BRAF mutational status is associated with survival outcomes in locally advanced resectable and metastatic NSCLC.

Lung Cancer

August 2024

Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda, Madrid, Spain; Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Puerta de Hierro-Segovia de Arana, Majadahonda, Madrid, Spain. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Immunotherapy treatments show high effectiveness in advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but the impact of BRAF mutations in these cases is unclear.
  • In a study of 116 stage IIIA/B and 84 stage IV patients, BRAF mutations were found in a small percentage, with all patients who had these mutations remaining alive and disease-free at the study's cutoff.
  • BRAF-mutated patients had a 100% pathological complete response rate to neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy compared to a 44.3% rate in BRAF wild-type patients, suggesting that BRAF mutations could indicate better outcomes for those undergoing immunotherapy.

Introduction:  Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) poses a complex challenge and often leads to postthrombotic syndrome (PTS), a debilitating complication. The emergence of venous stents offers a potential preventive avenue against this complication. This study aimed to provide consensus recommendations on the use of venous stent for DVT.

Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive, cost-effective, and generally reliable instrument measuring pulse rate and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO). However, these measurements can be affected by the patient's internal or external factors, including the type of pulse oximeter device (POD). (1) This study's objective was to identify potential environmental factors that may impact the measurements taken by three PODs.

February 2024

Universidad de Extremadura, Departamento de Terapeútica Médico Quirúrgica, Facultad de Medicina y Ciencias de la Salud, Badajoz, Spain; Department of HBP Surgery and Liver Transplantation, Hospital Universitario de Badajoz, Badajoz, Spain. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the recurrence of isolated pancreatic metastases from Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) and evaluates the outcomes of repeat pancreatic resections after initial surgery.
  • It involved a retrospective analysis of 131 resections in 116 patients from January 2010 to May 2020, comparing those who had single versus iterative pancreatic surgeries.
  • Results indicated that while disease-free survival (DFS) rates were slightly better in the iterative group, overall survival (OS) rates were similar for both groups, suggesting that repeat surgery is a viable option for managing RCC-related pancreatic metastases.

Background: The burden of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains high in Spain, with lung cancer accounting for 20% of cancer-related deaths annually. Programs such as the Spanish Thoracic Tumour Registry (TTR) and the global I-O Optimise initiative have been developed to observe patients in clinical practice with the aim of improving outcomes. This analysis examined treatment patterns and survival in patients with stage III NSCLC from the TTR.

Unlabelled: During a pandemic, and given the need to quickly screen febrile and non-febrile humans, it is necessary to know the concordance between different thermometers (TMs) and understand how environmental factors influence the measurements made by these instruments.

Objective: The objective of this study is to identify the potential influence of environmental factors on the measurements made by four different TMs and the concordance between these instruments in a hospital setting.

Method: The study employed a cross-sectional observational methodology.

Central nervous system involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus: Data from the Spanish Society of Rheumatology Lupus Register (RELESSER).

Semin Arthritis Rheum

February 2023

IRIDIS Group (Investigation in Rheumatology and Immune-Diseases), Galicia Sur Health Research Institute (IISGS), Vigo, Spain; Department of Rheumatology, University Hospital of Vigo, Vigo, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed how common major central nervous system issues are in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and their impact on survival and mortality.
  • Out of 3,591 SLE patients, 11.5% experienced significant CNS neuropsychiatric problems, leading to higher annual mortality rates, particularly from cerebrovascular disease and organic brain syndrome.
  • The findings indicate that major CNS complications significantly increase mortality risk, with specific issues like CVD and organic brain syndrome having the worst survival outcomes.

This retrospective observational study analyzed the clinical characteristics, treatment patterns and outcomes of 120 patients with advanced ALK-positive non-small-cell lung cancer (ALK+ NSCLC) according to data collected between November 2019 and October 2020 in 38 Spanish hospitals. Patients had progressed after 1-5 prior treatment lines (which included crizotinib in any prior line) and received subsequent therapy with alectinib in a local expanded access program. Median age was 58.

Objective: In Spain, due to the lack of data at national level a lung cancer registry, the Thoracic Tumour Registry (TTR), was created. Such registry should demonstrate comparability with population-based data to ensure representativeness at population level. The aim is to compare the socio-demographic characteristics of the TTR with incidence data from the Red de Registros de Cáncer (REDECAN) and mortality data from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE).

Purpose: Characterization of the T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire may be a promising source for predictive biomarkers of pathologic response to immunotherapy in locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Experimental Design: In this study, next-generation TCR sequencing was performed in peripheral blood and tissue samples of 40 patients with NSCLC, before and after neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy (NADIM clinical trial, NCT03081689), considering their complete pathologic response (CPR) or non-CPR. Beyond TCR metrics, tissue clones were ranked by their frequency and spatiotemporal evolution of top 1% clones was determined.

Importance: Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) is far less common and studied in a Caucasian population than in an Asian population, and the optimal treatment approach remains to be confirmed.

Methods: A 52-week, double-masked, sham-controlled, phase 4, investigator-initiated randomized clinical trial (RCT) in naive symptomatic Caucasian patients with PCV treated with aflibercept in a treat-and-extend regimen (T&E) (intravitreal aflibercept injection [IVAI] T&E). Patients were randomized at week 16 to receive IVAI T&E plus either sham photodynamic therapy (PDT) or standard fluence PDT with verteporfin.
