Aims: Periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) pose significant challenges to patients and healthcare systems worldwide. The aim of this study was to estimate the health-economic burden of reimbursement payment in Europe for PJIs following primary hip and knee arthroplasty.
Methods: The calculation was based on health-economic modelling using data on primary hip and knee arthroplasties for the year 2019 from the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) and published infection rates to estimate the total number of hip and knee PJIs in 30 European countries.

Background: is one of the most important opportunistic pathogens causing healthcare-associated and community-acquired infections worldwide. In recent years, the increase in antibiotic resistance and infections caused by hypervirulent poses great public health concerns. In this study, host-pathogen interactions of different strains of human and animal origins were analyzed in microbiological, cell-biological and immunological experiments.

Even today, a non-invasive biomarker to identify donors with enhanced risk for renal impairment is missing. Dickkopf 3 (DKK3) can cause tubulointerstitial fibrosis and is associated with rapid eGFR loss. The aim of our work was to analyze whether DKK3 can be used as a non-invasive alert marker for an increased risk of loss of kidney function in living kidney donors (LKDs).

The treatment of secondary mitral regurgitation (SMR) remains challenging despite the implementation of modern heart failure medication and established catheter-based techniques. Only a subgroup of SMR patients benefit from mitral valve (MV) intervention, and the long-term prognostic benefit of different therapeutic approaches in SMR remains controversial. A literature search was conducted through PubMed and Embase databases to identify relevant studies addressing the pathophysiological background for papillary muscle maneuvers in SMR and currently available surgical techniques.

Background & Aims: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a main cause of acute hepatitis globally. However, immunosuppressed patients regularly develop chronic courses. The aim of this study was to analyse the current status of HEV diagnostics, characterize clinical manifestations and identify risk factors for complicated HEV infections.

Introduction: S-1 has been shown to be an effective adjuvant treatment option for East Asian patients who underwent gastrectomy for stage II/III gastric cancer. We conducted a phase I/II study to evaluate the feasibility, tolerability, and efficacy of administering S-1 in the adjuvant setting after R0-resection of adenocarcinoma of the stomach and esophagogastric junction (EGJ) in Caucasian patients.
Methods: In this single-cohort, open-label, phase I/II trial, we enrolled patients with locally advanced adenocarcinoma of the stomach or EGJ having undergone R0-resection with or without neoadjuvant treatment.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is an important immune mediator and a target for novel antibody therapies. In this study, we aimed to determine whether serum IL-6 levels are associated with immunological risk, allograft rejection and outcomes in kidney transplant (Ktx) patients. We retrospectively analyzed the data of 104 patients who underwent Ktx at our center between 2011 and 2015.

Facial palsy (FP) is a debilitating nerve pathology. Cross Face Nerve Grafting (CFNG) describes a surgical technique that uses nerve grafts to reanimate the paralyzed face. The sural nerve has been shown to be a reliable nerve graft with little donor side morbidity.

We conducted a randomised clinical trial to investigate RHT with cisplatin added to gemcitabine (GPH) compared with gemcitabine (G) in the adjuvant setting of resected pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.
Methods: This randomised, multicentre, open-label trial randomly assigned patients to either GPH (gemcitabine 1000 mg/m on day 1, 15 and cisplatin 25 mg/m with RHT on day 2, 3 and 15,16) or to G (gemcitabine 1000 mg/m on day 1,8,15), four-weekly over six cycles.

Background: The Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis score (LRINEC) is a simple tool used to support early diagnosis of Necrotizing Fasciitis (NF). The aim of this study was to investigate whether the LRINEC is suitable as a progression and prognosis parameter in patients with NF. Methods: In this retrospective study, laboratory data of 70 patients with NF were analyzed.

Despite available vaccinations COVID-19 case numbers around the world are still growing, and effective medications against severe cases are lacking. In this work, we developed a machine learning model which predicts mortality for COVID-19 patients using data from the multi-center 'Lean European Open Survey on SARS-CoV-2-infected patients' (LEOSS) observational study (>100 active sites in Europe, primarily in Germany), resulting into an AUC of almost 80%. We showed that molecular mechanisms related to dementia, one of the relevant predictors in our model, intersect with those associated to COVID-19.

Background And Objectives: In complex hand traumas nerves and vessels are often destructed without the possibility for primary repair. For bridging defects of nerves, veins and arteries grafts are necessary. Commonly nerve and vein grafts from adjacent donor sites as the wrist, forearm or cubital region are harvested.

Enterococci are commensals of the intestinal tract of many animals and humans. Of the various known and still unnamed new enterococcal species, only isolates of Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis have received increased medical and public health attention. According to textbook knowledge, the majority of infections are caused by E.

Background: Tigecycline is a vital antibiotic treatment option for infections caused by multiresistant bacteria in the intensive care unit (ICU). Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in the ICU requiring continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), but pharmacokinetic data for tigecycline in patients receiving CRRT are lacking.
Methods: Eleven patients mainly with intra-abdominal infections receiving either continuous veno-venous hemodialysis (CVVHD, n = 8) or hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF, n = 3) were enrolled, and plasma as well as effluent samples were collected according to a rich sampling schedule.
