Introduction: Paragangliomas are infrequent neuroendocrine tumours whose only criterion for malignancy is presence of metastases; thus, all paragangliomas show malignant potential. Actually, different risk factors have been analyzed to predict metastases but they remain unclear.

Purpose: To analyze clinical, histological, and genetic factors to predict the occurrence of metastasis.

The optimal strategy for early surveillance after first complete response is unclear in Hodgkin lymphoma. Thus, we compared the various follow-up strategies in a multicenter study. All the included patients had a negative positron emission tomography/computed tomography at the end of induction therapy.

Procalcitonin (PCT) and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) are acute-phase reactants that indicate the presence and severity of an infection. The aim of this study was to verify the utility of CRP and PCT as tools for early diagnosis of anastomotic leakage (AL) in patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery. A prospective observational study including 95 patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery with anastomosis, where patients were divided into two groups according to whether or not AL happened.

Objective: To describe how the ENT and Head and Neck departments of the HMM and HVC hospitals were managed during the COVID-19 state of alert and to analyse the results obtained to assess the usefulness of telephone consultations in our specialty.

Material And Methods: From March 16, the ENT and Head and Neck departments of the HMM and HVC Hospitals began telephone consultations. Due to the disparity in the actions of the different department members, the decision was made to create a protocol to manage these consultations which started to be implemented March 23.

Prognostic value of thrombin generation parameters in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Sci Rep

April 2021

Servicio de Hematología y Oncología Médica, Hospital General Universitario Morales Meseguer, Centro Regional de Hemodonación, Universidad de Murcia, IMIB-Arrixaca, CIBERER, Avda. Marqués de Los Vélez, s/n, 30008, Murcia, Spain.

SARS-CoV-2 infection increases the risk of thrombosis by different mechanisms not fully characterized. Although still debated, an increase in D-dimer has been proposed as a first-line hemostasis test associated with thromboembolic risk and unfavorable prognosis. We aim to systematically and comprehensively evaluate the association between thrombin generation parameters and the inflammatory and hypercoagulable state, as well as their prognostic value in COVID-19 patients.

Background: Several scores were available for predicting atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence post radiofrequency ablation. However, the role of different scores predicting AF recurrence after ablation in patients with concurrent AF and pulmonary diseases (PDs) remained obscure. Herein, we aimed to investigate their predicting values and differences in patients with concurrent AF and PDs.

Gut Microbiota and the Quality of Oral Anticoagulation in Vitamin K Antagonists Users: A Review of Potential Implications.

J Clin Med

February 2021

Department of Cardiology, Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca, University of Murcia, Instituto Murciano de Investigación Biosanitaria (IMIB-Arrixaca), CIBERCV, 30120 Murcia, Spain.

The efficacy and safety of vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) as oral anticoagulants (OACs) depend on the quality of anticoagulation control, as reflected by the mean time in therapeutic range (TTR). Several factors may be involved in poor TTR such as comorbidities, high inter-individual variability, interacting drugs, and non-adherence. Recent studies suggest that gut microbiota (GM) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases, but the effect of the GM on anticoagulation control with VKAs is unknown.

Health impact of acute intermittent porphyria in latent and non-recurrent attacks patients.

Orphanet J Rare Dis

February 2021

Instituto Murciano de Investigación Biosanitaria Virgen de la Arrixaca (IMIB-Arrixaca), Murcia, Spain.

Background: Acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) is a genetic disease characterized by acute neurovisceral attacks. Long-term clinical conditions, chronic symptoms and impaired health related quality of life (HRQoL) have been reported during non-attack periods but mainly in patients with recurrent attacks. Our aim was to investigate these aspects in sporadic AIP (SA-AIP) and latent AIP (L-AIP) patients.

Bibliometric indicators have been devised to quantify scientific production and to try to evaluate its impact in the community. In general, bibliometric indicators can be classified according to whether the unit of analysis is the author (individual or group) or journal. The most widely used indicators for authors are those that measure an individual author's production, such as the Crown index or the h-index and its derivatives (e-index, h5-index, and the absolute or Ab-index, among others).

The measurement of circulating tumour markers (TMs) for the diagnosis or monitoring of breast cancer has sometimes been considered of limited utility. In addition to the overinterpretation of irrelevant changes in marker levels, the characteristics of the patient, the disease or other pathologies that can modify them are often not considered in their evaluation. On the other hand, there are recent data on the relationship of TMs with molecular subtypes and on their prognostic value, the knowledge of which may improve their clinical utility.

The pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has posed an unprecedented challenge to health systems, leading in many countries to the collapse of health care and a lack of preventive measures both for the most vulnerable sections of the population and among healthcare professionals.

The year 2020 will be remembered for the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which has been the greatest ever healthcare crisis for the National Health Service. In Spain there have been more than 1,556,730 cases and 42,619 deaths, as well as 20,268 elderly people who have died in nursing homes and 63,000 healthcare professionals infected (as of November 2020).

Background: Our objectives were to evaluate the risk of adverse events in a 'real-world' vs 'clinical trial' cohort of atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Methods: We studied patient-level data for vitamin K antagonist-treated AF patients with a creatinine clearance <60 mL/min from the Murcia AF Project and AMADEUS trial. The study end-points were ischaemic stroke, major bleeding, all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction and intracranial haemorrhage.

Introduction And Objectives: Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) has been shown to reduce the rate of endotracheal intubation and mortality in patients with acute heart failure (AHF). However, patients with AHF secondary to acute coronary syndrome/acute myocardial infarction (ACS-AMI) have been excluded from many clinical trials. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of NIV between patients with AHF triggered by ACS-AMI and by other etiologies.

Background: This study evaluated efficacy and safety of palbociclib, a CDK4/6 inhibitor, in heavily-pretreated hormone receptor-positive and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HR/HER2) metastatic breast cancer (mBC) patients during the compassionate use program in Spain from February 2015 to November 2017.

Patients And Methods: Patient data were collected retrospectively from 35 hospitals in Spain. Patients with HR/HER2 mBC who had progressed on ≥4 treatments for advanced disease were eligible.

Department of Cardiology, Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca, University of Murcia, Instituto Murciano de Investigación Biosanitaria, Murcia, Spain.

Objective: To test the hypothesis that particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10 μm (PM) and temperature are associated with an increased risk of adverse clinical outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) taking vitamin K antagonists (VKAs).

Patients And Methods: We included patients with AF whose condition was stable while taking VKAs (international normalized ratio, 2.0 to 3.
