Objective: To investigate whether treatment with abetimus delays renal flare in patients with lupus nephritis. Secondary objectives included evaluation of the effect of abetimus on C3 levels, anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) antibody levels, use of high-dose corticosteroids and/or cyclophosphamide, and major systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) flare.

Methods: We conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled study of treatment with abetimus at 100 mg/week for up to 22 months in SLE patients.

Neuroendoscopy has never been used for diagnosis-making and removal of large parenchymal viable parasites associated with severe mass effect. Satisfactory and complication-free removal of the parenchymal cysticerci was achieved after neuroendoscopical diagnosis in a patient with parenchymal parasites, with immediate remission of clinical alterations related to raised intracranial pressure.

Objectives: To assess whether neuroendoscopy is an improved and effective diagnostic as well as therapeutic tool in the emergency setting compared with neuroimaging studies.

Patients And Methods: Sixty-two preoperative computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) scans from 55 adult patients admitted in the emergency ward were compared with equal number of neuroendoscopy observations by independent observers, who included cases of raised intracranial pressure related to hydrocephalus, shunt dysfunction, intracranial cysts, brain tumours, subdural effusions, etc.

Results: According to the results obtained, three groups were formed.

Introduction: Laboratory tests have an important role in rheumatology for evaluation, diagnosis and follow up in several diseases. Specialized tests such as antinuclear antibodies (ANA), anti single or double stranded DNA antibodies (anti DNA) and anticardiolipin antibodies (AcACL) are frequently used and its diagnostic performance is well known in tertiary care centers. Our setting is a secondary care center that implemented these tests two years ago.

The safety and efficacy of abetimus sodium (abetimus) has been evaluated in 13 controlled and uncontrolled clinical trials involving > 800 patients or subjects. The two pivotal trials enrolled a total of 547 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who had a history of lupus nephritis. Evidence of clinical effectiveness of abetimus comes from analyses of data from patients with SLE and high-affinity antibodies to the DNA epitope of abetimus at baseline; a retrospective subgroup in the pivotal Phase II/III LJP-394-90-05 trial (90-05 trial) and the intent-to-treat population in the Phase III LJP-394-90-09 trial (90-09 trial).

Minimally invasive electrodiagnostic monitoring in epilepsy surgery.

Br J Neurosurg

October 2002

Department of Neurosurgery, Hospital General Dr Miguel Silva, Morelia, Michoachán, México.

A new method of obtaining electrographic recordings from endoscopically-based intraventricular monitoring was performed in three patients with intractable epilepsy, who subsequently underwent open resective neurosurgery. As a minimally invasive procedure, it was associated with no peri-operative complications, and electrical intraoperative monitoring of the epileptogenic focus yielded excellent results.

Treatment with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors is frequently associated with persistent dry cough. This side effect is thought to be due to the non-specific action of ACE inhibitors, which, in addition to suppressing the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), leads to the accumulation of kinins, encephalins and other biologically active peptides. Candesartan cilexetil is a new, long-acting angiotensin II type 1 (AT 1 ) receptor blocker, which offers a more specific means of suppressing the RAS than can be achieved with ACE inhibitors.

To determine the effects of a vegetarian diet with avocado as a source of monounsaturated fat on serum lipids, thirteen patients with phenotype II (twelve with IIa and one with IIb) dyslipidemia were included in a prospective, transversal and comparative study in which three four-week diets randomly assigned were assessed. One vegetarian diet (ALVD) was composed of 70% carbohydrates, 10% proteins and 20% lipids. Another was composed of 60% carbohydrates, 10% proteins and 30% lipids, 75% of which was supplied by avocado (AVD).

To examine the effects of avocado on plasma lipid concentrations a two-diet trial involving 8 phenotype IV and 8 phenotype II dyslipidemia patients was carried out. A diet rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (DRCA) using the avocado as their major source (30% of the total calories were consumed as fat, 75% of the total fat from the avocado), with restriction of saturated fat and less of 300 mg of cholesterol per day was evaluated. Patients also were in a low-saturated fat diet without avocado (DRSA).

In previous papers it was reported that rapeseed could prevent the development of cirrhosis induced by carbon tetrachloride and at the same time can induce liver regeneration in the rat. In such experiments rapeseed was always obtained from the same distributor "Semillas Berentsen". When reseed of different distributors was used, neither cirrhosis prevention or liver regeneration was observed.

Congenital absence of the vagina depends on partial or complete failure of Müllerian duct development. The ovaries develop normally and the fimbrial ends of the tubes are vestigial but there is no uterus, cervix or vagina. The urinary and genital systems and some skeletal portions developing from Müllerian ducts are so closely linked embryologically that congenital abnormality of kidney and bones is said to accompany genital defects in approximately 20% of cases.

A previous study suggested that a rapeseed diet induced hepatocellular hypertrophy in normal albino rats. In the present study morphometry confirmed that a rapeseed diet produces hepatocytic hypertrophy which, according to cytological findings, is primarily due to an increase in the cytoplasmic area. A combination of a rapeseed diet and the administration of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) also led to hepatocellular hypertrophy but the histological picture of the cirrhosis was similar to the one in control animals receiving CCl4 alone.

Septic shock in obstetrics is a major cause of mortality. Postpartum endometritis is often the first step of bacterial colonization inside the uterus which becomes the nidus of infection. Rapid spread into general circulation is favoured by hemodynamics patterns of pregnancy.
