Nuclear Alpha-Synuclein in Parkinson's Disease and the Malignant Transformation in Melanoma.

Neurol Res Int

January 2025

Departamento de Bioquímica, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

Alpha-synuclein (ASyn), a marker of Parkinson's disease (PD) and other neurodegenerative processes, plays pivotal roles in neuronal nuclei and synapses. ASyn and its phosphorylated form at Serine 129 (p-ASyn) are involved in DNA protection and repair, processes altered in aging, neurodegeneration, and cancer. To analyze the localization of p-ASyn in skin biopsies of PD patients and melanoma.

Background: The effective use of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) has significantly improved the life expectancy of people living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, complications have shifted from opportunistic infections to issues such as drug toxicity and resistance, as well as an increase in premature cardiovascular diseases (CVD). These conditions are attributed to chronic immune activation and persistent inflammation caused by HIV, along with lipid abnormalities and insulin resistance.

Aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms and antibiotic sensitivity of odontogenic maxillofacial infections.

Odontology

July 2019

Basic Sciences Laboratory, Faculty of Dentistry, San Luis Potosi University, Zona Universitaria, Av. Manuel Nava 2, 78290, San Luis Potosí, SLP, Mexico.

This study aimed to identify the aerobic and anaerobic causal microorganisms of odontogenic infections and their antibiotic sensitivity. Purulent exudates were taken from patients with odontogenic infections by transdermal puncture, and aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms were identified using biochemical tests. Susceptibility to antibiotics was tested using the Kirby-Bauer method; the inhibition halos were measured according to NCCLS, and based on the results, the microorganisms were classified as susceptible, intermediate or resistant to each antibiotic.

Tau Protein in Oral Mucosa and Cognitive State: A Cross-sectional Study.

Front Neurol

October 2017

Departamento de Bioquímica, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosí, Mexico.

Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the presence of abnormal aggregates of proteins in brain tissue. Among them, the presence of aggregates of phosphorylated Tau protein (p-Tau) is the hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other major neurodegenerative disorders such as corticobasal degeneration and frontotemporal dementia among others. Although Tau protein has previously been assumed to be exclusive to the central nervous system, it is also found in peripheral tissues.

Objectives: To assess the epidemiologic and microbiologic profile and in vitro fluconazole susceptibility of yeasts isolated from the oral mucosa colonization/infection of elderly patients.

Background: It has been reported that in older adults increases the oral colonization by Candida particularly C. non-albicans, showing a decreased response to fluconazole, which increases the risk of recalcitrant local and disseminated candidiasis.

Background: The aim of this study was to compare the days of hospitalization length between patients treated with Moxifloxacin with that of patients treated with a Clindamycin/Ceftriaxone combination and additionally, to isolate and identify the oral pathogens involved in orofacial odontogenic infections.

Material And Methods: A pilot-controlled-clinical-trial was carried out on hospitalized patients with cervicofacial odontogenic abscesses or cellulitis, who were randomly asigned to two study groups: 1) patients who received Moxifloxacin, and 2) patients receiving Clindamycin/Ceftriaxone combination. Infiltrate samples were collected through transdermic or transmucosal punction and later cultured on a media specific for aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms.

Objective: Regulatory Foxp3-expressing T cells (Tregs), IL-10-producing B cells (Bregs), and IDO-expressing dendritic cells (DCregs) downregulate inflammatory processes and induce peripheral tolerance, while Th17A and Th22 cell subpopulations are of proinflammatory nature. The aims of the study were to characterize and to enumerate peripheral Tregs, Bregs, and DCregs and Th17A and Th22 cell subpopulations in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) under belatacept or cyclosporine treatment.

Methods: Forty-one KRT patients (30 under belatacept treatment and 11 under cyclosporine treatment) and 26 healthy donors (HDs) were included in the study.

The purpose of this study was to report our experience with 120 prosthetic valves implanted in 105 patients over an 8-year period. Their preoperative status was compared at an average follow-up period of 4 years (range 1 to 6 years) with the postoperative results. We conclude that the Mexican-made valves (Biomed) meet the highest international quality standards: they are well tolerated by the patients; their performance is excellent and no postoperative dysfunction of the valves was ever detected.
