The Influence of Sex Steroid Hormone Fluctuations on Capsaicin-Induced Pain and TRPV1 Expression.

Int J Mol Sci

July 2024

División de Neurociencias, Instituto de Fisiología Celular, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Ciudad de México 04510, Mexico.

Sexual dimorphism among mammals includes variations in the pain threshold. These differences are influenced by hormonal fluctuations in females during the estrous and menstrual cycles of rodents and humans, respectively. These physiological conditions display various phases, including proestrus and diestrus in rodents and follicular and luteal phases in humans, distinctly characterized by varying estrogen levels.

Background: The most frequent body composition alterations in post-COVID-19 syndrome include low muscle mass, dynapenia, sarcopenia, and obesity. These conditions share interconnected pathophysiological mechanisms that exacerbate each other. The relationship between body composition phenotypes and metabolic abnormalities in post-COVID-19 syndrome remains unclear.

  • Acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN) is a type of scarring hair loss more prevalent in individuals of African descent, and this study focuses on its occurrence in Hispanic patients.
  • A retrospective study involving 142 patients from dermatological centers in several Latin American countries found that the majority were young males with a significant history of trauma in the nuchal area.
  • The findings suggest that AKN should be considered in Hispanic populations, as those with longer-term symptoms tend to present with more severe disease stages.

Article Synopsis
  • - Mycetoma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting subcutaneous tissues and sometimes bones, often caused by bacteria from the genus Nocardia.
  • - A 43-year-old male presented with extensive mycetoma lesions on his forearm, chest, and neck, showing signs such as erythema and draining pus, diagnosed through genetic sequencing which identified Nocardia mexicana.
  • - Successful treatment with a combination of antibiotics was achieved after six months, and the case suggests that Nocardia mexicana can spread through contact with animals, as it was linked to the patient’s manipulation of a calf.

: the emergence of a hospital-acquired pathogen analyzed from the genomic perspective.

Front Microbiol

June 2024

Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Centro de Ciencias Genómicas, Programa de Genómica Evolutiva, Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Article Synopsis
  • Hospital-acquired severe infections are linked to genetic factors related to antibiotic resistance, specifically in strains that may carry genes for carbapenem and tigecycline resistance.
  • A study analyzed 384 genomes from clinical and non-clinical sources globally, revealing significant variability in genetic content, with antibiotic resistance genes largely found in the accessory genome.
  • The research indicates that while core genomes of environmental and hospital isolates are similar, the hospital strains acquire antibiotic resistance genes due to high selective pressure, with no geographical bias in their distribution.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze how often mucocutaneous manifestations occur in people living with HIV and how these relate to their CD4+ T cell counts and HIV viral loads.
  • It involved a cross-sectional review of 659 HIV patients from 1992 to 2022, finding that opportunistic infections were the most common skin issues, with Kaposi sarcoma being the most frequently diagnosed condition.
  • The results showed a high clinicopathological concordance rate of 80.4%, underscoring the need for accurate skin biopsies to help in diagnosing various skin conditions in this patient population.

Background: Pirfenidone has demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic effects in both animal models and some clinical trials. Its potential for antifibrotic activity positions it as a promising candidate for the treatment of various fibrotic diseases. Pirfenidone exerts several pleiotropic and anti-inflammatory effects through different molecular pathways, attenuating multiple inflammatory processes, including the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, apoptosis, and fibroblast activation.

Antimicrobial Resistance in Uropathogenic Strains Isolated from Relapses from Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections.

Microb Drug Resist

July 2024

Departamento de Salud Pública, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Ciudad de México, México.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the characteristics of uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) associated with recurrent urinary tract infections (RUTIs), focusing on their antimicrobial resistance.
  • Researchers analyzed 140 strains from 70 outpatients suffering from RUTIs to determine whether infections were due to relapse or reinfection.
  • Findings revealed that most cases (64.2%) were relapses linked to the original strain, which exhibited significantly higher levels of antimicrobial resistance compared to reinfecting strains, with 89% being multidrug-resistant.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are caused mainly by uropathogenic (UPEC), accounting for both uncomplicated (75%) and complicated (65%) UTIs. Detecting UPEC in a specific, rapid, and timely manner is essential for eradication, and optical biosensors may be useful tools for detecting UPEC. Recently, biosensors have been developed for the selective detection of antigen-antibody-specific interactions.

Frailty and Cancer Prognosis.

Curr Oncol Rep

September 2024

Geriatric Medicine Service, Hospital General de Zona No. 35, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.

Purpose Of Review: This review aims to summarize the current evidence regarding the prognostic role of frailty in older patients diagnosed with cancer and to explore the evidence regarding its prognostic implications in cancer survivors.

Recent Findings: Frailty has been consistently associated with mortality/overall survival, postoperative complications, short- and long-term postoperative mortality, length of stay, among other adverse health-related outcomes in several oncological contexts. The possible association between frailty and treatment toxicity has been less explored, however most studies suggest frailty is a predictor of treatment induced toxicity.

Background: A synovial cyst is a herniation of synovial tissue through a joint capsule, often mistaken for a ganglion cyst. The key distinctions are that synovial cysts have a synovial cell lining, while a ganglion cyst is delineated by dense fibrous connective tissue. Typically found near joints, synovial cysts are associated with conditions like osteoarthritis, prevalent in females aged 20 to 50.

Marsupials and rodents are the most important wild and synanthropic hosts of Trypanosoma cruzi due to the high frequency of infection, maintenance of diverse genetic populations of the parasite, and their close proximity to interact with both transmission cycles, sylvatic and peridomestic. Our aim was to identify the discrete typing units (DTU) of T. cruzi from different wild and synanthropic hosts in two regions of Mexico and to carry out a review of historical data focusing on current knowledge on the diversity and T.
