After emergency authorization, different COVID-19 vaccines were administered across Mexico in 2021, including mRNA, viral vector, and inactivated platform vaccines. In the state of Baja-California, 3,516,394 doses were administered, and 2285 adverse events (AE) were registered in the epidemiological surveillance system in 2021. Incidence rates per 100,000 doses were calculated for total, mild (local and systemic), and severe AE for each vaccine.

Several studies have identified main changes in T- and B-lymphocyte subsets during chronic HIV infection, but few data exist on how these subsets behave during the initial phase of HIV infection. We enrolled 22 HIV-infected patients during the acute stage of infection before the initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART). Patients had blood samples drawn previous to ART initiation (T0), and at 2 (T1) and 12 (T2) months after ART initiation.

Importance: Pediatric early warning systems (PEWS) aid with early identification of clinical deterioration and improve outcomes in children with cancer hospitalized in resource-limited settings; however, there may be barriers to implementation.
Objective: To evaluate stakeholder-reported barriers and enablers to PEWS implementation in resource-limited hospitals.
Design, Setting, And Participants: In this qualitative study, semistructured stakeholder interviews were conducted at 5 resource-limited pediatric oncology centers in 4 countries in Latin America.
Malnutrition can affect the patient diagnosed with, and treated for, cancer. However, until a dedicated study is completed, estimates of malnutrition rates will be disparate and unrepresentative of cancer patients' nutritional reality. : To estimate the prevalence of malnutrition among patients being cared for cancer in Latin American (LATAM) hospitals by means of a multicenter, multinational study.

Since 1948, the World Health Organization has been publishing the (ICD), a coded system of causes of disease and death with an in-depth revision every 10-15 years. In its latest revision, the ICD-11 uses nomenclature characterizing old age as "initial and final geriatric periods," implying the medicalization of this stage of life, which has created confusion and sparked controversy. This article discusses the new nomenclature proposed, given the current knowledge about old age and the aging process and its most accepted definition.

The parasite , the causal agent of amebiasis, is considered a worldwide emergent disease and still represents an important cause of death in Mexico. Here, we describe a clinical case, involving an inflammatory response to both Coronavirus Infectious Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and intestinal amebiasis 54-year-old, COVID-positive Mexican gentleman was admitted to surgery following 6 days of hematochezia. An exploratory laparotomy and colonoscopy revealed multiple fibrous and amebic ulcerations (5-10 cm in diameter), with necrotic tissue predominantly localized in the sigmoid, descending and ascending colon.

Purpose: Time to antibiotic administration (TTA) is a commonly used standard of care in pediatric cancer settings in high-income countries. Effective interventions to improve outcomes in cancer patients with febrile neutropenia (FN) often address timely and appropriate antibiotic administration. We assessed the effectiveness of a locally adapted multimodal strategy in decreasing TTA in a resource-constrained pediatric cancer center in Mexico.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends countries introduce new anti-TB drugs in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. The aim of the study is to prospectively evaluate the effectiveness of bedaquiline (and/or delamanid)- containing regimens in a large cohort of consecutive TB patients treated globally. This observational, prospective study is based on data collected and provided by Global Tuberculosis Network (GTN) centres and analysed twice a year.

Rationale: The gap between the nutrition education provided to medical students and the nutrition competences and attitudes needed for doctors to provide effective nutrition care is a global concern. The goal of this study was to investigate the curricular content on nutrition education in Latin American medical schools and to evaluate the self-perceived knowledge, attitudes, and barriers to nutrition practice of final-year medical students.
Methods: Eighty-five public and private medical schools from 17 Latin American countries were invited to participate in the study.

Background: Hospitalized pediatric hematology-oncology (PHO) patients have frequent clinical deterioration events (CDE) requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission, particularly in resource-limited settings. The objective of this study was to describe CDEs in hospitalized PHO patients in Latin America and to identify event-level and center-level risk factors for mortality.
Methods: In 2017, the authors implemented a prospective registry of CDEs, defined as unplanned transfers to a higher level of care, use of ICU-level interventions on the floor, or nonpalliative floor deaths, in 16 PHO centers in 10 countries.

Purpose: Treatment of children with CNS tumors (CNSTs) demands a complex, interdisciplinary approach that is rarely available in low- and middle-income countries. We established the Cross-Border Neuro-Oncology Program (CBNP) between Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego (RCHSD), and Hospital General, Tijuana (HGT), Mexico, to provide access to neuro-oncology care, including neurosurgic services, for children with CNSTs diagnosed at HGT. Our purpose was to assess the feasibility of the CBNP across the United States-Mexico border and improve survival for children with CNSTs at HGT by implementing the CBNP.

Background: Evolutionary analyses of well-annotated human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) sequence data can provide insights into viral transmission patterns and associated factors. Here, we explored the transmission dynamics of the HIV-1 subtype B epidemic across the San Diego (US) and Tijuana (Mexico) border region to identify factors that could help guide public health policy.
Methods: HIV pol sequences were collected from people with HIV in San Diego County and Tijuana between 1996-2018.

To date, the impact, timeline and duration of COVID-19 pandemic remains unknown and more than ever it is necessary to provide safe pathways for cancer patients. Multiple triage systems for nonemergent surgical procedures have been published, but potentially curative cancer procedures are essential surgery rather than elective surgery. In the present and future scenario of our country, thoracic oncology teams may have the difficult decision of weighing the utility of surgical intervention against the risk for inadvertent COVID-19 exposure for patients and medical staff.

Secondary lymphohistiocytosis is a severe inflammatory condition characterized by uncontrolled inflammatory response hyperactivation of antigen-presenting cells, hemophagocytosis, cytopenias, and multiorgan failure, and is secondary to subjacent pathologies such as cancer, infection, or immune disease. Standard treatment includes chemotherapy; however, this is not always possible or safe. Ruxolitinib, a Janus kinase (JAK) 1/2 inhibitor can reduce inflammation and cytokine activity and has been used in refractory cases and first-line treatment.
