Gonadal steroids exert different effects on the central nervous system (CNS), such as preserving neuronal function and promoting neuronal survival. Estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone reduce neuronal loss in the CNS in animal models of neurodegeneration. However, hormone replacement therapy has been associated with higher rates of endometrial, prostate, and breast cancer.

is a widely distributed dermatophyte, which is among the main etiological agents of dermatophytosis in humans and domestic animals. This fungus invades, colonizes and nourishes itself on the keratinized tissues of the host through various virulence factors. This review will bring together the known information about the mechanisms, enzymes and their associated genes relevant to the pathogenesis processes of the fungus and will provide an overview of those virulence factors that should be better studied to establish effective methods of prevention and control of the disease.

Article Synopsis
  • A 13-year-old girl exhibited symptoms of a non-toxic multinodular goiter and developed an ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor, alongside a pineal parenchymal tumor.
  • Next-generation sequencing identified a new pathogenic variant in the DICER1 gene, specifically a germline mutation (exon 16, c2488del [pGlu830Serfs*2]).
  • This case highlights that mutations in the DICER1 gene can lead to a genetic predisposition for various types of tumors, ranging from benign to malignant, throughout a person's life.

Sección de Estudios de Posgrado e Investigación, Escuela Superior de Medicina, Instituto Politécnico Nacional, Plan de San Luis y Díaz Mirón, Ciudad de México 11340, Mexico.

Article Synopsis
  • Malnutrition is a serious public health issue in developing countries, particularly impacting children and increasing the risk of infections like oral candidiasis, with limited data on Candida presence in asymptomatic Mexican children.
  • A study of 743 preschool children in Mexico found varying nutritional statuses, with normal being the most common, while Candida spp. were isolated from 52 individuals, predominantly C. albicans.
  • Although there was no significant link between Candida colonization and nutritional status, a higher colonization rate was associated with increased intake of simple carbohydrates, especially among six-year-old boys.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) contributes to the spread of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus type 2, and neurodegenerative diseases. Evaluation of sex- and hormone-dependent changes in body weight, blood pressure, blood lipids, oxidative stress markers, and alterations in different types of memory in Sprague-Dawley rats fed with a high fat and high fructose (HFHF) diet were evaluated. After 12 weeks of feeding the male and female rats with HFHF, body weight gain, increase in blood pressure, and generation of dyslipidemia compared to the animals fed with chow diet were observed.

September 2020

Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Hospital General de Zona No. 197, Servicio de Medicina Interna. Texcoco, Estado de México, México.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the cause of the respiratory disease called COVID-19 and of the state of global health emergency. Currently, there is no specific treatment or sufficient scientific information to generate consensus or unique international guidelines on how to treat COVID-19. It is suggested that adapting the actions of evaluation, monitoring and treatment of patients with COVID-19, focused on the knowledge of the pathophysiology of the disease and on the known risk factors, could improve the presentation of adverse outcomes in patients.

Unidad de Investigación Médica en Farmacología, Hospital de Especialidades, Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Mexico City, Mexico.

Estrogen receptor modulators are compounds of interest because of their estrogenic agonistic/antagonistic effects and tissue specificity. These compounds have many clinical applications, particularly for breast cancer treatment and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, as well as for the treatment of climacteric symptoms. Similar to estrogens, neuroprotective effects of estrogen receptor modulators have been described in different models.
