Introduction: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are established treatments for peritoneal surface malignancies, traditionally performed via laparotomy. Recent advancements in laparoscopic approaches (L-CRS + HIPEC) have shown promising results in selected patients.

Methods: The PSOGI registry, established in November 2019, collects data from specialized centers performing L-CRS + HIPEC.

Tongue mobility is an obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) marker and myofunctional therapy (MFT) target. For this reason, all paediatric patients with sleep-disordered breathing should require a combined functional assessment from an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist and a phonoaudiologist to confirm or rule out the presence of ankyloglossia. To our knowledge, this is the first case of a 13-year-old girl diagnosed with severe OSA and a significant decrease of 94% in her apnoea index (AI), requiring frenotomy with an immediate postoperative change in the tongue position.

Background And Aims: Despite considerable evidence that lipid-lowering therapies (LLTs) afford clinical benefit, the control of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is suboptimal, and available LLTs are underused, especially in patients at high and very high cardiovascular (CV) risk. This study assesses the real-world LDL-C target attainment rate in patients on LLT before experiencing a first major acute cardiovascular event (MACE).

Methods And Results: The HEARTBEAT was a retrospective, multicentre observational study.

  • Immunotherapy has significantly improved treatment responses and survival rates for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), establishing immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) as the key treatment method.
  • A systematic review of clinical trials from the inception of immunotherapy until June 2022 showed broad usage of ICIs across various treatment lines and indications, including new approaches for adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapies.
  • The future of NSCLC treatment is promising, with ongoing development of new immunotherapy drugs, such as anti-LAG-3 and IDO1, which are expected to further enhance treatment options and effectiveness.

Unlabelled: The laparoscopic approach for cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (L-CRS + HIPEC) in highly selected patients was previously reported from the PSOGI registry with a demonstrable reduction in length of stay and post-operative morbidity. This study aims to update this international PSOGI registry with a larger cohort of patients and a longer follow-up period.

Methods: An international registry was designed through a networking database (REDCAP®).

We present the case of an 86-year-old Caucasian male with an 11-year history of low-grade chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) presenting with nephrotic syndrome (NS). Renal biopsy findings showed a diffuse mesangial and endocapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis (GN) lesion with fine granular deposits, consistent with a rare morphologic variant of proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal immunoglobulin deposits (PGNMID)-lambda light chain (LC) only. Monthly combination therapy of rituximab (500 mg/m on day 1), fludarabine (30 mg/m on days 1-3), and cyclophosphamide (750 mg/m on days 1-3) was administered.

Genetic variants of antioxidant enzymes and environmental exposures as molecular biomarkers associated with the risk and aggressiveness of bladder cancer.

Sci Total Environ

October 2022

GENYO, Centre for Genomics and Oncological Research: Pfizer, University of Granada, Andalusian Regional Government, PTS Granada, Granada, Spain; University of Granada, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology III, Faculty of Medicine, PTS, Granada, Spain; Instituto de Investigación Biosanitaria ibs. GRANADA, 18014 Granada, Spain.

Bladder cancer (BC) is one of the top 10 most common tumours worldwide; however, no molecular markers are currently available for tumour management and follow-up. BC could benefit from molecular biomarkers in environmental disease, which provide mechanistic understanding of individual susceptibility to exposure-related cancers and allow characterizing genetic alterations in the molecular pathway for malignancy. This case-control study performed a molecular analysis in 99 BC and 125 controls.

The Global Initiative for Asthma Report updated in 2019 stated that potential benefits of allergen immunotherapy (AIT), compared to pharmacological and avoidance options, must be weighed against the risk of adverse effects and the inconvenience and cost of the prolonged course of therapy in asthma. Thus, with the aim of clarifying some aspects with regard to the possible use of AIT in allergic asthma treatment armamentarium, a group of expert allergists from the Spanish Allergy and Clinical Immunology Scientific Society (SEAIC), particularly from the Immunotherapy and Asthma Interest Groups developed a frequently asked questions in clinical practice. This document updates relevant topics on the use of AIT in asthma and could facilitate physician clinical decisions and improve health outcomes for individual patients.

Purpose: The results of a technique with a double reinsertion of the aponeurosis to the tarsus and aponeurosis to Whitnall's ligament (ATW) were compared with a simple reinsertion of the aponeurosis to the tarsus (AT) in acquired aponeurotic palpebral ptosis surgery.

Methods: Analytical, observational, retrospective, cohort study. Seven hundred and twenty-two consecutive cases with acquired aponeurotic palpebral ptosis have been treated surgically between 2000 and 2012 and have been followed up for 5 years.

  • Exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) is more effective than corticosteroids for achieving mucosal healing in children with Crohn's disease, without the negative side effects of steroids.
  • A study covering 222 newly diagnosed pediatric patients found that 83% achieved clinical remission after an average of 8 weeks of EEN, with significant reductions in faecal calprotectin levels.
  • Factors predicting a better response to EEN include specific scores on the Crohn's disease activity index, lower calprotectin levels, elevated CRP, and ileal involvement, suggesting EEN should be first-line treatment for pediatric Crohn's disease.

Importance: Capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation (CM-AVM) syndrome is a recently described syndrome with distinctive cutaneous lesions. Very little is known about the histopathology of these lesions.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the histopathological characteristics of the pink macules of the CM-AVM syndrome and to investigate if these pink macules could be classified as capillary malformations or arteriovenous malformations based on their histopathological features.

With cisplatin-based chemotherapy, most patients with ovarian dysgerminoma will survive long-term. Bleomycin is an important part of ovarian germ cell tumors (OGCT) treatment, and its dose-limiting toxicity is the development of pulmonary toxicity and it is increased in patients older than 40 years. We report the case of an elderly patient with an unresectable ovarian dysgerminoma who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy and who developed fatal bleomycin pulmonary toxicity (BPT) after surgery.

Infliximab (IFX) is a valid treatment for Crohn's disease (CD), but a relevant percentage of patients do not benefit from this therapy. In the Japanese population, the response to IFX was associated with markers in the TNF receptor superfamily 1A (TNFRSF1A) and 1B (TNFRSF1B) genes. We aimed to replicate the association previously described in the Japanese population and to ascertain the role of TNF receptors as modulators of the response to IFX.
