Sex-specific associations of basal steroid hormones and neuropeptides with Conduct Disorder and neuroendocrine mediation of environmental risk.

Eur Neuropsychopharmacol

August 2021

Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy, University Hospital Frankfurt am Main, Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

Conduct Disorder (CD) is characterized by severe aggressive and antisocial behavior. The stress hormone system has frequently been investigated as a neurobiological correlate of CD, while other interacting neuroendocrine biomarkers of sex hormone or neuropeptide systems have rarely been studied, especially in females. We examined multiple basal neuroendocrine biomarkers in female and male adolescents with CD compared to healthy controls (HCs), and explored whether they mediate effects of environmental risk factors on CD.

Neuropsychological Subgroups of Emotion Processing in Youths With Conduct Disorder.

Front Psychiatry

December 2020

Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy, Child Neuropsychology Section, University Hospital RWTH Aachen, Aachen, Germany.

At the group level, youths with conduct disorder (CD) show deficient emotion processing across various tasks compared to typically developing controls (TDC). But little is known about neuropsychological subgroups within the CD population, the clinical correlates of emotion processing deficits [for instance, with regard to the presence or absence of the DSM-5 Limited Prosocial Emotions (LPE) specifier], and associated risk factors. 542 children and adolescents with CD (317 girls) and 710 TDCs (479 girls), aged 9-18 years, were included from the FemNAT-CD multisite study.

Current trends in access to treatment for hepatitis B in immigrants vs non-immigrants.

Gastroenterol Rep (Oxf)

October 2020

Liver Unit, Gastroenterology Department, Parc Taulí University Hospital, Institut d'Investigacio i Innovació Parc Taulí I3PT, Autonomous University of Barcelona, Sabadell, Spain.

Background: Universal vaccination for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and migratory movements have changed the demographic characteristics of this disease in Spain and in Europe. Therefore, we evaluated the characteristics of the disease and the possible differences according to origin (immigrants vs non-immigrants) and access to treatment.

Methods: This is a multicenter cross-sectional study (June 2014 to May 2015) in which outpatients with a positive HBsAg were seen and followed in four Hepatology units.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease with an often complex component identifiable by genome-wide association studies. The most recent large-scale PD genome-wide association studies have identified more than 90 independent risk variants for PD risk and progression across more than 80 genomic regions. One major challenge in current genomics is the identification of the causal gene(s) and variant(s) at each genome-wide association study locus.

Less is known about the relationship between conduct disorder (CD), callous-unemotional (CU) traits, and positive and negative parenting in youth compared to early childhood. We combined traditional univariate analyses with a novel machine learning classifier (Angle-based Generalized Matrix Learning Vector Quantization) to classify youth (N = 756; 9-18 years) into typically developing (TD) or CD groups with or without elevated CU traits (CD/HCU, CD/LCU, respectively) using youth- and parent-reports of parenting behavior. At the group level, both CD/HCU and CD/LCU were associated with high negative and low positive parenting relative to TD.

Prevalence of office and ambulatory hypotension in treated hypertensive patients with coronary disease.

Hypertens Res

July 2020

Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, IdiPAZ and CIBERESP, Madrid, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) treated for hypertension can suffer from hypotension due to antihypertensive medications, making its identification crucial.
  • A study involving 2,892 CHD-treated hypertensive patients found that a significant portion experienced various forms of hypotension, with low diastolic blood pressure being a common cause.
  • Many cases of hypotension detected through ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) were missed when only relying on office blood pressure readings, highlighting the need for routine ABPM in these patients.
