The International Staging System for multiple myeloma recently underwent a second revision (R2-ISS) to include gain/amplification of 1q21 and account for the additive prognostic significance of multiple high-risk features. The phase 3 ICARIA-MM (isatuximab-pomalidomide-dexamethasone vs. pomalidomide-dexamethasone) and IKEMA (isatuximab-carfilzomib-dexamethasone vs.

Rhabdomyosarcomas, malignant mesenchymal tumors of skeletal striated muscle tissue cells, are usually rare in adults. However, when they occur in this population, the prognosis is usually poor, especially if the condition is associated with molecular factors such as the PAX3-FOXO1 fusion. Here, We report a case of paratesticular alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in an adult patient who initially complained of increased scrotal volume for two years and presented with a PAX3-FOXO1 fusion.

Aims: The use of ultrasound (US)-guided venous puncture for cardiac pacing/defibrillation lead placement may minimize the risk of periprocedural complications and radiation exposure. However, none of the published studies have been sufficiently powered to recommend this approach as the standard of care. We compare the safety and efficacy of ultrasound-guided axillary venous puncture (US-AVP) vs.

Background: Proper analysis and interpretation of health care data can significantly improve patient outcomes by enhancing services and revealing the impacts of new technologies and treatments. Understanding the substantial impact of temporal shifts in these data is crucial. For example, COVID-19 vaccination initially lowered the mean age of at-risk patients and later changed the characteristics of those who died.

Background: COVID-19 vaccines effectively prevent infection and hospitalization. However, few population-based studies have compared the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 using advanced statistical methods. Our objective is to address this evidence gap by comparing vaccinated and unvaccinated patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disease with a low prevalence, for which more than 50 types have been described. This group of neurodegenerative diseases can present as different phenotypes with varying progression rates and clinical manifestations of different severities. Herein, we systematically reviewed existing medical literature to describe the main characteristics of polyneuropathy in patients with SCA types 2, 3, and 10.

Context: COVID-19 induces complex distress across physical, psychological, and social realms and palliative care (PC) has the potential to mitigate this suffering significantly.
Objectives: To describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients with an indication of PC, compared to patients who had no indication, in different pandemic waves.
Methods: This retrospective multicenter observational cohort included patients from 40 hospitals, admitted from March 2020 to August 2022.

Tricuspid regurgitation, once considered a relatively benign condition, has now gathered significant attention due to new evidence showing its impact on both short- and long-term follow-up. While surgical intervention remains the established standard approach for treating severe tricuspid regurgitation, current guidelines provide Class I indication for intervention in only a limited set of scenarios. This review delves into the present and future perspectives of surgical tricuspid regurgitation management, examining aspects such as disease prognosis, surgical indications, outcomes, and a comprehensive overview of past and upcoming clinical trials.

Background: Isatuximab is an anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody approved for the treatment of relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. Previous analyses of the IKEMA trial showed prolonged progression-free survival in patients with this disease who received isatuximab in combination with carfilzomib-dexamethasone as compared with those who received carfilzomib-dexamethasone alone. Herein, we report the analysis of overall survival from the IKEMA trial.

Bintrafusp alfa is a first-in-class bifunctional fusion protein composed of the extracellular domain of the human transforming growth factor β receptor II (or transforming growth factor β trap) fused via a flexible linker to the C-terminus of each heavy chain of an immunoglobulin G1 antibody blocking programmed cell death 1 ligand 1.
Objective: To evaluate the safety and response rates of bintrafusp alfa in patients with recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer.

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially those on dialysis or who have received a kidney transplant (KT), are considered more vulnerable to severe COVID-19. This susceptibility is attributed to advanced age, a higher frequency of comorbidities, and the chronic immunosuppressed state, which may exacerbate their susceptibility to severe outcomes. Therefore, our study aimed to compare the clinical characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 in KT patients with those on chronic dialysis and non-CKD patients in a propensity score-matched cohort study.

Background: SHARPEN was the first dedicated score for in-hospital mortality prediction in infective endocarditis (IE) regardless of cardiac surgery.
Objectives: To analyze the ability of the SHARPEN score to predict in-hospital and post-discharge mortality and compare it with that of the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI).

Although rare, Angiostrongylus costaricensis infection may be a more prevalent etiology of inflammatory bowel disease than ulcerative colitis and Chron's disease in endemic areas in Central and South America. The present study reviewed the occurrence of A. costaricensis in Brazil, its clinical presentation and pathology; and proposed diagnostic criteria and case definitions for abdominal angiostrongyliasis (AA).

Purpose Of Review: This review offers insights into percutaneous mitral valve management, emphasizing pivotal trials that contributed to its evolution.
Recent Findings: Mitral regurgitation (MR) is a highly prevalent heart valve disease, with surgical intervention being the gold standard for managing primary MR. However, a notable proportion of patients face ineligibility criteria or are at high surgical risk, particularly in the setting of secondary MR.

Lung cancer is a major cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) represents most lung cancer cases, and approximately one-third of patients present with stage III disease at diagnosis. As multiple treatment plans can be adopted for these patients depending on tumor size and nodal staging, stage III NSCLC management is challenging.

Background: Although dementia has emerged as an important risk factor for severe SARS-CoV-2 infection, results on COVID-19-related complications and mortality are not consistent. We examined the clinical presentations and outcomes of COVID-19 in a multicentre cohort of in-hospital patients, comparing those with and without dementia.
Methods: This retrospective observational study comprises COVID-19 laboratory-confirmed patients aged ≥ 60 years admitted to 38 hospitals from 19 cities in Brazil.
