Body composition phenotypes and bone health in young adults: A cluster analysis.

Clin Nutr

July 2023

Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, Health and Social Research Center, Cuenca, Spain; Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, Facultad de Enfermería de Albacete, Albacete, Spain.

Background And Aims: Lean mass is considered the best predictor of bone mass, as it is an excellent marker of bone mechanical stimulation, and changes in lean mass are highly correlated with bone outcomes in young adults. The aim of this study was to use cluster analysis to examine phenotype categories of body composition assessed by lean and fat mass in young adults and to assess how these body composition categories are associated with bone health outcomes.

Methods: Cluster cross-sectional analyses of data from 719 young adults (526 women) aged 18-30 years from Cuenca and Toledo, Spain, were conducted.

Introduction: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is characterized by nociplastic pain with alterations in sympathetic function. Neuromodulation could be a useful alternative therapy option. Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulation has demonstrated better results than conventional spinal cord stimulation (SCS) for patients with CRPS in lower limbs.

Background: We recently identified an outbreak of occupational allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) involving workers of a Spanish company selling smartphone protective cases from a glue product. A chemical analysis of one glue sample revealed the presence of 4-acryloylmorpholine among other allergens. The same glue is also used to attach tempered glass protective cases to Apple smartwatches.

Background: Sensitization to acrylates is a concern in the occupational/environmental dermatology field.

Objective: To describe an occupational allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) outbreak from a smartphone screen protector glue.

Methods: Thirteen affected workers of a chain store selling phone screen protectors were investigated in five Spanish dermatology departments.

Background: Lateral epicondylitis is common in workers who perform repetitive movements of the entire upper limb. Approximately 85%-90% of patients respond satisfactorily to conservative treatment, but in resistant patients, surgical treatment is considered. Classic open surgery is successful in between 70% and 97% of patients, similarly to more modern techniques such as arthroscopy.

Purpose: To evaluate the intra and interobserver reproducibility of a new goniometric method for evaluating the isolated passive range of motion of the glenohumeral joint in an outpatient setting.

Methods: This is a prospective observational study on healthy subjects. The Glenohumeral ROM Assessment with Scapular Pinch (GRASP) method is a new method for assessing the isolated range of motion (ROM) of the glenohumeral joint (GH) by a single examiner with a clinical goniometer.

Objective: To define the role of the flexion-relaxation phenomenon (FRP), assessed through ratios (FRR), as a diagnostic test to define impairment in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP).

Material And Method: The study sample consisted of 180 participants (16 healthy volunteers and 164 patients on work disability due to CLBP), who were consecutively referred for evaluation at the Biomechanics Laboratory of a workplace accident insurance company from January 2012 to December 2017. The evaluations consisted of an isometric dynamometry test, a kinematic test and assessment of the FRP phenomenon.

Purpose: To evaluate the intra and interobserver reproducibility of a new system that assesses the three-dimensional humero-scapulo-thoracic kinematics using wearable technology in an outpatient setting. To obtain normative data with the system for scapular angular motions in three planes.

Methods: The SHoW Motion 3D kinematic tracking system is a motion analysis system that uses wireless wearable non-invasive inertial-magnetic sensors to assess the three-dimensional kinematics of the shoulder girdle.

Introduction: Radial head fractures represent 33-75% of elbow fractures (30 cases/100,000 population/year). "Terrible triad's Hotchkiss" is characterized by radial head fracture, coronoid fracture and elbow dislocation. Our principal goal is to compare our results on each type of prosthesis in the context of the triad.

Background: Smartphones have become a fundamental part of our society, not only everyday, but also professional, since many applications have emerged for the health field. The objective of the study was to analyze the reliability and concurrent validity of an app for iPhone in relation to traditional measurement.

Material And Methods: A non-experimental, double-blind validation and descriptive study.

Chronic Achilles tendon rupture associated with rupture of the peroneus brevis tendon. A clinical case.

Rev Esp Cir Ortop Traumatol (Engl Ed)

February 2020

Servicio de Cirugía Ortopédica y Traumatología, Hospital FREMAP Barcelona, Barcelona, España.

The treatment of a chronic rupture of the Achilles tendon remains difficult. Different techniques such as augmentation or plasties are used for restoring the gap in these ruptures. The combination of Achilles tendon rupture with other tendon ruptures may increase the difficulty in their treatment.

Influence of the thickness of the transverse carpal ligament in carpal tunnel syndrome.

Rev Esp Cir Ortop Traumatol (Engl Ed)

October 2018

Servicio de Cirugía Ortopédica y Traumatología, Hospital FREMAP, Majadahonda, Madrid, España.

Objective: To determine if the thickness of the transverse carpal ligament measured by T2 axial magnetic resonance imaging actually influences the onset of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Material And Method: 94 patients between January 2015 and June 2016, of whom 28 had carpal tunnel syndrome, underwent magnetic resonance imaging, 37 with discomfort in different carpus regions without symptoms of carpal tunnel and 29 healthy subjects. Two observers performed 3 measurements in 3 different levels, and in the 3 groups of patients.

Background: Historically, failed conservative treatment for irreparably damaged distal radioulnar joints (DRUJs) is treated via distal ulnar resection or DRUJ fusion; complications include disabling painful convergence of the radius and ulnar stump during lifting Various treatments for radioulnar impingement include distal radioulnar Achilles tendon allograft interpositional arthroplasty. This technique does not adequately prevent radioulnar impingement and we explore an alternative treatment.

Methods: We report 7 adult patients who failed Achilles tendon interposition, subsequently treated with Aptis total DRUJ prostheses (mean follow-up, 26 months; range, 7-40).

Use of grafts in rotator cuff re-rupture.

Rev Esp Cir Ortop Traumatol

May 2017

Servicio de Cirugía Ortopédica y Traumatología, Hospital Fremap Sevilla, Sevilla, España.

Introduction And Objectives: Rotator cuff re-ruptures appear in 38-65% of cases. In order to reduce this rate, many studies have been performed using different types of biomaterial for purely mechanical aims (re-inforce the suture) and/or biological agents (growth factor transporterts). The aim of this study is to review 22 cases treated with xenografts and analyse various current alternatives.

Bone marrow stimulation (BMS) techniques represent the first-line treatment for unstable osteochondral lesions of the talus or after conservative treatment failure. These techniques are intended to penetrate the subchondral bone to elicit bleeding and allow precursor cells and cytokines from bone marrow to populate the lesion. However, the fibrocartilaginous repair tissue arising after marrow stimulation confers inferior mechanical and biological properties compared with the original hyaline cartilage.
