Background: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) with docetaxel (D) and/or antiandrogen receptor therapies (ARTs) are the standard therapies in metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC). Alterations in the tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) RB1, PTEN, and TP53 are associated with an aggressive evolution and treatment resistance in castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC).
Objective: To study the clinical implications of TSG mRNA expression in mHSPC patients.

Previous studies have suggested a relationship between the number of CAG triplet repeats in the HTT gene and neurodegenerative diseases not related to Huntington's disease (HD). This study seeks to investigate whether the number of CAG repeats of HTT is associated with the risk of developing certain tauopathies and its influence as a modulator of the clinical and neuropathological phenotype. Additionally, it aims to evaluate the potential of polyglutamine staining as a neuropathological screening.

The process of reproductive decision making among women living with HIV is intricate and multifaceted, influenced by health considerations, societal factors, and personal values. In this study, we employed Charmaz's Constructivist Grounded Theory to understand how Spanish women living with HIV make decisions regarding reproduction. We conducted 26 face-to-face interviews until data saturation was achieved.

Using the AT framework and a three-stage study design (discovery, replication, and meta-analysis), we identified 2,173 proteins dysregulated in AD, that were further validated in a third totally independent cohort. Machine learning was implemented to create and validate highly accurate and replicable (AUC>0.

Bone strength is determined not only by bone quantity [bone mineral density (BMD)] but also by bone quality, including matrix composition, collagen fiber arrangement, microarchitecture, geometry, mineralization, and bone turnover, among others. These aspects influence elasticity, the load-bearing and repair capacity of bone, and microcrack propagation and are thus key to fractures and their avoidance. In chronic kidney disease (CKD)-associated osteoporosis, factors traditionally associated with a lower bone mass (advanced age or hypogonadism) often coexist with non-traditional factors specific to CKD (uremic toxins or renal osteodystrophy, among others), which will have an impact on bone quality.

Concerns exist regarding the effects of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs) on multipa-rametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) and clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) detection. Our objective is to analyze the effect of 5-ARI on the prostate imaging-reporting and data system (PI-RADS) distribution and csPCa and insignificant PCa (iPCa) detection. Among 2212 men with serum prostate-specific antigen levels of >3.

RNA-binding proteins are emerging as critical modulators of oncogenic cell transformation, malignancy and therapy resistance. We have previously found that the RNA-binding protein Cold Shock Domain containing protein E1 (CSDE1) promotes invasion and metastasis of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer and also a highly heterogeneous disease in need of predictive biomarkers and druggable targets. Here, we design a monoclonal antibody useful for IHC in the clinical setting and use it to evaluate the prognosis potential of CSDE1 in an exploratory cohort of 149 whole tissue sections including benign nevi and primary tumors and metastasis from melanoma patients.

Research performed in Europe has driven cardiovascular device innovation. This includes, but is not limited to, percutaneous coronary intervention, cardiac imaging, transcatheter heart valve implantation, and device therapy of cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure. An important part of future medical progress involves the evolution of medical technology and the ongoing development of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Background: STW5 is an herbal medicinal product that, in previous studies, reduced abdominal pain in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The effect of STW5 on gas-related abdominal symptoms is unknown.
Aim: To determine the effects of STW5, compared to placebo, on the responses to colonic gas in IBS.

Cancer patients are at risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), its recurrence, but also at risk of bleeding while anticoagulated. In addition, cancer therapies have been associated to increased VTE risk. Guidelines for VTE treatment in cancer patients recommend low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) or direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) for the initial treatment, DOAC for VTE short-term treatment, and LMWH or DOAC for VTE long-term treatment.

Purpose: This study investigates the potential of inflammatory parameters (IP), symptoms, and patient-related outcome measurements as biomarkers of severity and their ability to predict tuberculosis (TB) evolution.
Methods: People with TB were included prospectively in the Stage-TB study conducted at five clinical sites in Barcelona (Spain) between April 2018 and December 2021. Data on demographics, epidemiology, clinical features, microbiology, and Sanit George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) and Kessler-10 as Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) were collected at three time points during treatment.

Heart failure (HF) is increasing at an alarming rate, primary due to the rising in aging, obesity and diabetes. Notably, individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) face a significantly elevated risk of HF, leading to more hospitalizations and increased case fatality rates. Several risk factors contribute to HF in T1D, including poor glycemic control, female gender, smoking, hypertension, elevated BMI, and albuminuria.

Purpose: To analyze the reduction in multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) demand and prostate biopsies after the hypothetical implementation of the Barcelona risk-stratified pathway (BCN-RSP) in a population of the clinically significant prostate cancer (csCaP) early detection program in Catalonia.
Materials And Methods: A retrospective comparation between the hypothetical application of the BCN-RSP and the current pathway, which relied on pre-biopsy mpMRI and targeted and/or systematic biopsies, was conducted. The BCN-RSP stratify men with suspected CaP based on a prostate specific antigen (PSA) level >10 ng/ml and a suspicious rectal examination (DRE), and the Barcelona-risk calculator 1 (BCN-RC1) to avoid mpMRI scans.

Objectives: To assess the effect of COVID-19 on the postacute risk of cardiovascular events (CVEs) among people with HIV (PWH).
Methods: Population-based matched cohort, including all PWH ≥16 years in the Catalan PISCIS HIV cohort. We estimated the incidence rate of the first CVE after COVID-19, analysed it a composite outcome (2020-2022).

Objective: The risk factors for seizure recurrence after acute symptomatic seizure due to a structural brain lesion are not well established. The aim of this study was to analyze possible associations between demographic, clinical, and electroencephalographic variables and epilepsy development in patients with acute symptomatic seizure due to an acute structural brain lesion.
Methods: We designed an observational prospective study of patients with acute symptomatic seizure due to an acute structural brain lesion (hemorrhagic stroke, ischemic stroke, traumatic brain injury, or meningoencephalitis) who underwent EEG during their initial admission between January 2015 and January 2020.

Background: The learning process in clinical placements for health care students is a multifaceted endeavor that engages numerous actors and stakeholders, including students, clinical tutors, link teachers, and academic assessors. Successfully navigating this complex process requires the implementation of tasks and mentorships that are synchronized with educational and clinical processes, seamlessly embedded within their respective contexts. Given the escalating number of students and the rising demand for health care services from the general population, it becomes imperative to develop additional tools that support the learning process.
