Endoscopic spinal surgery has gained increasing popularity over the past 10 years. Its muscle-preserving nature, reduction in postoperative pain, and lower complication rates have contributed to the growing number of surgeons adopting this technique year after year. This same progression has led to the application of the technique in oncological pathology, primarily for separation surgeries and biopsies of extradural lesions.

Background: We evaluated comprehension and application of the 2015 neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) criteria core elements by neurologists in Latin America (LATAM) who routinely diagnose and care for NMOSD patients by (i) identifying typical/suggestive NMOSD syndromes, (ii) detecting typical MRI NMOSD lesions and meeting MRI dissemination in space (DIS) criteria, and (iii) evaluating historical symptoms suggestive of NMOSD.

Methods: We conducted an anonymous, voluntary, self-administered web- and case-based survey cross-sectional study from October 2023 to January 2024 of neurologists identified through the LACTRIMS database. Questions were presented first through iterative clinical cases or imaging, followed by questions directly evaluating comprehension of definitions.

Human milkoligosaccharides: Role in lactation and infant formulas.

Arch Argent Pediatr

December 2024

Instituto de Lactología Industrial (INLAIN, CONICET-UNL), Facultad de Ingeniería Química, Universidad Nacional del Litoral, Santa Fe, Argentina.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) are the specific and selective growth substrate for bifidobacteria, preventing pathogen adhesion, modulating the immune system, and impacting neurodevelopment. Human milk is the best food for the neonate; infant formulas enriched with HMOs are indicated when human milk is not possible or sufficient. HMOs developed and added to available infant formulas are 2'-FL (2'-fucosyl lactose), 3-FL (3-fucosyl lactose), 3'-SL (3'-sialyl lactose), 6'-SL (6'-sialyl lactose), LNT (lacto-N-tetraose), and 3'-GL (3'-galactosyl lactose), the latter being produced in situ by microbial fermentation.

Effect of zinc on sperm recovered by swim-up.

J Assist Reprod Genet

November 2024

Laboratorio de Medicina Reproductiva. Facultad de Ciencias Bioquímicas y Farmacéuticas, Universidad Nacional de Rosario, Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina.

Purpose: Zinc is known to influence chromatin stability, motility and protection against oxidative stress. While swim-up remains the preferred method for selecting sperm in Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART), concerns arise regarding sperm DNA fragmentation associated with this procedure. Given zinc's significant role in protecting sperm DNA integrity and motility, we aimed to investigate the impact of zinc supplementation during the swim-up process on sperm quality.

Current smoking is related to severe damage in systemic lupus erythematosus patients.

Lupus

January 2025

Centro de Educación Médica e Investigaciones Clínicas, CEMIC "Norberto Quirno", Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate how smoking exposure is linked to organ damage in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) using a specific damage score (SLICC-SDI) in an Argentinian cohort.
  • Out of 623 SLE patients analyzed, 84% were non-smokers, while 16% were current smokers, with 17% showing severe organ damage (SLICC-SDI ≥3).
  • The findings indicated that current smoking, older age, longer disease duration, and the use of cyclophosphamide are significantly associated with severe organ damage in SLE patients.

Insights into AMA205's Unprecedented Antibiotic Resistance.

Int J Mol Sci

October 2024

Center for Applied Biotechnology Studies, Department of Biological Science, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, California State University Fullerton, Fullerton, CA 92831, USA.

The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in clinical settings has become a significant global concern. Among these bacteria, stands out due to its remarkable ability to acquire resistance genes and persist in hospital environments, leading to some of the most challenging infections. Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) plays a crucial role in the evolution of this pathogen.

  • Over-reliance on Short-Acting Beta-Agonists (SABA) leads to poor asthma control and increased risks of exacerbations and death, highlighting the need for intervention.
  • The study evaluated the Reliever Reliance Test (RRT), a tool designed to help patients self-assess and change their behavior related to SABA usage.
  • Results showed that 82% of participants were at medium-to-high risk for SABA over-reliance, 73% reported SABA overuse, and 75% intended to discuss their treatment with a doctor, indicating that the RRT effectively raised awareness and facilitated discussions about asthma management.

Objective: To examine the predictors of the occurrence of severe thrombocytopenia and its impact on damage accrual and mortality in SLE patients.

Methods: Factors associated with time to severe thrombocytopenia (platelet count ≤20,000/mm) occurring from the onset of SLE symptoms were assessed by Cox proportional hazards regressions. The association of severe thrombocytopenia with mortality was evaluated by logistic regression analyses while its impact on damage was by negative binomial regression.
