Partial or total perforation of the articular disc is mainly observed in the final stage of temporomandibular disorder. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of joint pathologies; MRI arthrography consists of the infiltration of a contrast medium into a joint, being Gadolinium chelates the most employed medium, however, possible harmful effects have been associated with its use. The aim of this work was to evaluate a case of perforation of the articular disc of the temporomandibular joint by MRI arthrography using physiological solution (NaCl 0.

Hyperplasia of the coronoid process is a rare alteration that is characterized by the exaggerated and progressive development of said process over periods of months or years, both in height and volume, which finally causes mandibular hypomobility. It is important to highlight the importance of imaging for the correct diagnosis and treatment of said entity, taking into consideration the great variety of differential diagnoses that can occur. In this sense, conventional radiographs constitute a basic and indispensable tool for approaching the diagnosis.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is defined by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) as the presence of an exposed bone area in the maxillofacial region, present for more than eight weeks in patients treated with the use of antiresorptive or antiangiogenic agents, with no history of radiation or metastatic disease. Bisphosphonates (BF) and denosumab (DS) are widely used in adults for the management of patients with cancer and osteoporosis, and recently there has been an increase in their use in child and young patients for the management of disorders such as osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS), malignant hypercalcemia, and others. There are differences between case reports in adults compared to child and young patients related to the use of antiresorptive/antiangiogenic drugs and the development of MRONJ.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Hospital General del Oeste "Dr. José Gregorio Hernández", Postgrado de Cirugía Bucal y Maxilofacial de la Universidad Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho, Caracas, Venezuela.

Arthroscopy is a diagnostic-therapeutic technique used in the treatment of disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The difficulties of arthroscopy lie in the manipulation of the tools, which is why training in the technique of triangulation in artificial models is essential. We developed a training system based on the techniques of arthroscopy in the TMJ, using simulators.

Expression of parathyroid hormone related protein (PTHRP) in ameloblastomas.

J Clin Exp Dent

February 2018

Oral Histopathology Laboratory, Universidad Central de Venezuela, Venezuela.

Background: Presence of parathyroid hormone related protein (PTHrP) might suggest that ameloblastomas recapitulate features of the enamel epithelium and induce bone resorption, which would facilitate their growth and local invasion. The aim of this study was to determine the expression of PTHrP in ameloblastomas.

Material And Methods: An observational research study was designed including 39 cases of histologically diagnosed ameloblastomas (39 out of 42 patients gave consent for the use of their medical records and all data required for this study).

Endoscopic therapy of pancreatic disease in children.

Gastrointest Endosc Clin N Am

January 1998

Gastroenterology Department, Hospital General del Oeste, MSAS, Los Magallanes de Catia, Caracas, Venezuela.

The advent of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) has revolutionized the approach to the diagnosis and management of pancreatic disorders in adults. In the past 5 years, endoscopic pancreatic therapy in children has moved from an investigational concept to a practical service provided by specialized centers. When performed by experienced endoscopists, therapeutic pancreatography can be successfully performed in a selected group of children with a low rate of complications.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in children.

Gastroenterologist

June 1996

Gastroenterology Department, Hospital General del Oeste, MSAS, Los Magallanes, Caracas, Venezuela.

In the past two decades, the possibility to visualize the biliary tree and the pancreatic duct using endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) has substantially influenced evaluation and treatment of adult patients with suspected pancreaticobiliary disease. Development of pediatric duodenoscopes, expansion of indications for the procedure in children, and availability of newly skilled pediatric endoscopists have resulted in an increasing number of these procedures being performed in children. Operative endoscopic procedures are also applicable to children and adolescents; techniques such as endoscopic sphincterotomy, biliary drainage, common bile duct stone and pancreatic duct stone extraction, implantation of endoprosthesis, and pancreatic pseudocyst drainage are beginning to be used in children, with an overall success rate similar to that seen in adult patients.
