[Glucocorticoids in leptospira alveolar hemorrhage].

We present the clinical cases of two patients who were admitted to the HIGA San Martín de La Plata emergency ward with a clinical picture compatible with leptospirosis, who evolved with respiratory failure and alveolar hemorrhage. In both, glucocorticoids were administered with good evolution. A bibliographic search of articles published since 2005 in Spanish and English and a review of the topic was carried out.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a myeloid stem cell neoplasm characterized by an expansion of myeloid progenitor cells and the presence of BCR-ABL1 oncoprotein. Since the introduction of specific BCR-ABL1 tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI), overall survival has improved significantly. However, under long-term therapy patients may have residual disease that originates from TKI-resistant leukemic stem cells (LSC).

Mortality and adverse events of special interest with intravenous belimumab for adults with active, autoantibody-positive systemic lupus erythematosus (BASE): a multicentre, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, phase 4 trial.

Background: Belimumab is approved for the treatment of active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Although clinical trials showed a favourable benefit-risk profile, numerical differences in the incidence of mortality and adverse events of special interest (AESIs) have been reported. We assessed the frequency of these events in patients with SLE receiving belimumab or placebo plus standard therapy.

[Social inequities in teenage mothers and the relationship to adverse perinatal outcomes in South American populations].

The aim was to explain differences in the rates of adverse perinatal events in teenage mothers with low and high schooling. The sample was collected from the Latin American Colaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (ECLAMC) database. From a total of 2,443,747 births in 93 hospitals, 66,755 live newborns without congenital malformations were recruited from 2000 to 2017.

Peak expiratory flow and the single-breath counting test as markers of respiratory function in patients with myasthenia gravis.

Introduction: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an antibody-mediated autoimmune disease characterised by fluctuating, fatigable muscle weakness, frequently involving bulbar and respiratory muscles. Considering the severity of respiratory involvement in MG, routine evaluation of respiratory function is essential. The aim of this study was to identify a useful clinical marker of respiratory involvement in patients with MG.

Predictors of renal damage in systemic lupus erythematous patients: data from a multiethnic, multinational Latin American lupus cohort (GLADEL).

Aim: A decrease in proteinuria has been considered protective from renal damage in lupus nephritis (LN), but a cut-off point has yet to be established. The aim of this study was to identify the predictors of renal damage in patients with LN and to determine the best cut-off point for a decrease in proteinuria.

Methods: We included patients with LN defined clinically or histologically.

Background And Aim: dermatological manifestations are normally found in one third of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. In this study, the prevalence, clinical characteristics, intestinal disease activity, and treatment response of neutrophilic dermatoses (pyoderma gangrenosum and Sweet´s syndrome) were determined in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Methods: a retrospective, observational study was performed in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and neutrophilic dermatoses between March 2012 and March 2018.

The Use of a Urinary Balloon Catheter to Control Hemorrhage From Penetrating Torso Trauma: A Single-Center Experience at a Major Inner-City Hospital Trauma Center.

Introduction: Use of a urinary catheter balloon tamponade (UCBT) in controlling traumatic hemorrhage is a frequently employed but infrequently described technique. We aim to discuss the experience of balloon tamponade as a bridge to definitive hemorrhage control in the operating room.

Methods: This is retrospective review at a single institution from January 2008 to December 2018.

Characteristics and outcomes of patients infected with nCoV19 requiring invasive mechanical ventilation in Argentina.

Objective: A novel coronavirus emerged this year as a cause of viral pneumonia. The main characteristics of the virus are rapid transmission, high contagion capacity and potential severity. The objective of this case series study is to describe the clinical characteristics of patients with confirmed coronavirus disease (COVID-19) admitted to different intensive care units in Argentina for mechanical ventilation.

[Argentine Consensus in effective management of anticoagulation clinics for the use of vitamin k antagonists].

Treating an anticoagulated patient with vitamin K antagonists (VKA) remains a challenge, especially in areas where dicoumarins are still the first drug of choice due to the cost of other oral anticoagulants. Anticoagulation clinics have proven to be the most efficient and safe way to avoid thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications and to keep patients in optimal treatment range. However, they require adequate infrastructure and trained personnel to work properly.

Open Tibial Shaft Fractures: Treatment Patterns in Latin America.

Background: Open tibial shaft fractures are an important source of disability in Latin America. High-income countries (HICs) worldwide have established standardized treatment protocols for open tibial fractures, but less is known about their treatment in middle-income countries (MICs) in Latin America. This survey of Latin American orthopaedic surgeons characterizes open tibial fracture treatment patterns.

Evaluation of belimumab treatment in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus in a clinical practice setting: Results from a 24-month OBSErve study in Argentina.

Objective: To describe clinical effectiveness of belimumab for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in real-world practice in Argentina.

Methods: This retrospective, observational study analysed medical record data of patients with SLE treated with belimumab in 15 centres in Argentina. Primary endpoint: overall clinical response (assessed on a scale similar to the 6-point Physician Global Assessment) at months 6, 12, 18 and 24, all versus index (belimumab initiation).

Background: Non-stenotic intracranial and systemic atherosclerosis are associated with ischemic stroke. We report frequency and response to anticoagulant vs. antiplatelet prophylaxis of patients with embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) who have non-stenotic intracranial atherosclerosis and/or systemic atherosclerosis.

Hyaluronan Metabolism is Associated with DNA Repair Genes in Breast and Colorectal Cancer. Screening of Potential Progression Markers Using qPCR.

In this work, we compared mRNA levels of Hyaluronan (HA) metabolism members and BRCA genes, known to be involved in the tumoral process, between tumor and non-tumor adjacent tissue and its correlation with previously proposed biomarkers (ER, PR, HER2 and KI67) in order to assess their value as a progression biomarkers. We show alteration in HA metabolism in colorectal but not breast cancer. However, we found a decrease in Hyaluronidase 1 HYAL1 levels in the breast but not colorectal cancer.

Clinical features, damage accrual, and survival in patients with familial systemic lupus erythematosus: data from a multi-ethnic, multinational Latin American lupus cohort.

Objectives: This study aimed to compare the clinical features, damage accrual, and survival of patients with familial and sporadic systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Methods: A multi-ethnic, multinational Latin American SLE cohort was studied. Familial lupus was defined as patients with a first-degree SLE relative; these relatives were interviewed in person or by telephone.

Myocardial damage and myocardial dysfunction are postulated as a possible causal nexus. Frequent findings of elevated troponin levels and electrocardiographic anomalies support this concept.

Color has demonstrated to have an influence on picture naming tasks. Objects with high color diagnosticity are recalled faster than objects with low value. That is why the Argentinean Psycholinguistic Picture Naming Test in color (PAPDIC in Spanish) was designed.

New Scheme of Intermittent Benznidazole Administration in Patients Chronically Infected with Trypanosoma cruzi: Clinical, Parasitological, and Serological Assessment after Three Years of Follow-Up.

In a pilot study, we showed that the intermittent administration of benznidazole in chronic Chagas disease patients resulted in a low rate of treatment suspension and therapeutic failure, as assessed by quantitative PCR (qPCR) at the end of treatment. Here, a 3-year posttreatment follow-up study of the same cohort of patients is presented. The treatment scheme consisted of 12 doses of benznidazole at 5 mg/kg of body weight/day in two daily doses every 5 days.

Scoliosis in spinal muscular atrophy: is the preoperative magnetic resonance imaging necessary?

Purpose: To determine the prevalence of intraspinal alterations in scoliosis due to Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

Methods: Cross-sectional, observational, descriptive study. Fifty-six patients with SMA diagnosis required surgical treatment due to scoliosis.

Sociodemographic data, comorbidities, RA characteristics, disease activity, and current treatment were registered.
