Cardiovascular diseases stand as the leading cause of mortality among adults globally. For decades, comprehensive evidence has underscored the correlation between infections, particularly those involving the respiratory system, and an elevated risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, as well as all-cause mortality. The mechanisms through which infections heighten cardiovascular events are intricate, encompassing immune system activation, systemic inflammation, hypercoagulable states, sympathetic system activation, and increased myocardial oxygen demand.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a serious condition with high morbidity and mortality, and subcutaneous treprostinil is a preferred treatment for high-risk patients in Argentina.
  • A study evaluated the efficacy and safety of treprostinil over 12 months in 51 PAH patients, showing significant improvements in functional class, distance walked, and heart function, alongside a high survival rate.
  • The results support using subcutaneous treprostinil as a first-line therapy for high-risk PAH patients, validating its effectiveness and safety in everyday clinical settings.

We examined the effect of 12 weeks of daily oral administration of pentoxifylline with zinc and folic acid on the semen quality of 36 men with varicocele-associated infertility in an open, uncontrolled study. After 4 weeks of treatment, the proportion of morphologically normal sperm cells was significantly increased; these changes persisted until at least 4 weeks after the end of treatment.

In an open, uncontrolled study, the effect of 12 weeks of daily administration of ketotifen, an antihistamine-like drug with a mast cell stabilizing effect, on the semen quality of 55 men with leukocytospermia and unexplained infertility was examined. After 4 weeks of treatment, white blood cell count dramatically diminished and was accompanied by a significant improvement in sperm motility. A significant increase of morphologically normal sperm cells was observed at 8 weeks of treatment, and these changes remained until at least 4 weeks after the end of treatment.

Objective: Given the immunomodulatory effects of anesthesia and surgery, 2 anesthetic regimens in clinical use were compared to evaluate hemodynamic, stress, and immunologic response in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Patients And Methods: Randomized controlled trial in patients classified ASA I and scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Patients were randomly assigned to the inhaled anesthetic group (13 anesthetized with propofol-fentanyl-isoflurane) or the total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) group (14 patients anesthetized with propofol-remifentanil).
