Chromoblastomycosis is defined as a chronic cutaneous and subcutaneous fungal infection caused by melanized or brown-pigmented fungi. A 63-year-old man farmer showed on external and internal part of the right arm, a well-delimited verrucous and hyperkeratotic plaque, with atrophic and cicatricial areas. Direct examination of skin scrapings samples showed the presence of muriform cells, a classic feature of chromoblastomycosis.

is a fly endemic to and widely distributed throughout the Americas; it is found from the southern regions of Mexico to Argentina. However, because of widespread travel, myiasis has become common in countries where neither the disease nor the species that cause this infection are endemic. Central Mexico, for instance, is not a region where myiasis is endemic.

Some Onchocercidae nematodes such as Pelecitus are parasites of medical and veterinary importance. The adult stage of Pelecitus has been reported infecting birds, and the microfilaria has been associated to human blindness. However, in some of these cases, the nematode was incompletely identified at the species level due to the scarcity of morphological taxonomic keys and, also, to the lack of molecular diagnostic analysis.

Background: Previous observational studies have demonstrated the safety of discharging patients after laparoscopic appendectomy within the same day without hospitalization. The application of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) guidelines has resulted in shorter length of stay, fewer complications, and reduction in medical costs. The aim of this study was to investigate if ERAS protocol implementation in patients with acute uncomplicated appendicitis decreases the length of stay enough to allow for ambulatory laparoscopic appendectomy.

In prostate cancer (PCa), neuroendocrine cells (NE) have been associated with the progression of the disease due to the secretion of neuropeptides that are capable of diffusing and influence surrounding cells. The GABAergic system is enriched in NE-like cells, and contributes to PCa progression. Additionally, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) stimulates the secretion of gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) in peripheral organs.

Psoriasis is triggered by several stimuli that share a systemic production of interferon (IFN)-γ and other inflammatory mediators, which are key to regulate the production of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 and its inhibitor (TIMP)-1 by cells of monocytic lineage. This study evaluates the effect of the sera of 55 patients with psoriasis and 41 non-psoriatic individuals on the production of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 in cultured monocytes from a single healthy blood donor and in U937 cells. The effect of IFN-γ stimulation was also evaluated.

Background & Objective: Continuously active neurogenic regions in the adult brain are located in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricles and subgranular zone of the hippocampal dentate gyrus. Neurogenesis is modulated by many factors such as growth factors, neurotransmitters and hormones. Neuropsychiatric drugs, especially antidepressants, mood stabilizers and antipsychotics may also affect the origin of neuronal cells.

The known classifications for microtia have been cumbersome and difficult to apply in daily consultation. The lack of a progressive surgical behavior according to each degree of affection also contributes to confusion and in a lower success rate in clinical application. The authors propose a progressive surgical classification that takes into consideration the principal anatomical defect and the corresponding correction with modern techniques, having eliminated from previous classifications, those elements that are now considered deformations of the ear, capable of conservative treatment in early stages of life.

Exotic pets, such as the ground hedgehog, are capable of transmitting to the human being different zoonoses, such as salmonellosis, mycobacteria, protozoa such as Cryptosporidium parvum, and dermatophytosis. We present the case report of a male adult patient, who had recently acquired a ground hedgehog, who presented in his hand a ringworm lesion incognito and a Majocchi granuloma. The etiological agent was identified as Trichophyton erinacei by mycological culture and molecular biology.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval stage of the species complex Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. Within this complex, genotypes G6 and G7 have been frequently associated with human CE worldwide. Previous studies exploring the genetic variability and phylogeography of genotypes G6 and G7 have been based on relatively short mtDNA sequences, and the resolution of these studies has often been low.

Introduction And Aims: Eosinophilic cholecystitis is a rare entity that was first described in 1949 and is clinically indistinguishable from calculous cholecystitis. Histologically, there is transmural inflammatory infiltration of the gallbladder wall, more than 90% of which is composed of eosinophils. The aim of the present article was to review the prevalence of eosinophilic cholecystitis and analyze the clinical and surgical characteristics of patients diagnosed with the disease that were operated on at our hospital.

The term scans without evidence of dopaminergic deficit (SWEDD) can be associated with any patient diagnosed at first with Parkinson's disease but with a negative dopamine transporter-single photon emission computed tomography (DaTSPECT), which does not confirm the presynaptic dopaminergic deficiency. Therefore, an alternative diagnosis should be sought to support parkinsonism as a clinical diagnosis. Parkinsonism is a well-known manifestation of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), particularly frequent in those with positive DaTSPECT.

Introduction: Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) is a procedure that uses neurophysiological techniques in order to evaluate the motor and sensitive systems during surgeries that endanger the nervous system.
Method: The approach, scope, target population, and clinical questions to be answered were defined. A systematic search of the evidence was conducted step by step; during the first stage, clinical practice guidelines were collected, during the second stage systematic reviews were obtained, and during the third stage, clinical trials and observational studies were procured.

Introduction: Streptococcus pneumoniae (Sp) is the main cause of community-acquired pneumonia in the elderly, hence the importance to establish the prevalence of nasopharyngeal colonization by different Sp serotypes in adults.
Methods: from December 2009 to June 2010, nasopharyngeal cultures were taken from adults living in rural communities in Mexico for the isolation and serotyping of Sp by the Quellung reaction. Penicillin and ceftriaxone susceptibility tests were performed by the microdilution method.

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are considered one of the main causes of morbidity worldwide, and uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is the etiological agent associated with these infections. The high morbidity produced by the UTI and the limitation of antibiotic treatments promotes the search for new alternatives against these infections. The knowledge that has been generated regarding the immune response in the urinary tract is important for the development of effective strategies in the UTI prevention, treatment, and control.

Background: Ankle fractures are one of the most frequent lesions of the musculoskeletal system; there are studies that report an increase in the incidence of these fractures starting in the 1970s, associated with the increased media outreach of sporting activities. Supra- and transyndesmal fractures often lead to injury of the syndesmosis, which, if not treated properly, will leave joint instability. The most common treatment is the placement of a transyndesmal screw; there is controversy on the height in which it should be located with regard to the distal tibial joint line.
