Background: Since the publication in 2009 of the Guidelines on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome of the Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología (2009 Guidelines), there have been significant advances in our knowledge of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of this disease.

Aims: To present a consensus review of the most current knowledge of IBS, updating the 2009 Guidelines by incorporating new internationally published scientific evidence, with a special interest in Mexican studies.

Methods: The PubMed literature from January 2009 to March 2015 was reviewed and complemented through a manual search.

The analysis of the phosphorylation status of vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein by flow cytometry has shown a predictive value for adverse events and stent thrombosis. Polymorphisms of CYP2C19 in high risk patients may also relate to adverse cardiovascular events.

The cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma of the uterus, or Stenberg tumor, is a rare variant of a smooth muscle benign tumor, classified in the group presenting an unusual growth pattern; clinically, it affects women in reproductive age. We report the case of a 43 year-old woman, who turned up at the Centro Estatal de Atencion Oncologica (State Cancer Care Center) in Morelia, Michoacan, presenting abnormal uterine bleeding and uterine fibroid of major elements. Two patients who suffered recurrent hydrocephalus after cysticercal removal by means of endoscopic transventricular (ETV) approach are presented. Severe inflammatory lesions within the ventricular system and basal cisterns, with a patent third-ventriculostomy were demonstrated during a second endoscopic observation. Mandatory shunting with prolonged steroid therapy may be indicated after intraoperative cysticercal rupture after ETV removal, as showed by sequential endoscopic observations.
