Objectives: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) was believed to have minimal impact on pregnancy outcomes apart from the risk of perinatal transmission. In more recent years, there have been reports of adverse associations, most consistently preterm birth (PTB), but this is in the context of high rates of caesarean section. The aim of this study was to explore the association of HBV on pregnancy outcomes in marginalized, low-income populations on the Myanmar-Thailand border.

Purpose: Using the EORTC Global Health Status (GHS) scale, we aimed to determine minimal clinically important differences (MCID) in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) changes for older cancer patients with a geriatric risk profile, as defined by the geriatric 8 (G8) health screening tool, undergoing treatment. Simultaneously, we assessed baseline patient characteristics prognostic for HRQOL changes.

Methods: Our analysis included 1424 (G8 ≤ 14) older patients with cancer scheduled to receive chemotherapy (n = 683) or surgery (n = 741).

Introduction: Stent-assisted coiling (SAC) has widened indications of endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms (wide-neck, fusiform aneurysms); moreover, it is associated with more stable anatomical results. Besides the development of other techniques such as flow diverter stents, bifurcation stents, or intrasaccular flow disruptors, SAC remains one of the most used endovascular techniques because it provides good clinical and anatomical results for most aneurysms. Several devices based on the same principle are available and have undergone many adaptations and developments over 20 years of intracranial stenting.

A simulation study of diffusion-convection interaction and its effect on multiple breath washout indices.

Respir Physiol Neurobiol

December 2018

Respiratory Division, University Hospital Erasme, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Brussels, Belgium.

Experimental studies of acinar ventilation heterogeneity (S) derived from the multiple breath washout have shown the potential of S to pick up structural change in lung disease. Recent S data suggest that even when intra-acinar structure is unaltered, the combination of convection, diffusion and number of acini fed by patent terminal bronchioles can modify S. We show here how S is affected by structural features such as the secondary alveolar septa, intra-acinar ramification and number of ventilated acini.

Case: Surgical management of tibial plateau fractures can be challenging, and complications can be devastating. We report the case of a lateral tibial plateau fracture malunion with an associated intra-articular depression, which we treated with an open-book osteotomy, obviating the need for an early corrective osteotomy or knee arthroplasty.

Conclusion: A tibial plateau fracture malunion can be reconstructed.

Galectin-1 is a diagnostic marker involved in thyroid cancer progression.

Int J Oncol

September 2017

Laboratory of Human Anatomy and Experimental Oncology, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, University of Mons, Mons, Belgium.

Article Synopsis
  • Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is a common method used to check for thyroid cancer, but some harmless lumps still end up being treated like cancer.
  • Researchers studied a protein called galectin-1 to see if it could help tell the difference between benign and malignant thyroid tumors.
  • They found that galectin-1 was missing in benign tumors but present in cancer cells, making it a good marker to help diagnose thyroid cancer early.

Chronic maxillary atelectasis and silent sinus syndrome: two faces of the same clinical entity.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

September 2017

ENT Department, Université Catholique de Louvain, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire UCL Namur, Av. Docteur Gaston Therasse 1, 5530, Yvoir, Belgium.

Chronic maxillary atelectasis (CMA) and silent sinus syndrome (SSS) are rare clinical entities characterized by an implosion of the maxillary sinus that may or may not be associated with sinonasal symptoms, and are complicated by ipsilateral enophthalmos. The objective of this article is to discuss the definitions, physiopathology, clinical and radiographic characteristics, and surgical management of these entities. We retrospectively reviewed 18 patients (7 women, 11 men, aged 12-70 years) diagnosed and treated in the ear, nose, and throat departments of four Belgian teaching hospitals between 2000 and 2015.

Pathogenesis and management of Brugada syndrome.

Nat Rev Cardiol

December 2016

Heart Rhythm Management Centre, UZ Brussel-VUB, Brussels, Laarbeeklaan 101, 1090 Brussels, Belgium.

Brugada syndrome is an inherited disease characterized by an increased risk of sudden cardiac death owing to ventricular arrhythmias in the absence of structural heart disease. Since the first description of the syndrome >20 years ago, considerable advances have been made in our understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved and the strategies to stratify at-risk patients. The development of repolarization-depolarization abnormalities in patients with Brugada syndrome can involve genetic alterations, abnormal neural crest cell migration, improper gap junctional communication, or connexome abnormalities.

Growing evidence underscores the important role of glycemic control in health and recovery from illness. Carbohydrate ingestion in the diet or administration in nutritional support is mandatory, but carbohydrate intake can adversely affect major body organs and tissues if resulting plasma glucose becomes too high, too low, or highly variable. Plasma glucose control is especially important for patients with conditions such as diabetes or metabolic stress resulting from critical illness or surgery.
