The increase in the elderly population in Spain requires the care and techniques that apply to geriatric, dependent and chronic patients to be updated. Effects of dry needling of active trigger points in the scalene muscles in individuals with mechanical neck pain: a randomized clinical trial.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of dry needling (DN) versus pressure release over scalene muscle trigger points (TrPs) on pain, related disability, and inspiratory vital capacity in individuals with neck pain.

Methods: In this randomized, single-blind trial, 30 patients with mechanical neck pain and active TrPs in the scalene musculature were randomly allocated to trigger point dry needling (TrP-DN; n = 15) or pressure release (n = 15) groups. The DN group received a single session of DN of active TrPs in the anterior scalene muscles, and the pressure release group received a single session of TrP pressure release over the same muscle lasting 30 s.

[Benchmarking in patient identification: An opportunity to learn].

Objective: To perform a benchmarking on the safe identification of hospital patients involved in "Club de las tres C" (Calidez, Calidad y Cuidados) in order to prepare a common procedure for this process.

Material And Methods: A descriptive study was conducted on the patient identification process in palliative care and stroke units in 5medium-stay hospitals. The following steps were carried out: Data collection from each hospital; organisation and data analysis, and preparation of a common procedure for this process.

Material And Method: The standard was revised, and the Quality Management System documentation was updated, consisting of a Quality Manual and 7 control procedures. All the existing procedures were coded in accordance with the documentation control process.

Introduction: Urinary incontinence (UI) has been poorly studied in Spanish nursing homes. The objective is to determine the prevalence and related factors of UI in institutionalized older people in Madrid, Spain.

Methods: A probabilistic sample of 754 subjects 65 years of age and older living in public and private institutions in Madrid was randomly selected through stratified cluster sampling.

[A multidisciplinary approach to falls in a medium-stay hospital].

Objective: To approach the problem of the falls in an average stay hospital; identifying the patients of greater risk; and find out the circumstances in which the falls occurred.

Patients And Methods: A descriptive study of all the patients who entered the Guadarrama Hospital (Madrid) during year 2007 (n = 920). On admission, all patients were assessed using the Stratify falls risk scale, their cognitive and functional situation, unit of hospitalisation, record of falls and circumstances under which the falls occurred.
