Purpose: The immunonutritional status of cancer patients has a profound impact on lifespan. Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) evaluates prognosis in operated patients with both neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions. This study estimates the overall survival (OS) of Mexican patients operated on gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) based on PNI.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a rare autosomal recessive disease most commonly affecting the Caucasian population. CF diagnosis can be a challenge due to the large spectrum of pathogenic variants in the CFTR gene and the effects of complex alleles. Next-generation sequencing has improved our understanding of the contribution of these complex alleles to the wide spectrum of CF clinical symptoms and to the response to medications.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder and the leading cause of dementia worldwide, profoundly impacts health and quality of life. While cognitive impairments-such as memory loss, attention deficits, and disorientation-predominate in AD, motor symptoms, though common, remain underexplored. These motor symptoms, including gait disturbances, reduced cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle weakness, sarcopenia, and impaired balance, are often associated with advanced stages of AD and contribute to increased mortality.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent complication associated with severe COVID-19 and has been linked to increased mortality. While vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 has shown effectiveness in reducing severe COVID-19 outcomes, its impact on the development of AKI among hospitalized patients remains unclear.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination on the incidence and severity of AKI and 28-day mortality among hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19.

BACKGROUND The relationship between different subgroups of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the progression of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and liver fibrosis has not been thoroughly studied. This study aims to determine the association between T2D subgroups and the risk of developing advanced liver fibrosis using the Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index, a non-invasive marker for assessing liver fibrosis risk. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 1205 patients with T2D were categorized into 4 distinct subgroups: severe insulin-deficient diabetes (SIDD), severe insulin-resistant diabetes (SIRD), mild obesity-related diabetes (MOD), and mild age-related diabetes (MARD).

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a complex chronic disease characterized by decreased insulin secretion and the development of insulin resistance. Previous genome-wide association studies demonstrated that single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) present in genes coding for ion channels involved in insulin secretion increase the risk of developing this disease. We determined the association of 16 SNPs found in , , , and genes and the increased probability of developing T2DM.

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) has been conceptualized as an outcome of a dysregulated reward system. However, individuals with SUD suffer from anxiety with an intensity depending on the abstinence period length. This review discusses the role of anxiety as a major contributor to the initiation and perpetuation of SUD, and its dependence on an up-regulated defense-antireward system.

A 78-year-old man with a previous diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis on prolonged treatment with corticosteroids presented with intense and progressive pain at the cervical level that prevented him from resting his head and walking, in addition to an ulcerative lesion covering 80% of the lingual area that was previously treated as oral candidiasis without improvement. On arrival, with no clinical or serological data of rheumatoid arthritis, immunosuppressive treatment was suspended, and a biopsy of the oral cavity was requested, confirming the diagnosis of lingual tuberculosis, an extremely rare disease, occurring in less than 1% of extrapulmonary cases. MRI of the cervical spine showed a crush fracture of the C6 and C7 bodies associated with spondylitis of probably infectious etiology that required surgical treatment, and histopathological studies confirmed Pott's disease.
