Purpose: Although several techniques have been described for bent intramedullary nail removal, there is no universally accepted strategy. We hypothesized that a device based on the action principle of a three-point bend fixture could facilitate extraction of bent intramedullary nails; this paper describes its design and experimental testing.
Methods: Five large synthetic left femurs and five steel intramedullary nails were used.

As rates of obesity rise worldwide, incidence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly referred to as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, is increasing, worsening the burden of healthcare systems. The council of the Federation of International Societies for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (FISPGHAN) identified the topic of MASLD epidemiology, treatment, and prevention as a global priority issue to be addressed by an expert team, with the goal to describe feasible and evidence-based actions that may contribute to reducing MASLD risk. The FISPGHAN member societies nominated experts in the field.

This study evaluated lumbar spine radiographs using the Choi and Patgaonkar classifications to verify parameters potentially influencing the L5-S1 transforaminal approach. We studied 167 lumbosacral spine radiographs from patients over 18 years old with no history of surgeries, tumors, fractures, or scoliosis to measure the iliac crest height and rim angle. We categorized the cases per pelvic morphology, mega-apophysis presence, and Choi and Patgaonkar classifications.

Background: Shorter courses of antimicrobial therapy have been shown to be non-inferior to longer durations for the management of several infections. However, data on critically ill patients with severe infections by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (MDR-GNB) are scarce. In the duratiOn of theraPy in severe infecTIons by MultIdrug-reSistant gram-nEgative bacteria (OPTIMISE) trial, we assessed the non-inferiority of 7-day versus 14-day antimicrobial therapy for patients with intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired severe infections by MDR-GNB.

Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasite that has the ability to reproduce within humans, which explains its persistence for many years. It lives in the duodenum and ileum, between the enterocytes, and opens up to the intestinal lumen. Historically it is associated with tropical and subtropical rural areas, but its development has been seen in microclimates that favour the biological cycle.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthroscopy is a well-established technique for managing internal derangement of the joint, providing comprehensive intra-articular treatment. While upper compartment interventions generally yield positive outcomes, challenges remain in accessing and treating the lower compartment due to its limited volume and the size of available instruments. This technical note introduces a novel method for simultaneous arthroscopy of both TMJ compartments using an ultrafine optic (0.

When using the reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) technique for quantitative assessment of microRNA (miRNA) expression, normalizing data using a stable endogenous gene is essential; however, no universally adequate reference gene exists. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to determine, via the RNA-Seq technique, the most adequate endogenous normalizer for the expression assessment of plasma miRNAs in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Two massive sequencing procedures were performed (a) to identify differentially expressed miRNAs between patients with COVID-19 and healthy volunteers (n = 12), and (b) to identify differentially expressed miRNAs between patients with severe COVID-19 and those with mild COVID-19 (n = 8).

Fracture related infection (FRI) remains one of the most challenging complications of orthopaedic trauma surgery. Several factors contribute to FRI development but, among those, particularly interesting from the orthopaedic surgeon's perspective is the contribution of mechanical stability and timing of fracture fixation. These are indeed crucial factors both in prevention and treatment of FRI and are directly influenced by the surgeon's work.
