Status epilepticus (SE) and acute repetitive seizures (ARSs) frequently result in emergency visits. Wide variations in response are seen with standard antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Oral and intravenous (IV) formulations of lacosamide are approved as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial-onset seizures in adults and adolescents.

Artiflex toric phakic intraocular lens implantation in congenital nystagmus.

Case Rep Ophthalmol

May 2011

Refractive Surgery Department, Centro Oftalmológico Marqués de Sotelo and Hospital NISA Valencia al Mar, University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain.

Case: A 44-year-old woman with congenital nystagmus and myopic astigmatism in both eyes who was submitted to phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation.

Methods: Full ophthalmologic examination including refractive status, corrected (CDVA) and uncorrected (UCVA) monocular and binocular visual acuities, ocular motility, slit-lamp evaluation, tonometry and fundoscopy before and after implantation of toric pIOLs (Artiflex; Ophtec BV, The Netherlands) in both eyes.

Results: Preoperative logMAR CDVA were 0.

Purpose: This study evaluated visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and wavefront aberrations after refractive multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.

Methods: A prospective study comprising 174 eyes of 87 patients who had bilateral implantation of a multifocal IOL was carried out. A control group of 100 eyes of 50 age-matched patients with a monofocal IOL was used for comparison.

Objective: Clinical validation of the Spanish version of the Mississippi Aphasia Screening Test (MASTsp) as a screening test for language disorders in patients who have suffered a stroke.

Material And Methods: A total of 29 patients who had suffered a stroke and had aphasia after a left hemispheric lesion were evaluated with the MASTsp, the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination and the Token Test at baseline and after six months of rehabilitation. Two expert speech-therapists evaluated twelve aphasic patients to determine the inter-observer reliability.

Purpose: Three cases of patients who developed a similar hyperopic defect in refraction following laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) after multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation are described.

Methods: Ophthalmologic evaluation including refractive status, corrected and uncorrected visual acuity (both at far and near), and corneal topography in patients presenting similar hyperopic refractive surprise in one eye as a result of LASIK refinement of residual ametropia after refractive multifocal IOL implantation.

Results: Laser in situ keratomileusis enhancement for residual ametropia of -1.

Purpose: To determine whether implantation of acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) with aspheric design (Tecnis Z9003, AMO) results in improved visual acuity or contrast sensitivity compared with conventional spherical acrylic IOL (AR40e, AMO).

Methods: In an intraindividual randomized prospective study of 60 patients with bilateral cataract, the Tecnis Z9003 IOL was compared with the AR40e IOL. Ocular aberrations for a 4.

Anoxic encephalopathy is the consequence of acute cerebral oxygen deprivation usually generated by cardiac arrest and/or respiratory failure. Recently an interesting case of one patient with cerebral anoxia after ultraviolet radiation session has been published. This paper shows the clinical evolution of this patient after inclusion in a multidisciplinary rehabilitation program, which included treatment of the psychopathological, neuropsychological and functional impairments that this pathology often generates.

Purpose: To evaluate potential changes in contrast sensitivity and color discrimination in diabetic patients who had cataract surgery and implantation of the blue-light filtering AcrySof Natural (SN60AT) intraocular lens (IOL) compared with an ultraviolet-only filtering (AcrySof SA60AT) IOL.

Setting: Refractive Surgery Unit, Hospital NISA Valencia al Mar, Valencia, Spain.

Methods: Forty-four eyes of 22 diabetic patients were enrolled in a blue-light filtering fellow-eye control study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare contrast sensitivity and color vision in patients using blue-light filtering intraocular lenses (IOLs) versus non-yellow-tinted IOLs after cataract surgery.
  • Conducted at a hospital in Spain, the research involved 20 patients who had one eye implanted with a yellow-tinted IOL and the other with a non-yellow-tinted IOL, assessing visual functions three months post-surgery.
  • Results showed no significant differences in contrast sensitivity or color discrimination between the two IOL types, suggesting that blue-light filtering IOLs are beneficial for protecting the retina without impairing visual function.

Objective: To evaluate the utility of the Wechsler adult intelligence scale III (WAIS-III) as a measure of intelligence after severe brain injury, and to elucidate prognostic factors associated with intelligence coefficients (IQs).

Methods: Forty-six patients (age: 27.4 +/- 12.

Objectives: To describe the clinical profile (neuropsychological, psychopathological, functional and neuroimaging), as well as the evolution of patients with anoxic encephalopathy.

Patients And Methods: Nine patients with anoxic encephalopathy attending our Service were included in the study. All patients were assessed with a broad range of neuropsychological tests, checklists of psychopathological symptoms, and several functional scales.

Objectives: To validate the test of memory malingering (TOMM), and to study the influence of intelligence and memory on its performance in brain injury patients.

Patients And Methods: A total of 30 patients with traumatic head injury were included in the study. All patients were assessed with the Complutense verbal learning test, the Visual Reproduction subtest of the Wechsler memory scale-revised, the Boston naming test, two fluency tests (FAS, and animals), the Wechsler adult intelligence test-III, and with the TOMM.

Introduction: We present a comparative study (sensitivity and convergent validity) between a new verbal memory test Complutense Verbal Learning Test (TAVEC) and the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMSr) in a sample of patients with acquired brain injury.

Patients And Methods: Twenty-eight patients with acquired brain injury were included in this study. Twelve patients were reevaluated six months after their inclusion in a cognitive multidisciplinary rehabilitation program.
