Background: We present a new method to stabilize proximal crescentic osteotomies (PCOs) for the correction of moderate to severe hallux valgus.

Methods: A single-center prospective study with a consecutive series of 72 patients (94 feet) with a PCO was performed using a head locking X-plate. The primary aim was to investigate the stability of the osteotomy, measuring the dorsal elevation of the first metatarsal head, first cuneiform height, talus-first metatarsal angle, and first metatarsal inclination pre- and postoperatively.

Background: Greenstick fractures suffered during growth have a high risk for refracture and posttraumatic deformity, particularly at the forearm diaphysis. The use of a preemptive completion of the fracture by manipulation of the concave cortex is controversial and data supporting this approach are few.

Background: Many cancer patients use alternative therapies in addition to conventional treatment. In a survey among such patients, we assessed the prevalence of and the motivation for alternative therapy use in a rural area of Switzerland.

Methods: From 1st February to 30th November 2001, we interviewed 108 patients treated in the oncology outpatient clinic of the Langenthal District General Hospital, Switzerland, using a structured questionnaire.
