The genetics of human congenital coronary vascular anomalies (hCCVA) remains largely underresearched. This is surprising, because although coronary vascular defects represent a relatively small proportion of human congenital heart disease (CHD), hCCVAs are clinically significant conditions. Indeed, hCCVA frequently associate to other congenital cardiac structural defects and may even result in sudden cardiac death in the adult.

Article Synopsis
  • Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies (DMD and BMD) are genetic disorders affecting muscle strength due to a lack of dystrophin, also linked to higher rates of epilepsy and central nervous system issues.
  • A review of 416 individuals with dystrophinopathies found a lifetime epilepsy prevalence of 1.4%, lower than previous studies, with no significant differences between DMD and BMD or their genotypes, and cognitive impairment was not linked to higher epilepsy rates.
  • The research suggests that the actual prevalence of epilepsy in these conditions may be significantly lower than previously thought, which may have important implications for the medical care of affected individuals, especially those with concurrent epilepsy.

Volga German surnames and Alzheimer's disease in Argentina: an epidemiological perspective.

J Biosoc Sci

July 2024

Instituto Patagónico de Ciencias Sociales y Humanas (IPCSH), Centro Nacional Patagónico, Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas, Puerto Madryn, Argentina.

The N141I variant (PSEN1 gene) is associated with familial forms of early-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) in descendants of Volga Germans, whose migration to Argentina is well documented. As a proxy for geographic origin, surnames can be a valuable tool in population studies. The 2015 Argentine Electoral Registry provided geographic data for 30,530,194 individuals, including 326,922 with Volga German surnames.

Introduction: The course in Primary Care in Pediatric Trauma (ATIP in Spanish) has been taught in Spain since 1997, and there are currently 9 accredited training centers. Care of polytraumatized pediatric patients often takes place in an environment conducive to errors resulting from forgetfulness, which is why checklists - mnemonic tools widely used in industry and medicine - are particularly useful to avoid such errors. Although several checklists exist for pediatric trauma care, none have been developed within the setting of our course.

There is very limited evidence regarding the use of prone position as part of the treatment of severe ARDS in pregnant patients. Currently, recommendations for invasive ventilatory management in this population are very scarce and are based on the extrapolation of conclusions obtained in studies of non-pregnant patients. The available literature asserts that the anatomy and physiology of the pregnant woman undergoes complex adaptive changes that must be considered during invasive ventilatory support and prone position.

Prevalence of Bacterial Codetection and Outcomes for Infants Intubated for Respiratory Infections.

Pediatr Crit Care Med

July 2024

Red Colaborativa Pediátrica de Latinoamérica (LARed Network), Montevideo, Uruguay.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to find out how common respiratory bacterial codetection is in children under 2 years old who are intubated for acute lower respiratory tract infections, mainly viral bronchiolitis, and to see how it affects the duration of mechanical ventilation.
  • It analyzed 472 children, finding that 29% had bacterial codetection, with younger age and positive RSV tests linked to higher rates, while codetection didn't show a clear connection to longer mechanical ventilation duration.
  • The research suggests that while bacterial codetection is common, it may not significantly impact the length of time patients need invasive mechanical ventilation.
