Introduction: The number of vertical artefacts (VAs) in lung ultrasound (LUS) impacts patients' clinical management. This study aimed to demonstrate the influence of ultrasound settings on the number of VAs in patients under invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV).
Methods: Patients under IMV were recruited for LUS, including three breathing cycles with a motionless curvilinear probe on the thoracic region with the most VAs.

Background: Subdural hematoma (SDH) typically occurs due to traumatic brain injury but can arise as a rare complication of procedures like endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV).
Case Presentation: We report an unusual case in a 9-year-old male with previous resection of a fourth-ventricle ependymoma at 2 years of age. Seven years post-surgery, he presented with worsening hydrocephalus and underwent ETV.

Extra-cavitary primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), often associated with human herpes virus 8 (HHV8) infection, represents a rare and aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which is predominantly found in individuals with severe immunosuppression. As an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-associated lymphoma, PEL typically manifests in the context of advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, requiring tailored therapeutic approaches to manage both the lymphoma and underlying immunodeficiency. A 53-year-old male patient from Cape Verde presented with a three-day history of fever, night sweats, right iliac fossa pain, hematochezia, and an unintentional weight loss of five kilograms over the previous two months.

Echocardiography is crucial for evaluating patients at risk of clinical deterioration. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and velocity time integral (VTI) aid in diagnosing shock, but bedside calculations can be time-consuming and prone to variability. Artificial intelligence technology shows promise in providing assistance to clinicians performing point-of-care echocardiography.

Perioperative anesthetic, surgical and critical careinterventions can affect brain physiology and overall brain health. The clinical utility of electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring in anesthesia and intensive care settings is multifaceted, offering critical insights into the level of consciousness and depth of anesthesia, facilitating the titration of anesthetic doses, and enabling the detection of ischemic events and epileptic activity. Additionally, EEG monitoring can aid in predicting perioperative neurocognitive disorders, assessing the impact of systemic insults on cerebral function, and informing neuroprognostication.

Refractory epilepsy, characterized by seizures that do not respond to standard antiseizure medications, remains a significant clinical challenge. The central role of the immune system on the occurrence of epileptic disorders has been long studied, but recent perspectives on immunometabolism and neuroinflammation are reshaping scientific knowledge. The ketogenic diet and its variants have been considered an important medical nutrition therapy for refractory epilepsy and may have a potential modulation effect on the immune system, specifically, on the metabolism of immune cells.

Background Context: Spondylodiscitis management presents significant clinical challenges, particularly in critically ill patients, where the risks and benefits of surgical intervention must be carefully balanced. The optimal timing of surgery in this context remains a subject of debate.
Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of early surgery versus delayed surgery or conservative management in critically ill patients with de novo pyogenic spondylodiscitis.

Background And Aim: Diabetes has been shown in last decades to be associated with a significantly higher mortality among patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with primary PCI (PPCI). Therefore, the aim of current study was to evaluate the impact of diabetes on times delays, reperfusion and mortality in a contemporary STEMI population undergoing PPCI, including treatment during the COVID pandemic.
Methods And Results: The ISACS-STEMI COVID-19 is a large-scale retrospective multicenter registry involving PPCI centers from Europe, Latin America, South-East Asia and North-Africa, including patients treated from 1st of March until June 30, 2019 and 2020.

Background: Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a devastating malabsorptive condition and the most common cause of chronic intestinal failure (CIF). During the intestinal rehabilitation process, patients may need parenteral support for months or years, parenteral nutrition (PN), or hydration/electrolyte supplementation, as a bridge for the desired enteral autonomy.
Summary: Several classification criteria have been highlighted to reflect different perspectives in CIF.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a multisystemic heterogeneous disease characterized by the presence of cysts in several organs leading to progressive dysfunction. The cardiovascular manifestations of ADPKD include hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy, and valvular heart disease, predominantly mitral valve abnormalities. We present the case of a 30-year-old male with a past medical history of ADPKD who was admitted to the emergency department due to sudden chest pain and signs of congestive heart failure for weeks.

Listeriosis is a series of diseases caused by the bacteria . Typically presenting with mild symptoms of diarrhea, fever, and myalgias, it can, in some cases, assume an invasive form with systemic involvement. Cardiac involvement in listeriosis is rare, with very few reports describing the involvement of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED), which hampers the development of conclusive recommendations regarding CIED management or antibiotic courses.

Background/objectives: Home parenteral support (HPS) is the core of chronic intestinal failure (IF) treatment. For legal reasons, HPS in Portugal lags behind other European countries, and only a few patients were taken care of at home by nurses. Now, the legislation has changed, allowing patient self-care.

Unlabelled: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by the progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons, leading to a range of motor and non-motor symptoms.
Background/objectives: Over the past decade, studies have identified a potential link between the microbiome and PD pathophysiology. The literature suggests that specific bacterial communities from the gut, oral, and nasal microbiota may be involved in neuroinflammatory processes, which are hallmarks of PD.

Non-puerperal uterine inversion is a rare complication, and its incidence is not well documented in the current literature. The most common risk factor is the presence of submucosal fibroids. Nonetheless, any endometrial pathology can precipitate this inversion and may also have a malignant etiology.
