In the chronic phase of Chagas disease (CCD), diagnosis relies on detecting specific IgG antibodies due to the low or absent presence of the parasite in human blood. However, the performance of current serological tests is highly variable, lacking a "" assay with 100% sensitivity and specificity, which challenges the exploration of new biomarkers. In the present study, we evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of an optimized ELISA using the predicted immunogenic domains (called TcD3 and TcD6) of Tc323, a protein highly conserved among strains but absent in other clinically significant parasites such as .

Background: During the last decade, the demand for top surgery in female-to-male transgender (FMT) has increased worldwide. This study aims to present our initial experience with the novel use of ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) in top surgery. Additionally, we evaluate the satisfaction and quality of life with TRANS-Q and BREAST-Q.

Background: There is limited evidence from antimicrobial stewardship programmes in less-resourced settings. This study aimed to improve the quality of antibacterial prescriptions by mitigating overuse and promoting the use of narrow-spectrum agents in intensive care units (ICUs) in a middle-income country.
Methods: We established a quality improvement collaborative (QIC) model involving nine Argentine ICUs over 11 months with a 16-week baseline period (BP) and a 32-week implementation period (IP).

Background: The demand for healthcare services during the COVID-19 pandemic was excessive for less-resourced settings, with intensive care units (ICUs) taking the heaviest toll.
Objective: The aim was to achieve adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) use in 90% of patient encounters, to reach 90% compliance with objectives of patient flow (OPF) and to provide emotional support tools to 90% of healthcare workers (HCWs).
Methods: We conducted a quasi-experimental study with an interrupted time-series design in 14 ICUs in Argentina.

Introduction: Lid-parallel conjunctival folds (LIPCOF) and conjunctivochalasis (CCH) are similar conditions that seem to be related to dry eye severity. In addition, there is a lack of studies on the topic of LIPCOF and CCH on dry eye symptoms in non-contact lens and contact lens (CL) wearers. Therefore, the aim of this study is to review the relationship of LIPCOF and CCH with dry eye symptoms in non-CL and CL wearers, as well as to report the treatment of dry eye disease (DED) in non-CL and CL wearers who present LIPCOF or CCH.

We present the case of a healthy young woman who consulted for left peripheral facial palsy associated with fever, dry cough, dyspnea, and asthenia of two weeks' evolution. Physical examination revealed hypoesthesia in left T6 to T12 dermatomes and bilateral galactorrhea. In the laboratory, she presented negative viral serology, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, antinuclear antibody titers, prolactin and thyroid-stimulating hormone, with positive antiperoxidase antibodies.

Background: Complete resection of an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is considered a curative treatment. In this paper the authors discuss two possibilities in the event of hemorrhage after satisfactory resection of an AVM: recurrence or remnant.
Observations: A 33-year-old female patient was diagnosed with an incidental right frontal AVM that was microsurgically resected and whose postoperative angiography showed no remnant.

Unlabelled: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases the risks of maternal, placental, and neonatal complications. Previously, we found that a diet enriched in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) prevents increased maternal triglyceridemia and placental proinflammatory markers in a cohort of GDM patients. The aim of this work was to evaluate maternal circulating markers of insulin resistance, placental collagen, glycogen and lipid levels, and placental levels of proteins, mRNAs, and a microRNA involved in the endocytic pathway in the same cohort of control women and women with GDM who received or did not receive a diet enriched in EVOO (36 g/day) from weeks 24 to 28 of pregnancy until term.

Heart failure (HF) is a major clinical and public health problem associated with significant mortality, morbidity, and health-care costs. Despite the existence of evidence-based guidelines for the optimal treatment of HF, the quality of care remains suboptimal. Our aim was to increase the use a care bundle in 50% of enrolled subjects during their hospitalization and discharge and to reduce their readmission for HF causes by 10%.

We present the case of a 40-year-old man, HIV positive with regular adherence to treatment, who consulted for intermittent febrile episodes during a two-years period, progressive diffuse abdominal pain and painless generalized lymphadenopathy in the last two months. Laboratory analysis showed pancytopenia, altered coagulation tests, hypoalbuminemia, and increased acute phase reactants. Computed tomography (CT) of the chest, abdomen and pelvis revealed hepato-splenomegaly and generalized lymphadenopathy.

We present the case of a 38-year-old woman with no relevant medical history, resident of the City of Buenos Aires, who was admitted in hospital for presenting fever, retroocular headache, myalgia, arthralgia, and maculopapular pruritic rash on the back of the hands and feet of 6 days of evolution. Laboratory tests revealed lymphopenia, severe thrombocytopenia, and anicteric hepatitis. Her husband had been hospitalized three weeks earlier for a condition of similar characteristics without etiological diagnosis.

T cells are central to the adaptive immune response against Trypanosoma cruzi infection. In chronic Chagas disease (CCD), circulating parasite-specific memory T cells show reduced functionality and increased expression of inhibitory receptors as a result of persistent antigenic stimulation. This phenotype has been linked to progression of cardiac pathology, whereas the presence of polyfunctional T cells shows association with therapeutic success.

Background: COVID-19 is associated with acute respiratory distress and cytokine release syndrome. The Janus kinase (JAK)1/JAK2 inhibitor ruxolitinib reduces inflammatory cytokine concentrations in disorders characterised by cytokine dysregulation, including graft-versus-host disease, myelofibrosis, and secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. We assessed whether treatment with the JAK1/JAK2 inhibitor ruxolitinib would be beneficial in patients with COVID-19 admitted to hospital.

The clinical evolution of patients with chronic Chagas disease (CCD) is mainly associated with an excessive inflammation and a defective immunomodulatory profile caused by the interaction between and the host. Regulatory B (Breg) cells exert immune suppression mostly through IL-10 production (B10 cells), but also through IL-10-independent mechanisms. Previously, we demonstrated that CCD patients with cardiomyopathy show changes in the Breg cell phenotypic distribution although maintain IL-10 production capacity.

T cell-mediated immune response plays a crucial role in controlling infection and parasite burden, but it is also involved in the clinical onset and progression of chronic Chagas' disease. Therefore, the study of T cells is central to the understanding of the immune response against the parasite and its implications for the infected organism. The complexity of the parasite-host interactions hampers the identification and characterization of T cell-activating epitopes.
