Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues (GnRHa) on adult height in girls with idiopathic central precocious puberty (CPP), a condition that can hinder growth.
  • The research involved data from 465 girls diagnosed with idiopathic CPP across 55 centers in Spain from 1998 to 2012, assessing their growth and development while undergoing treatment.
  • Findings indicate that GnRHa treatment can help maintain genetic growth potential, with results showing a slight difference between achieved adult height and target height, suggesting some benefit in height preservation.

Introduction: Following the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in March 2020, pulmonary function testing (PFT) laboratories underwent a transformation, with a reduction in the number of tests or closure in some cases. The aim of this work was to know the activity of PFT in Spain and the modification of this activity due to the pandemic.

Material And Methods: A protocolised survey was carried out to members of the PFT laboratories through the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR).

Non-binary people face numerous stressors in their daily lives, including personal, interpersonal, and environmental. These stressors gain strength when such individuals access healthcare services, and discrimination and cisgenderism become the main barrier to obtaining gender-affirming healthcare. This study aimed to describe the experiences of non-binary people regarding the care and medical attention received in Catalonia (Spain).

Analysis of muscle magnetic resonance imaging of a large cohort of patient with VCP-mediated disease reveals characteristic features useful for diagnosis.

December 2023

John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre, Newcastle University Translational and Clinical Research Institute and Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Center for Life, Central Parkway, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE13BZ, United Kingdom.

Background: The diagnosis of patients with mutations in the VCP gene can be complicated due to their broad phenotypic spectrum including myopathy, motor neuron disease and peripheral neuropathy. Muscle MRI guides the diagnosis in neuromuscular diseases (NMDs); however, comprehensive muscle MRI features for VCP patients have not been reported so far.

Methods: We collected muscle MRIs of 80 of the 255 patients who participated in the "VCP International Study" and reviewed the T1-weighted (T1w) and short tau inversion recovery (STIR) sequences.

Background And Objectives: The prevalence and progression of respiratory muscle dysfunction in patients with limb girdle muscular dystrophies (LGMDs) has been only partially described to date. Most reports include cross-sectional data on a limited number of patients making it difficult to gain a wider perspective on respiratory involvement throughout the course of the disease and to compare the most prevalent LGMD subtypes.

Methods: We reviewed the results of spirometry studies collected longitudinally in our cohort of patients in routine clinical visits from 2002 to 2020 along with additional clinical and genetic data.

Although there are several effective drugs for the treatment of Crohn's disease (CD), almost 70% of patients will require surgical resection during their lifetime. This procedure is not always curative, as endoscopic recurrence occurs in 65%-90% of patients in the first year after surgery. The aetiology of the recurrence is unknown; however, several studies have shown how the resident microbiota is modified after surgery.

Background: Surgical site infection is 1 of the most frightening complications in vascular surgery due to its high morbimortality. The use of intradermal sutures for skin closure might be associated with a reduction in infections incidence. However, the data available in the literature is scarce and primarily built on low-evidence studies.

Background: We aimed to examine whether using a high fraction of inspired oxygen (FIO) in the context of an individualised intra- and postoperative open-lung ventilation approach could decrease surgical site infection (SSI) in patients scheduled for abdominal surgery.

Methods: We performed a multicentre, randomised controlled clinical trial in a network of 21 university hospitals from June 6, 2017 to July 19, 2018. Patients undergoing abdominal surgery were randomly assigned to receive a high (0.

Study of the effect of anti-rhGAA antibodies at low and intermediate titers in late onset Pompe patients treated with ERT.

Article Synopsis
  • Late onset Pompe disease (LOPD) leads to gradual weakness in skeletal and respiratory muscles, which is treated with enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) using alglucosidase alpha (rhGAA).
  • In a study of 25 ERT-treated patients, 72% developed antibodies against rhGAA, but their impact on clinical progression was examined with muscle function tests, spirometry, and quantitative MRI over one year.
  • Results showed that low and intermediate antibody levels did not significantly affect muscle function, breathing tests, or MRI outcomes, suggesting these antibodies may not hinder the effectiveness of the treatment.

Introduction: Surgical site infection (SSI) is a serious postoperative complication that increases morbidity and healthcare costs. SSIs tend to increase as the partial pressure of tissue oxygen decreases: previous trials have focused on trying to reduce them by comparing high versus conventional inspiratory oxygen fractions (FIO) in the perioperative period but did not use a protocolised ventilatory strategy. The open-lung ventilatory approach restores functional lung volume and improves gas exchange, and therefore it may increase the partial pressure of tissue oxygen for a given FIO.

Background: Postoperative pulmonary and non-pulmonary complications are common problems that increase morbidity and mortality in surgical patients, even though the incidence has decreased with the increased use of protective lung ventilation strategies. Previous trials have focused on standard strategies in the intraoperative or postoperative period, but without personalizing these strategies to suit the needs of each individual patient and without considering both these periods as a global perioperative lung-protective approach. The trial presented here aims at comparing postoperative complications when using an individualized ventilatory management strategy in the intraoperative and immediate postoperative periods with those when using a standard protective ventilation strategy in patients scheduled for major abdominal surgery.

Background: Binge eating behavior constitutes a central feature of both bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED). Cue exposure therapy (CET) has been proposed as an effective intervention.

Objective: To determine which situations and specific cues trigger higher levels of binge craving and to use the results in the development of virtual reality scenarios in which CET could be applied with BN and BED patients.

The objective of this study was to identify frequent situations and specific cues that produce the craving to binge in Spanish and Italian samples of patients with eating disorders (ED). There were two main aims: to assess transcultural differences in the contexts and cues that elicit food craving; and to develop valid, reliable VR environments for effective cue-exposure therapy (CET) for patients from both countries. Twenty-six Spanish and 75 Italian ED patients completed an ad hoc questionnaire to assess contexts and cues that trigger the craving to binge.
