Percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL) is an effective therapeutic approach in cases of lithiasis, which is prone to complications. In this report we present a case of a 52-year-old female patient with recurrent episodes of lithiasis and, after PCNL, evolution with pain and abdominal distension on the 2nd post-operative day due to a perforation of the gallbladder. An exploratory laparotomy was performed, leading to clinical improvement, and the patient was discharged from the hospital on the 7th day after resolving the choleperitoneum.

Patient Blood Management (PBM) is a holistic approach to managing blood as a resource of each patient; it is a multimodal strategy that is implemented using a set of techniques that can be applied in individual cases. In fact, the overall result of the implementation of PBM cannot be fully appreciated or explained by simply summing up the effects of the individual strategies and techniques used, since they can only produce the expected ideal result if combined. Implementing a PBM program in healthcare offers several benefits including improved patient safety, better outcomes, cost savings, conservation of resources, evidence-based practice, transfusion alternatives, improved quality of care, compliance with accreditation standards, patient-centered care, and professional education and training.

Patient Blood Management (PBM) is a multidimensional approach that seeks to optimize the use of blood and its components in patients. This matter emerged as a response to the need to reduce unnecessary exposure to blood transfusions and their potential risks. In the past, blood transfusion was often overused resulting in complications and high costs.

The aim of this study is to evaluate , and gene polymorphisms and occurrence of endometrial polyps. In addition, we intended to evaluate the clinical and epidemiological features of patients with and without the presence of the disease, characterizing the possible risk factors. A cross-sectional study was performed, with a total of 309 women, including 236 in the group of women with endometrial polyp confirmed by hysteroscopy and anatomical pathological examination and 73 in the group of people with diagnostic hysteroscopy without abnormal findings from the macroscopic point of view.

Introduction: Dengue is an important mosquito-borne disease in tropical and subtropical regions. Adhesion molecules have not been systematically characterized in the renal tissue of patients with severe dengue (SD). The objective of this study was to detect viral antigens in samples from patients that evolved with SD, correlating with the expression of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, VE-cadherin, and E-selectin to contribute to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of SD.

Background: Early antibiotic switch and early discharge protocols have not been widely studied in Latin America. Our objective was to describe real-world treatment patterns, resource use, and estimate opportunities for early switch from intravenous to oral antibiotics and early discharge for patients hospitalized with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus complicated skin and soft-tissue infections.
Materials/methods: This retrospective medical chart review recruited 72 physicians from Brazil to collect data from patients hospitalized with documented methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus complicated skin and soft tissue infections between May 2013 and May 2015, and discharged alive by June 2015.

Background: The bispectral index parameter is used to guide the titration of general anesthesia; however, many studies have shown conflicting results regarding the benefits of bispectral index monitoring. The objective of this systematic review with meta-analysis is to evaluate the clinical impact of monitoring with the bispectral index parameter.
Methods: The search for evidence in scientific information sources was conducted during December 2013 to January 2015, the following primary databases: Medline/PubMed, LILACS, Cochrane, CINAHL, Ovid, SCOPUS and TESES.

We present a case of disseminated cutaneous histoplasmosis in a male patient, rural worker, HIV positive for 20 years, with a history of irregular use of antiretroviral therapy, T cell counts below 50 cells/mm3 and with good response to treatment with Itraconazole. We highlight importance of skin lesions in clarifying early diagnosis, since this co-infection often leads patients to death.

Glomus tumor is a painful tumor derived from the glomus terminal which regulates blood circulation and body temperature Despite its rarity, particular attention needs to be paid to symptoms associated with this tumor: paroxysmal pain, sensitivity to local pressure and cold, and its location - typically in the distal phalanx. Manifestation of extradigital occurrence is possible. Single lesions are most common in adult females, while multiple lesions are prevalent in children and adolescents, generally those with a positive family history.

Objective: To estimate the degree of internal exposure to organochlorine pesticides (persistent organic pollutants, POP) among inhabitants of an open-air dump.
Methods: This was an observational study with simultaneous measurement and control, in which the criterion for subjects was that they dwelled in an area contaminated by POP and the effect of such contamination was the concentration of such substances into the blood. The study population consisted of 238 people living on an open-air dump in Pil es, in the municipality of Cubatão, SP, Brazil, and the control population was formed by 258 people, also resident in that municipality, in the Cota 200 district.
