Background: Current treatment for chronic kidney disease (CKD) focuses on improving manifestations and delaying progression. Nutritional approaches play a crucial role in CKD management, and various supplements have become available. Ketoanalogues of amino acids (KAs), calcium citrate, and inulin have been proposed as suitable supplements, yet their widespread use has been limited due to insufficient evidence.

Predictors of first hospitalization due to disease activity and infections in systemic lupus erythematosus patients.

Lupus

November 2024

Centro Regional de Enfermedades Autoinmunes y Reumáticas (GO-CREAR), Instituto Cardiovascular de Rosario, Rosario, Argentina.

Objectives: To identify the predictive factors of first hospitalization and associated variables to the main causes of hospitalizations in lupus patients from a Latin American cohort.

Methods: The first hospitalization after entry into the cohort during these patients' follow-up due to either lupus disease activity and/or infection was examined. Clinical and therapeutic variables were those occurring prior to the first hospitalization.

To compare the demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics, disease onset, and clinical features of radiographic axial Spondyloarthritis (r-axSpA) and non-radiographic axial Spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA) patients. All patients who attended outpatient spondylarthritis (SpA) clinics at Hospital General de Mexico and the Instituto Nacional de la Nutrición from 1998 to 2005 and met the rheumatologist diagnostic criteria for SpA were selected. Then the SpA patients were classified by European Spondyloarthropathy Study Group criteria (ESSG).

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a noninvasive approach to studying the autonomic modulation of heart rate in experimental settings, such as active standing sympathetic stimulation. It is known that patients with end-stage renal disease during active standing have few changes in HRV dynamics, which are improved after hemodialysis. However, it is unknown whether the response to active standing is recovered after definitive treatment with kidney transplantation.

Assessment of enthesopathy in conventional pelvis radiography: Another tool for spondyloarthritis diagnosis beyond sacroiliitis.

Semin Arthritis Rheum

August 2024

Spondyloarthritis Study group (GESPA), Universidad de La Sabana, Chía, Colombia; Department of rheumatology, Hospital Militar Central, Bogotá D.C., Colombia. Electronic address:

Introduction/objectives: Enthesitis is a cardinal feature of spondylarthritis (SpA), and the pelvis is a common site of enthesitis. This study aimed to establish the association between pelvic enthesis involvement on pelvic X-ray and SpA diagnosis through a radiographic enthesis index (REI) and to assess the reliability and accuracy of this REI.

Materials And Methods: The participants were SpA patients and a control group composed of patients with chronic lumbar pain without SpA.

We analyzed the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) data of 6519 clinical isolates of ( = 3985), ( = 775), ( = 163), ( = 781), ( = 124), and ( = 691) from 43 centers in Mexico. AMR assays were performed using commercial microdilution systems (37/43) and the disk diffusion susceptibility method (6/43). The presence of carbapenemase-encoding genes was assessed using PCR.

Objective: To bring up which was the surgical resident's perception about their learning experience during COVID-19 pandemic and if it interfered or not with their classes.

Method: Cross-sectional observational study through an anonymous survey conducted among surgical residents. The Mexican Association of General Surgery, through its Women in Surgery Committee, created a questionnaire that included 40 questions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the genomic features and molecular epidemiology of carbapenem-resistant bacteria like Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Mexico using whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics tools.
  • Clinical isolates were collected from 28 medical centers, and various genetic resistance and virulence factors were identified in these bacteria, indicating a significant presence of resistance genes across the studied strains.
  • The findings highlight the prevalence of multiple resistance genes in the tested bacteria, suggesting urgent attention is needed for managing antibiotic resistance in clinical settings in Mexico.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance is a global concern. Analysis of sterile fluids is essential because microorganisms are defined as significant in most cases. Blood, cerebrospinal, and pleural fluids are frequently received in the microbiology lab because they are associated with considerable rates of morbi-mortality.

This study aims to assess the changes in antimicrobial resistance among some critical and high-priority microorganisms collected previously and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in Mexico. We collected antimicrobial susceptibility data for critical and high-priority microorganisms from blood, urine, respiratory samples, and from all specimens, in which the pathogen may be considered a causative agent. Data were stratified and compared for two periods: 2019 versus 2020 and second semester 2019 (prepandemic) versus the second semester 2020 (pandemic).

Psychometric properties of the Gaudiebility (Enjoyment modulators) Scale for Adults of Morelia (GSAM).

PLoS One

July 2024

Instituto de Investigaciones Químico-Biológicas, Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, Morelia, Michoacán, México.

Gaudiebility refers to the set of modulators that regulate the enjoyment experienced, there is only one scale to assess gaudiebility, and it is univariate, which is not congruent with the construct. Therefore, this work's objective was to build a multifactorial scale and study the psychometric properties of the Gaudiebility Scale for Adults of Morelia (GSAM). 1,884 adults participated; 273 in the pilot study and 1,611 in the final study.

Inflammatory and Prothrombotic Biomarkers Associated With the Severity of COVID-19 Infection.

Clin Appl Thromb Hemost

April 2021

Laboratory of Hemostasis and Vascular Biology, Faculty of Medical and Biological Sciences "Dr Ignacio Chávez," Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo, Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico.

Among COVID-19 hospitalized patients, high incidence of alterations in inflammatory and coagulation biomarkers correlates with a poor prognosis. Comorbidities such as chronic degenerative diseases are frequently associated with complications in COVID-19 patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate inflammatory and procoagulant biomarkers in COVID-19 patients from a public hospital in Mexico.

Lower respiratory infections are the most important cause of death due to a transmissible disease. We present a case of severe influenza and coccidioidomycosis lung coinfection in a 65-year-old Mexican migrant. This case highlights the challenges that respiratory viruses impose on the diagnosis of fungal infections and on the multidisciplinary management of these infections.

End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is a worldwide unsolved problem. Access to renal replacement therapies (RRT) is still a challenge in some developed countries and even more so in developing countries. Allo-hemodialysis (alloHD) is a recently proposed, still hypothetical, alternative RRT where the blood of a healthy subject ("buddy") flows countercurrent to the patient's blood through the dialyzer.

Since the publication of the 2008 guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of diverticular disease of the colon by the Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología, significant advances have been made in the knowledge of that disease. A systematic review of articles published in the medical literature from January 2008 to July 2018 was carried out to revise and update the 2008 guidelines and provide new evidence-based recommendations. All high-quality articles in Spanish and English published within that time frame were included.
