 200 mg/dL, FPG ≥ 126 mg/dL, or HbA1c ≥ 6.

An 82-year-old woman, Katz A, with a history of type 2 diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure, was admitted for ischemic stroke complicated by Takotsubo´s syndrome with subsequent readmission for atrial fibrillation after discharge. These three clinical events have criteria to be integrated as a Brain Heart Syndrome, which is a high-risk condition for mortality.

Objective: To determinate the frequency of Streptococcus pneumoniae nasopharyngeal carriers, serotypes and antimicrobial resistance in healthy children in Lima, Peru, post-PCV13 introduction and to compare the results with a similar study conducted between 2006 and 2008 before PCV7 introduction (pre-PCV7).
Methods: A cross-sectional multicenter study was conducted between January 2018 and August 2019 in 1000 healthy children under two years of age. We use standard microbiological methods to determinate S.

Manual Thrombus Aspiration (MTA) reduces thrombus burden and improves myocardial reperfusion markers in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), however its clinical benefit is controversial due to conflicting results from randomized clinical trials, which is why the benefit of its application during primary angioplasty (PA) remains uncertain. Reports such as that of Doo Sun Sim, et al. suggest that the impact of MTA may become clinically relevant in patients with a longer total ischemia time.

Introduction: Different studies describe the clinical profile and factors that could explain the evolution and outcome of patients with chronic kidney disease and COVID-19. This study aims to evaluate the factors related to the mortality of patients with stage-5 chronic kidney disease on chronic dialysis hospitalized for COVID-19 at the Hospital Nacional Arzobispo Loayza from April to December 2020.
Methods: Retrospective case series and exploratory analysis were performed.

Objectives: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a non-communicable disease with a rising prevalence worldwide and with large burden for patients and health systems. To date, the presence of unique phenotypes in patients with NAFLD has not been studied, and their identification could inform precision medicine and public health with pragmatic implications in personalised management and care for patients with NAFLD.
Design: Cross-sectional and prospective (up to 31 December 2019) analysis of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III (1988-1994).

: Undernutrition is projected to be a major consequence of climate change. Biodiversity could enhance climate change resilience by improving nutritional outcomes and providing healthy food resources during and/or after climate-related events. For Indigenous populations who currently base their diet on local biodiversity, rapid climate changes may affect their ability to produce, access or gather food and consequently impact their nutritional status.

Background: Both pulmonary and mental health are affected following hospitalization for COVID-19 pneumonia. Pulmonary rehabilitation therapy has demonstrated benefits in improving mental health, but no validated combined programs that include mental health have been proposed.
Objective: This article presents the design of a trial that aimed to assess whether the participation in a combined rehabilitation program that includes home-based respiratory physiotherapy and telephone-based psychological support is associated with a greater improvement of pulmonary and mental health outcomes 7-12 weeks after COVID-19 hospitalization discharge compared with posthospital usual care provided by a public Peruvian hospital.

Background: Coronavirus-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (CARDS) has limited effective therapy to date. NLRP3 inflammasome activation induced by SARS-CoV-2 in COVID-19 contributes to cytokine storm.
Methods: This randomised, multinational study enrolled hospitalised patients (18-80 years) with COVID-19-associated pneumonia and impaired respiratory function.

Introduction: Human rhinovirus is a major cause of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) worldwide. Epidemiological data on human rhinovirus (RV) in Peru is still scarce, as well as its role in respiratory infections in children. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of rhinovirus and to identify the circulating species in nasopharyngeal swabs from children with acute respiratory infections.

upper respiratory infections and pneumonia are often treated with macrolides, but recently macrolide resistance is becoming an increasingly important problem. The 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) was introduced in the National Immunization Program of Peru in 2015. This study aimed to evaluate the temporal evolution of macrolide resistance in isolates collected in five cross-sectional studies conducted before and after this vaccine introduction, from 2006 to 2019 in Lima, Peru.

American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (ATL) is an endemic and neglected disease of South America. Here, mucosal leishmaniasis (ML) disproportionately affects up to 20% of subjects with current or previous localised cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL). Preclinical and clinical reports have implicated the Leishmania RNA virus-1 (LRV1) as a possible determinant of progression to ML and other severe manifestations such as extensive cutaneous and mucosal disease and treatment failure and relapse.

Introduction: Balamuthia mandrillaris, a free-living amoeba, causes an uncommon infection that is characterized by cutaneous and neurological involvement, which carries a poor prognosis.
Methods: This is a retrospective observational study including patients with clinical suspicion of cutaneous balamuthiasis, their skin biopsies, and/or a positive direct immunofluorescence test. The data were collected from the Dermatology and Pathology service of the Hospital Cayetano Heredia and the Instituto Tropical Alexander von Humboldt, Lima, Peru, from January 1985 to June 2007.

Ingestion of foreign bodies is a relative common situation in the emergency department; however, ingestion of toothbrush is rarely reported in the literature. We present the case of a 27-year-old man with a previous diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder, who presented to the emergency department 17 hours after an ingestion of a toothbrush. We performed an endoscopic removal using a polypectomy snare in the Gastroenterology Department under moderate sedation.

We performed a comprehensive review of recent publications about type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Peru, including studies among people living at high altitude above the sea level. An increase in the prevalence of T2DM in Peru has been reported, the reasons are multifactorial and coinciding with the strong economic growth that our country has experienced over the last 20 years along with migration from the Andean regions to the coast and the adoption of a lifestyle that is a known to be a risk factor for obesity and insulin resistance. Scarce information is available in Peru about the prevalence of chronic complications of T2DM such as retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy.

Methods: HCP with direct patient contact working full-time in hospitals were followed during three influenza seasons in Israel (2016-2017 to 2018-2019) and Peru (2016 to 2018). Trivalent influenza vaccines were available at all sites, except during 2018-2019 when Israel used quadrivalent vaccines; vaccination was documented by electronic medical records, vaccine registries, and/or self-report (for vaccinations outside the hospital).
