Background: Currently, excess ventilation has been grounded under the relationship between minute-ventilation/carbon dioxide output ( V ˙ E - V ˙ CO 2 ). Alternatively, a new approach for ventilatory efficiency ( η E V ˙ ) has been published.

Objective: Our main hypothesis is that comparatively low levels of η E V ˙ between chronic heart failure (CHF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are attainable for a similar level of maximum and submaximal aerobic performance, conversely to long-established methods ( V ˙ E - V ˙ CO 2 slope and intercept).

Skewed X-chromosome Inactivation in Women with Idiopathic Intellectual Disability is Indicative of Pathogenic Variants.

Mol Neurobiol

July 2023

Human Genome and Stem-Cell Research Center, Department of Genetics and Evolutionary Biology, Institute of Biosciences, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Intellectual disability (ID) is an early onset impairment in cognitive functioning and adaptive behavior, affecting approximately 1% of the population worldwide. Extreme skewing of X-chromosome inactivation (XCI) can be associated with ID phenotypes caused by pathogenic variants in the X chromosome. We analyzed the XCI pattern in blood samples of 194 women with idiopathic ID, using the androgen receptor gene (AR) methylation assay.

Introduction: Erythema multiforme (EM) is a reactive mucocutaneous disorder typically initiated by viral infections. Although the management of EM differs according to the clinical course and trigger factor, it is not clear whether antiviral suppressive therapies may be useful in cases related to such infections. Moreover, the treatment is most often based on supportive care directed towards only the symptoms.

The Use of Natural Fiber-Rich Food Product Is Safe and Reduces Aberrant Crypt Foci in a Pre-Clinical Model.

Nutrients

August 2021

Center for Studies in Stem Cells, Cell Therapy and Toxicological Genetics-CeTroGen, University Hospital Maria Aparecida Pedrossian, Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, Campo Grande 79080-190, Brazil.

Background: Colorectal cancer is a highly prevalent disease, requiring effective strategies for prevention and treatment. The present research aimed to formulate a natural fiber-rich food product (NFRFP) and to evaluate its safety, toxicogenetics, and effects on aberrant crypt foci induced by 1,2-dimethyl-hydrazine in a preclinical model.

Methods: A total of 78 male Wistar rats were distributed in six experimental groups: negative control, positive control (1,2-Dimethylhydrazine-40 mg/Kg), and four groups fed with 10% NFRFP: NFRFP, pre-treatment protocol, simultaneous treatment, and post-treatment protocol.

Background: Fistulous area being A control and B laser group: Arrows indicate fistulous tract much thinner in B. Treating anal fistulae is still a great challenge due to the possibility of fecal incontinence after surgery and that the use of laser has been gaining space in medicine, including as an inducing method of healing.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of low-level laser therapy on fistula-in-ano treatment in rats.

Congenital chromoanagenesis in the routine postnatal chromosomal microarray analyses.

Am J Med Genet A

August 2021

The Human Genome and Stem Cell Research Center, Department of Genetics and Evolutionary Biology, Institute of Biosciences, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

Chromosomal microarray analyses (CMA) have greatly increased both the yield and diagnostic accuracy of postnatal analysis; it has been used as a first-tier cytogenetic test in patients with intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, and multiple congenital abnormalities. During the last 15 years, we performed CMA in approximately 8,000 patients with neurodevelopmental and/or congenital disorders, of which 13 (0.16%) genetically catastrophic complex chromosomal rearrangements were identified.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, MN 55905, USA.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have an effect on maternal anxiety and influence postpartum experience.

Objective: To study the prevalence of maternal anxiety in late pregnancy in the context of the COVID-19 outbreak in Brazil and to analyze its association with maternal knowledge and concerns about the pandemic.

Methods: This was a national multicenter cross-sectional study performed in 10 different public university hospitals, between 1 June and 31 August 2020, in Brazil.

Background: There is still a need for progress in the treatment of transsphincteric anal fistulae and the use of herbal medicines seems promising.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of Stryphnodendron adstringens associated with fistulotomy and primary sphincteroplasty in the treatment of transsphincteric fistulae in rats.

Methods: Thirty Wistar rats were used, which were submitted to transsphincteric fistulas with steel wire 0; after 30 days a treatment was performed according to the group.

Background: Anal fistula is by definition the communication between the rectum or anal canal with the perineal region, which may be epithelialized and has cryptoglandular origin in 90% of cases. There are a large number of techniques for successfully treating trans-sphincteric fistulas of 20-50%, including primary sphincteroplasty, but it is not clear whether the material used would influence the outcome.

Aim: To analyze the efficacy of polydioxanone and polypropylene wire in primary post-fistulotomy sphincteroplasty in the treatment of trans-sphincteric fistulas in rats.

We aimed to characterize HIV-1 molecular epidemiology and transmission clusters among heterosexual (HET) and men who have sex with men (MSM) individuals, as well as transmitted drug resistance mutations (TDRM) in Central-Western Brazil. This cross-sectional survey was conducted among 190 antiretroviral naïve HIV-1 infected individuals. Proviral DNA was extracted, and nested PCR amplified partial gene (PR/RT).

Dermatology Service, Hospital Maria Aparecida Pedrossian, Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul, Campo Grande (MS), Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • Fogo selvagem is an autoimmune skin disease primarily affecting young adults in rural Brazil, characterized by the formation of superficial blisters due to the loss of adhesion in the skin's upper layers.
  • The disease is linked to a mix of genetic, environmental (like insect bites), and immune factors, and can resemble other skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis and lupus.
  • Treatment typically involves systemic corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive medications, with many patients achieving stability or remission over time.

Familial autoimmunity and polyautoimmunity in 60 Brazilian Midwest patients with systemic sclerosis.

Rev Bras Reumatol Engl Ed

Program of Medical Residence in Rheumatology, Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), Campo Grande, MS, Brazil; Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de São Paulo (USP), São Paulo, SP, Brazil; Department of Internal Medicine, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), Campo Grande, MS, Brazil; Service of Rheumatology, Hospital Universitário, Hospital Maria Aparecida Pedrossian, Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), Campo Grande, MS, Brazil.

Introduction: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a connective tissue disease of unknown etiology, characterized by a triad of vascular injury, autoimmunity and tissue fibrosis. It is known that a positive family history is the greatest risk factor already identified for the development of SSc in a given individual. Preliminary observation of a high prevalence of polyautoimmunity and of familial autoimmunity in SSc patients support the idea that different autoimmune phenotypes may share common susceptibility variants.
