Effectiveness of methotrexate and leflunomide as corticoid-sparing drugs in patients with polymyalgia rheumatica.

Rheumatol Adv Pract

March 2024

Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, Department of Medicine, Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, The University of Alabama at Birmingham, United States.

Objectives: The need for glucocorticoid-sparing drugs (GCSD) remains an important issue and is an unmet need in the treatment of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). We therefore aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of methotrexate (MTX) and of leflunomide (LEF) in daily clinical practice in PMR patients from Argentina.

Methods: A multicentre and observational study (medical records review) of PMR patients seen between 2007 and 2023, who had at least three months of follow-up after starting a GCSD, either MTX or LEF, was performed.

Background: Previously we performed clinical encapsulated neonatal porcine islet transplantation under comprehensive regulation, and demonstrated the efficacy and safety. To analyze the patients' quality of life (QOL), we assessed patients' opinions 10 years after islet xenotransplantation.

Methods: Twenty-one type 1 diabetic patients received microencapsulated neonatal porcine islet transplants in Argentina were enrolled.

Pediatr Int

January 2023

Universidad de Buenos Aires, CONICET, Instituto de Fisiología y Biofísica (IFIBIO) Bernardo Houssay, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Background: The impact of the pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 (PIMS-TS) in low- and middle-income countries remains poorly understood. Our aim was to understand the characteristics and outcomes of PIMS-TS in Argentina.

Methods: This observational, prospective, and retrospective multicenter study enrolled patients younger than 18 years-old manifesting PIMS-TS, Kawasaki disease (KD) or Kawasaki shock syndrome (KSS) between March 2020 and May 2021.

An association of deletions in the IKZF1 gene (IKZF1del) with poor prognosis in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has been demonstrated. Additional deletions in other genes (IKZF1plus) define different IKZF1del subsets. We analyzed the influence of IKZF1del and/or IKZF1plus in the survival of children with ALL.

Humoral and cellular immune memory response 12 years following single dose vaccination against hepatitis A in Argentinian children.

Vaccine

January 2022

ISALUD University, Centro de Estudios para la Prevención y Control de Enfermedades Transmisibles, Venezuela 931 C1095AAS, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Infants' universal hepatitis A virus (HAV) single-dose vaccination has been highly effective for controlling HAV infection in Argentina, and in other Latin-American countries that adopted that strategy. Although antibodies wane over time, this has not been associated with HAV outbreaks or breakthrough infections, suggesting a relevant role for memory immunity. This study assessed long term humoral and cellular immune memory response after an average of 12 years follow-up of HAV single-dose vaccination.

Introduction: In patients with severe aortic stenosis, low-gradient, low-flow and preserved ejection fraction (≥ 50%) (LG/LFp) the decrease in stroke volume index (Svi) could be due to diminished contractility. The aim of this study was to analyze if low Svi in patients with LG/LFp is related to a decrease in contractility.

Methods: Thirty patients with LF/LGp and 63 normal subjects were studied with Doppler echocardiography.

Surgery is a critical period in the survival of patients with cancer. While resective surgery of primary tumors has shown to prolong the life of these patients, it can also promote mechanisms associated with metastatic progression. During surgery, patients require general and sometimes local anesthetics that also modulate mechanisms that can favor or reduce metastasis.
