Article Synopsis
  • Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is a type of bacteria normally found in the mouth that can lead to dental issues and, in rare cases, serious systemic diseases.
  • A case is detailed where a healthy patient developed a severe illness due to this bacteria, which affected their lungs and created a connection to the chest wall (fistula).
  • Diagnosing this infection was particularly challenging because the bacteria are hard to isolate in lab tests, making it tough to identify the exact cause of the patient's condition.

Sepsis is a global health problem; progression to septic shock is associated with a marked increase in morbidity and mortality. In this setting, increased plasma lactate levels demonstrated to be an indicator of severity and a predictor of mortality, and are usually interpreted almost exclusively as a marker of low tissue perfusion. However, a recent paradigm shift has occurred in the exegesis of lactate metabolism and its biological properties.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease which most commonly compromises the respiratory system, whereas abdominal involvement is rare, thus its diagnosis is a challenge. The clinical manifestations of abdominal tuberculosis as well as its physical examination findings are usually non-specific and, frequently, similar to those of other diseases, so it is critical to consider abdominal tuberculosis among the differential diagnoses. Here we report the clinical case of a 15-year-old male patient hospitalized for a prolonged febrile syndrome associated with abdominal pain, diarrhea, night sweats, and weight loss.
