Surface proteins of Gram-positive pathogens are key determinants of virulence that substantially shape host-microbe interactions. Specifically, these proteins mediate host invasion and pathogen transmission, drive the acquisition of heme-iron from hemoproteins, and subvert innate and adaptive immune cell responses to push bacterial survival and pathogenesis in a hostile environment. Herein, we briefly review and highlight the multi-facetted roles of cell wall-anchored proteins of multidrug-resistant , a common etiological agent of purulent skin and soft tissue infections as well as severe systemic diseases in humans.

In light of rising antibiotic resistance, better methods for selection of empiric antibiotic treatment based on clinical and microbiological data are needed. Most guidelines target specific clinical infections, and variably adjust empiric antibiotic selection by certain patient characteristics. Coverage estimates reflect the probability that an antibiotic regimen will be active against the causative pathogen once confirmed and can provide an objective basis for empiric regimen selection.

Background: Fulminant herpetic hepatitis due to herpes simplex virus (HSV), serotype 1 or 2, is a rare but often fatal complication after solid organ transplantation (SOT). Transfer of the gut microbiota from wild to laboratory mice alters the host's immune status and enhances resistance to infectious and metabolic diseases, but understanding of which microbes and how they promote host fitness is only emerging. Background: A guideline identifying when inpatients with penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotic allergy labels (PCAAL) can receive β-lactam antibiotics increased β-lactam receipt at a large northeastern US health care system.
