The corpus callosum can reveal a "butterfly" pattern on imaging in various conditions, including glioblastoma, primary central nervous system lymphoma, tumefactive multiple sclerosis, and toxoplasmosis. Early differentiation among these conditions is crucial to avoid aggressive treatments. In one case, a 70-year-old woman with a history of multiple sclerosis experienced a neurological decline.

Chordoid meningioma, a rare WHO grade II tumor, is known for its aggressive behavior and high recurrence rate. We report a case of a 44-year-old woman with progressive left-sided weakness, where imaging revealed a 3.0 cm lesion in the right sphenoidal wing with significant midline shift and edema.

Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that infects approximately half of the world's population, being more prevalent in low- and middle-income countries. H. pylori can cause gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, and gastric cancer, which is among the five most frequent cancers worldwide.

Background: We examined the added value of serologic testing for estimating influenza virus infection incidence based on illness surveillance with molecular testing versus periodic serologic testing.
Methods: Pregnant persons unvaccinated against influenza at <28 weeks gestation were enrolled before the 2017 and 2018 influenza seasons in Peru and Thailand. Blood specimens were collected at enrollment and ≤14 days postpartum for testing by hemagglutination inhibition assay for antibodies against influenza reference viruses.

Pre-existing (chronic) atrial fibrillation (AF) has been identified as a risk factor for cardiovascular complications and mortality in patients with COVID-19; however, evidence in Latin America (LATAM) is scarce. This prospective and multicenter study from the CARDIO COVID 19-20 database includes hospitalized adults with COVID-19 from 14 countries in LATAM. A parsimonious logistic regression model was used to identify the main factors associated with mortality in a simulated case-control setting comparing patients with a history of AF to those without.

Objectives: Biliary access refractory to conventional cannulation techniques is a challenging clinical scenario for most endoscopists. The endoscopic-percutaneous rendezvous technique is an optimal alternative with high success rates and low complication rates in expert hands, however its routine use in the West, mainly in Latin America, is still limited. The aim of our study was to evaluate the feasibility, efficacy and safety of endoscopic-percutaneous rendezvous in the management of difficult biliary tract in an endoscopic center in Peru.

Background: Sarcomas are the most common type of cardiac malignancy, but they are extremely rare. Within this group, angiosarcomas have the highest frequency, followed by undifferentiated sarcomas. This type of tumor has a poor prognosis and a high recurrence rate.

Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) are a growing threat to global health and the economy. Understanding the interactions between resistance and virulence mechanisms of CPE is crucial for managing difficult-to-treat infections and informing outbreak prevention and control programs. Here, we report the characterization of 21 consecutive, unique clinical isolates of CPE collected in 2018 at a tertiary hospital in Lima, Peru.

Introduction Mucormycosis is an invasive fungal infection caused by Mucorales that has been increasingly recognized over the years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, in Peru, there has been limited research on this disease. This study seeks to provide insights into the demographics, clinical presentations, treatment, and outcomes of patients with mucormycosis, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Uncertainty about risk of illness and the value of influenza vaccines negatively affects vaccine uptake among persons targeted for influenza vaccination.
Methods: During 2016-2019, we followed a cohort of healthcare personnel (HCP) targeted for free-of-charge influenza vaccination in five Lima hospitals to quantify risk of influenza, workplace presenteeism (coming to work despite illness), and absenteeism (taking time off from work because of illness). The HCP who developed acute respiratory illnesses (ARI) (≥1 of acute cough, runny nose, body aches, or feverishness) were tested for influenza using reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR).

Prognostic and predictive factors for early and late distant distance recurrence risk in estrogen-receptor positive and HER2-receptor negative early breast cancer are well known, but not all these variables work equally for the prediction. The following are the most widely accepted variables for categorizing risk levels: clinic-pathologic features (tumor size, lymph node involvement, histological grade, age, menopausal status, Ki-67 expression, estrogen, and progesterone expression), primary systemic treatment response (pathologic response and/or Ki-67 downstaging), and gene expression signatures stratification. Treatment guidelines from cancer societies and collaborative groups, online predict-tools, real-world data and experts' opinion recommends different adjuvant strategies (chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, ovarian suppression, olaparib, or abemaciclib) depending on the low (< 10%), intermediate (10%-20%) or high-risk of distance recurrence at least in the first 5 years.

Management of chronic conditions and optimization of overall health has become a primary global health concern in the care of people living with HIV in the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy (ART), particularly in lower-and-middle income countries where infrastructure for chronic disease management may be fragmented. Alterations in body composition can reflect important changes in musculoskeletal health, particularly among populations at risk for developing fat and muscle redistribution syndromes, such as women with HIV on ART. Given the lack of data on this topic in Latin America and the Caribbean, we designed an exploratory study to measure these outcomes in a population of women aging with HIV in Peru.

We present the first two cases reported in Peru of the use of adjuvant hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in patients with COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM). The first case is a 41-year-old woman, with pain in the left side of the face and palatine region with purulent rhinorrhea for a month. Only an oroantral fistula was found during physical examination.

Background & Aims: Genetic ancestry or racial differences in health outcomes exist in diseases associated with systemic inflammation (eg, COVID-19). This study aimed to investigate the association of genetic ancestry and race with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), which is characterized by acute systemic inflammation, multi-organ failure, and high risk of short-term death.
Methods: This prospective cohort study analyzed a comprehensive set of data, including genetic ancestry and race among several others, in 1274 patients with acutely decompensated cirrhosis who were nonelectively admitted to 44 hospitals from 7 Latin American countries.

Introduction: Despite a government-subsidized vaccination program, healthcare personnel (HCP) influenza vaccination uptake remains low in Peru. Using three years of cross-sectional surveys and an additional five years of prior vaccination history of HCP in Peru, we explored HCP knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of influenza illness and its impact on vaccination frequency.
Methods: In 2016, the Estudio Vacuna de Influenza Peru (VIP) cohort was initiated in Lima, Peru, which collected information about HCP KAP and influenza vaccination history from 2011─2018.

The evolution of palliative care in Latin America has been slow compared with other parts of the world, especially developed countries. Current data show inequality in the development of palliative care in the region and those differences are also evident within countries between urban and rural populations. Peru is situated in the low-ranking group in terms of palliative care services in Latin America.
