Background: Malignant melanoma is a skin neoplasm that typically does not invade the breast, making its spread to the breast tissue in a male patient uncommon. When it metastasizes to the breast, it can present as a palpable mass or even be asymptomatic. Ultrasound allows for the detection of round hypoechoic lesions, while mammography detects well-defined nodules with increased density.

Background: Histoplasmosis is a systemic mycosis caused by the agent Histoplasma capsulatum. Its clinical manifestations depend on the inhaled fungal load and can vary from an asymptomatic infection (90%) to a disseminated disease, especially in HIV infections and a CD4 T lymphocyte count of less than 150 cells. Its initial symptoms are nonspecific, including fever, weight loss, dry cough, and chest pain.

Benign salivary gland tumors are a rare and diverse group of neoplasms with significant variations in their site of origin, histological features, and biological behavior. This report describes the case of a 93-year-old woman with a markedly enlarged left cervical mass. Physical inspection uncovered a tumor of approximately 32 x 30 cm, featuring necrotic and ulcerated areas.

Background: Breast cancer shows significant clinical, morphologic, and molecular variation. Telomeres are nucleoprotein complexes composed of hexanucleotide repeat DNA sequence, TTAGGG, and numerous telomere-associated proteins. The maintenance of telomere length is carried out by a ribonucleoprotein called telomerase, which consists of two main components: a catalytic subunit called hTERT (human telomerase reverse transcriptase) and an RNA template called hTR (human telomerase RNA).

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms may present without symptoms or with chronic pain in the right lower quadrant. This report describes a case of a 35-year-old woman who presented with chronic right lower quadrant pain and was found to have a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN). Physical examination revealed localized tenderness in the right lower quadrant with no additional symptoms.

Anaphylactic shock is the most severe form of an acute systemic allergic reaction and can be potentially lethal if left untreated. Here, we present the case of a 51-year-old male with no significant medical history, who arrived at our hospital's emergency trauma bay following a motor vehicle accident caused by a sudden onset of malaise while driving. Upon arrival, the patient's airway was patent, but he reported a sensation of a foreign body in his larynx.

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Unidad Medica de Alta Especialidad 71, Universidad Autonoma de Coahuila, Torreon, MEX.

Degloving injuries are caused by trauma with shear mechanisms, usually secondary to being run over in traffic accidents. It is characterized by the avulsion of skin and subcutaneous tissue, generating coverage deficit, and in severe cases, loss of the affected limb. Herein, we discuss a case of a six-year-old male run over by a truck, receiving a direct impact on the left lower extremity with a rubber tire.

A giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) presents as a rare neoplasm demanding a heightened index of suspicion for precise diagnostic evaluation, especially when manifesting in the digital phalanges, as it is part of a group of neoplasms known as tenosynovial giant cell tumors (TCGTs). An accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial, as it significantly enhances treatment outcomes for this heterogeneous group of lesions. We describe the case of a male patient who presented with multiple nodules in the fourth finger of his left hand and was ultimately diagnosed with a localized form of a GCTTS, an unusual presentation for localized forms of this entity.

Article Synopsis
  • Small-bowel diverticulosis is an uncommon condition, but this case involves a 46-year-old man who experienced severe abdominal pain caused by an ileal diverticulum.
  • Initial examination revealed tenderness and signs of peritonitis, leading to a CT scan that indicated an issue in the small bowel.
  • The surgical procedure started with laparoscopy but transitioned to a laparotomy for bowel resection and anastomosis after identifying a diverticulum measuring 4 cm by 2 cm, resulting in the patient's symptom relief post-surgery.

Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare genetic condition characterized by the sagittal inversion of thoracoabdominal organs. Surgeons may face substantial challenges when dealing with surgical pathologies in SIT patients, particularly those involving the gallbladder and bile ducts, such as cholelithiasis and acute cholecystitis. In this report, we present the case of a 46-year-old male with a previously known diagnosis of SIT, who presented with recurrent episodes of atypical abdominal pain.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is rarely diagnosed during pregnancy and its management represents a challenge as it necessitates considerations for the well-being of both the mother and the developing fetus. Diagnosis can be challenging and is often an incidental finding during routine imaging, which can lead to difficult decision-making. The choice of the ideal imaging study in these cases is a matter of debate.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a heterogeneous condition characterized by changes in behavior, personality, and language resulting from degeneration of the frontal and/or temporal lobes. A wide spectrum of clinical syndromes and an overlap with different motor disorders make this entity challenging for clinicians, both in achieving a correct diagnosis and providing proper treatment. Despite the majority of cases being sporadic, FTD has a hereditary component, and more than 10 disease-causing genes have been identified.

Background Zika, dengue and chikungunya viruses (ZIKV, CHIKV and DENV) are temporally associated with neurological diseases, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Because these three arboviruses coexist in Mexico, the frequency and severity of GBS could theoretically increase. This study aims to determine the association between these arboviruses and GBS in a Mexican population and to establish the clinical characteristics of the patients, including the severity of the infection.
