Ectoparasites affect the skin, causing different clinical manifestations through direct mechanical damage, blood consumption, pathogen transmission, hypersensitivity reactions, or toxin inoculation. Dermatological ultrasound is the imaging modality of choice to evaluate these superficial lesions, detecting submillimetric alterations in a non-invasive and innocuous way. This review helps the radiologist describe the imaging findings of lesions caused by mosquitoes, myiasis, bees, spiders, and scorpions, with suggestive ultrasound patterns.

Introduction: Central to neurosurgical care, neurosurgical education is particularly needed in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where opportunities for neurosurgical training are limited due to social and economic constraints and an inadequate workforce. The present paper aims (1) to evaluate the validity and usability of a cadaver-free hybrid system in the context of LMICs and (2) to report their learning needs and whether the courses meet those needs via a comprehensive survey.

Methods: From April to November 2021, a non-profit initiative consisting of a series of innovative cadaver-free courses based on virtual and practical training was organized.

Antifungal susceptibility testing (AST) is crucial in clinical settings to guide appropriate therapy. Nevertheless, discrepancies between treatment response and some results still persist, particularly in detecting resistance to amphotericin B (AMB) in () . This study aimed to assess the susceptibility patterns of 48 recent isolates of to 9 antifungal agents and explore the feasibility of using a CLSI reference-based method to identify AMB resistance.

Introduction: Resolution of underlying urinary tract anomalies prior to kidney transplantation in patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) secondary to uropathy, has been historically supported under the argument that this would help prevent infectious complications and graft loss. We propose to perform earlier kidney transplantation with a transient vesicostomy, deferring resolution of the uropathy to the post-transplantation period. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of kidney transplantation in children with a vesicostomy.

The Surviving Sepsis Campaign International Guidelines for the Management of Septic Shock and Sepsis-associated Organ Dysfunction in Children was released in 2020 and is intended for use in all global settings that care for children with sepsis. However, practitioners managing children with sep sis in resource-limited settings (RLS) face several challenges and disease patterns not experienced by those in resource-rich settings. Based upon our collective experience from RLS, we aimed to reflect on the difficulties of implementing the international guidelines.

Background: Precise determination of the causal chain that leads to community deaths in children in low- and middle-income countries is critical to estimating all causes of mortality accurately and to planning preemptive strategies for targeted allocation of resources to reduce this scourge.

Methods: An active surveillance population-based study that combined minimally invasive tissue sampling (MITS) and verbal autopsies (VA) among children under 5 was conducted in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from September 2018 to December 2020 to define the burden of all causes of community deaths.

Results: Among 90 cases enrolled (86% of parental acceptance), 81 had complete MITS, 15.

Objective: To study worldwide differences in childhood diabetes, comparing relevant indicators among five regions within the SWEET initiative.

Subjects: We investigated 26 726 individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) from 54 centers in the European region; 7768 individuals from 30 centers in the Asia/Middle East/Africa region; 2642 people from five centers in Australia/New Zealand; 10 839 individuals from seven centers in North America, and 1114 patients from five centers in South America.

Methods: The SWEET database was analyzed based on the following inclusion criteria: T1D, time period 2015-2019, and age < 21 years, with analysis of the most recent documented year of therapy.

Interferon-stimulated gene 15 ( was the first ubiquitin-like modifier protein identified that acts by protein conjugation (ISGylation) and is thought to modulate IFN-induced inflammation. Here, we report a new patient from a non-consanguineous Argentinian family, who was followed for recurrent ulcerative skin lesions, cerebral calcifications and lung disease. Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) revealed two novel compound heterozygous variants (c.

[Use (and abuse) of antibiotics in perinatal medicine].

An Pediatr (Engl Ed)

September 2020

Sociedad Iberoamericana de Neonatología (SIBEN).

Introduction: The rational use of antibiotics (ATB) implies that patients receive those adequate for their clinical needs, in correct doses according to their individual conditions, during an adequate period of time, and at the lowest cost for them and their community. The highest rate of ATB abuse occurs during the perinatal period, despite the fact that there is evidence of multiple short- and long-term negative effects. Furthermore, this abuse is associated with increased costs of medical care.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess whether daptomycin is safer and more efficacious than comparators for the treatment of serious infection caused by gram-positive microorganisms.

Methods: Electronic databases (Medline, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and clinical registered trials) were searched to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed the efficacy and safety of daptomycin therapy with any other antibiotic comparator. Two reviewers independently applied selection criteria, performed a quality assessment and extracted the data.

Background & Aims: An optimal allocation system for scarce resources should simultaneously ensure maximal utility, but also equity. The most frequent principles for allocation policies in liver transplantation are therefore criteria that rely on pre-transplant survival (sickest first policy), post-transplant survival (utility), or on their combination (benefit). However, large differences exist between centers and countries for ethical and legislative reasons.

Background: Low levels of AEDs can be secondary drug-drug interactions or related to irregular intake due to poor treatment adherence. This latter behavior is highly suspected in ambulatory pediatric epileptic patients when controls of AEDs are subtherapeutic. However, it cannot be considered for inpatients during long periods of hospitalization.

Development of apheresis techniques and equipment designed for patients weighing less than 10 kg.

Transfus Apher Sci

Sanatorio Güemes, Transfusion Medicine Service, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The procedure of apheresis in pediatric patients, particularly in those with low weight (body weight<10 kg) presents an important challenge due to particularities of this group. There are no specific guidelines or enough scientific evidence to standardize the practice in this group of patients. In addition to the psychological aspect, the correct calculation of the total blood volume, the extracorporeal volume of the cell separator and an estimated decrease in hematocrit must be considered.
