Evaluating Osteoporosis in Chronic Kidney Disease: Both Bone Quantity and Quality Matter.

J Clin Med

February 2024

Nephrology Department, University Hospital Germans Trias I Pujol, REMAR-IGTP Group, Research Institute Germans Trias I Pujol (IGTP), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 08193 Badalona, Spain.

Bone strength is determined not only by bone quantity [bone mineral density (BMD)] but also by bone quality, including matrix composition, collagen fiber arrangement, microarchitecture, geometry, mineralization, and bone turnover, among others. These aspects influence elasticity, the load-bearing and repair capacity of bone, and microcrack propagation and are thus key to fractures and their avoidance. In chronic kidney disease (CKD)-associated osteoporosis, factors traditionally associated with a lower bone mass (advanced age or hypogonadism) often coexist with non-traditional factors specific to CKD (uremic toxins or renal osteodystrophy, among others), which will have an impact on bone quality.

RNA-binding proteins are emerging as critical modulators of oncogenic cell transformation, malignancy and therapy resistance. We have previously found that the RNA-binding protein Cold Shock Domain containing protein E1 (CSDE1) promotes invasion and metastasis of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer and also a highly heterogeneous disease in need of predictive biomarkers and druggable targets. Here, we design a monoclonal antibody useful for IHC in the clinical setting and use it to evaluate the prognosis potential of CSDE1 in an exploratory cohort of 149 whole tissue sections including benign nevi and primary tumors and metastasis from melanoma patients.

J Immunol Methods

April 2024

Functional Cytomics Lab, Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP), ICO-Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Badalona (Barcelona), Spain. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates a new volumetric counting method for CD34+ cells in blood samples, which aims to improve accuracy over traditional methods that use reference microbeads.
  • The issue with the "vanishing counting bead phenomenon" affects the reliability of results obtained with bead-based systems but has been addressed through the development of a true volumetric counting system.
  • Results showed no significant difference in CD34+ cell counts between volumetric and non-volumetric methods, suggesting that the new volumetric technique could simplify sample preparation and reduce analysis bias.

Cancer patients are at risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), its recurrence, but also at risk of bleeding while anticoagulated. In addition, cancer therapies have been associated to increased VTE risk. Guidelines for VTE treatment in cancer patients recommend low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) or direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) for the initial treatment, DOAC for VTE short-term treatment, and LMWH or DOAC for VTE long-term treatment.
