Comparison of creatinine-based equations for estimating glomerular filtration rate in deceased donor renal transplant recipients.

Background: Estimating glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is important for clinical management in kidney transplantation recipients (KTR). However, very few studies have evaluated the performance of the new GFR estimating equations (Lund-Malmö Revised-LMR, and Full Age Spectrum-FAS) in KTR.

Methods: GFR was estimated (eGFR) using CKD-EPI, MDRD, LMR, and FAS equations and compared to GFR measurement (mGFR) by reference methods (inuline urinary and iohexol plasma clearance) in 395 deceased-donor KTR without corticosteroids.

Tracing back hepatitis B virus genotype D introduction and dissemination in South Brazil.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is widespread and it is considered a major health problem in the world. HBV is classified into genotypes and subgenotypes. HBV genotype D (HBV-D) has been detected worldwide with high prevalence in some specific regions from Europe and South America.

The HLA-G 14-bp insertion/deletion polymorphism is associated with chronic hepatitis B in Southern Brazil: A case-control study.

There is growing evidence that the non-classical HLA-G has a role in the process of the immune response against pathogens, including HBV and HIV. Previous studies demonstrated that a 14-bp insertion/deletion (indel) polymorphism at 3'-untranslated region of HLA-G gene interferes in the mRNA stability and expression. The present study aimed to evaluate the association of the 14-bp indel polymorphism (rs371194629) with HBV infection in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) mono-infected and HBV/HIV co-infected patients from Southern Brazil.

Collaborative Brazilian pediatric renal transplant registry (CoBrazPed-RTx): A report from 2004 to 2018.

The Brazilian collaborative registry for pediatric renal transplantation began in 2004 as a multicenter initiative aimed at analyzing, reporting, and disseminating the results of pediatric renal transplantation in Brazil. Data from all pediatric renal transplants performed from January 2004 to May 2018 at the 13 participating centers were analyzed. A total of 2744 pediatric renal transplants were performed in the thirteen participating centers.

Objective: To determine the performance of plasma-creatinine-based equations Chronic Kidney Disease-Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI), Lund-Malmö Revised, (LMR), full age spectrum (FAS), and Berlin Initiative Study (BIS) 1 in older adults across a broad spectrum of GFRs.

Ectopia Cordis Associated with Pentalogy of Cantrell-A Case Report.

Pentalogy of Cantrell (PC) is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by changes in the mesodermal median structures and congenital heart disease, often with a poor prognosis. In 1958, Cantrell et al2 defined the full spectrum of the syndrome with the following anomalies: defects of the anterior diaphragm, of the lower part of the sternum, of the supraumbilical region and the abdominal wall, of the diaphragmatic pericardium, and various intracardiac congenital abnormalities. The present report describes a case of ectopia cordis associated with PC and the importance of the participation of a multidisciplinary team in the treatment of this condition.

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Approaches to Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Understanding the Barcelona Clínic Liver Cancer Protocol.

Each year, hepatocellular carcinoma is diagnosed in more than half a million people worldwide and it is the fifth most common cancer in men and the seventh most common cancer in women. This article reviews the Barcelona-Clínic Liver Cancer protocol for the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of this disease, and four cases are presented for the discussion of the therapeutic approach. Understanding the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to this disease is essential, especially if we keep in mind the quintessential basics of prevention and early detection.

Anatomic pulmonary resection by video-assisted thoracoscopy: the Brazilian experience (VATS Brazil study).

Objective: The objective of this study was to describe the results of anatomic pulmonary resections performed by video-assisted thoracoscopy in Brazil.

Methods: Thoracic surgeons (members of the Brazilian Society of Thoracic Surgery) were invited, via e-mail, to participate in the study. Eighteen surgeons participated in the project by providing us with retrospective databases containing information related to anatomic pulmonary resections performed by video-assisted thoracoscopy.

[Door-to-electrocardiogram (EKG) time: an indicator of efficacy in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction].

This investigation aimed to measure door-to-electrocardiogram (EKG) time in patients with acute myocardial infarction who were attended at the emergency room of a General Hospital. This is a cohort study which evaluated the time of arrival, EKG, nursing and thrombolytic care. Data were obtained from records from March to July of 2006.

Extralobar pulmonary sequestration with hemothorax secondary to pulmonary infarction.

Pulmonary sequestration is an uncommon condition that accounts for 0.5-6% of all pulmonary malformations and is typically diagnosed in childhood. Of the two forms of pulmonary sequestration, intralobar and extralobar, the latter is less frequently encountered.

[Risk factors associated with very low birth weight in a low-income population].

This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with very low birth weight in a general hospital in Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. This was a case-control study of 200 newborns with birth weight from 500 to 1,499 g (cases) and 400 with birth weight from 3,000 to 3,999 g (controls). Infants were from singleton pregnancies, and their mother had received prenatal care at public health services.

Isolated renal metastasis after colon cancer.

Renal infiltration of colon adenocarcinoma is a rare event. The authors present the case report of a 52-year-old female who had a high carcinoembryonic antigen level 18 months after right hemicolectomy and a chemotherapy regimen to treat transverse colon adenocarcinoma. The patient presented cancer recurrence after 12 months, and underwent a paraaortic lymphadenoctomy and a second adjuvant chemotherapy with the folfox regimen.

[Clonidine associated to morphine and midazolam in children submitted to mechanical ventilation: randomized, double blind and placebo controlled study].

Background And Objectives: In our country, the abstinence syndrome has high prevalence and besides the distress prolongs the length of hospital stay. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of associating oral clonidine to the intravenous morphine plus midazolam continuous infusion in children submitted to mechanical ventilation.

Methods: Randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study, conducted in the PICU at the Hospital Geral of Caxias do Sul.

Mounier-Kuhn syndrome.

Mounier-Kuhn syndrome, or tracheobronchomegaly, is a rare clinical entity characterized by abnormal dilation of the trachea and main bronchi. The diagnosis can usually be made by measuring the tracheal diameter. We report the case of a 40-year-old black man with refractory lower respiratory tract infection.

[Dermatological disease among HIV-infected patients with CD4-lymphocyte count].

Objective: To correlate the prevalence of dermatological diseases among HIV-infected patient with CD4-lymphocyte count.

Methods: A case series study was carried out in the region of Caxias do Sul, state of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Data was collected by reviewing the records of HIV-infected patients admitted to a public hospital (198 patients from March 1998 to June 2002) or seen at the university outpatient clinic (40 patients from March to June 2002).
