Article Synopsis
  • HIV management during pregnancy in Switzerland has improved over the last 34 years, resulting in a decrease in preterm birth rates in women living with HIV, from an average of 20.4% before 2010 to 11.3% since then, although these rates are still double that of the general population (5%).
  • Factors associated with preterm birth include older maternal age, lower CD4 counts, detectable viral loads in the third trimester, and the mode of delivery, while the type of antiretroviral therapy showed no significant impact.
  • Key findings indicate that better viral control and the adoption of vaginal delivery for those with low viral loads at birth contributed to the decrease in preterm births among women living with HIV

First clinical implementation of insertion force measurement in cochlear implantation surgery.

Front Neurol

April 2024

Department of Otolaryngology and Cluster of Excellence EXC 2177/1 "Hearing4all", Hannover Medical School, Hannover, Germany.

Purpose: The significance of atraumatic electrode array (EA) insertion in cochlear implant (CI) surgery is widely acknowledged, with consensus that forces due to EA insertion are directly correlated with insertion trauma. Unfortunately, the manual perception of these forces through haptic feedback is inherently limited, and techniques for force measurements to monitor the insertion are not yet available. Addressing this gap, we developed of a force-sensitive insertion tool capable of capturing real-time insertion forces during standard CI surgery.

Introduction: Blinding is a methodologically important aspect in randomised controlled trials yet frequently overlooked in trials of spinal manual therapy interventions for back pain. To help inform the blinding methods of a future, double-placebo-controlled trial comparing spinal manual therapy and nerve root injection for lumbosacral radicular pain, we set four objectives: (1) to assess the feasibility of blinding participants, randomly allocated to an active or placebo-control spinal manual therapy intervention protocol, (2) to assess the feasibility of blinding outcome assessors within the trial, (3) to explore the influence of spinal manual therapy experience and low back pain on blinding, and (4) to explore factors contributing to perceptions about intervention assignment among participants and outcome assessors.

Methods And Analysis: Two-parallel-group, single-centre, placebo-controlled, methodological blinding feasibility randomised trial.

Trends in Mortality in People With HIV From 1999 through 2020: A Multicohort Collaboration.

Clin Infect Dis

November 2024

Centre of Excellence for Health, Immunity and Infections (CHIP), Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Article Synopsis
  • Mortality rates among people with HIV significantly dropped after the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy, particularly between 1999 and 2009, but remained stable from 2010 to 2020.
  • The study analyzed data from over 55,000 participants, revealing that AIDS-related deaths were most common in the earlier period, while deaths from non-AIDS-related malignancies increased in the later years.
  • Despite the decline in overall mortality, the reduction was not entirely attributed to better immune function or the presence of other risk factors, suggesting other contributing elements may be at play.

Adoptive cell therapy (ACT) with tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) is effective in patients with melanoma, although long-term responses seem restricted in patients who have complete remissions. Many patients develop secondary resistance to TIL-ACT but the involved mechanisms are unclear. In this study, we describe a case of secondary resistance to TIL-ACT possibly due to intratumoral heterogeneity and selection of a resistant tumor cell clone by the transferred T cells.

Limbal epithelial progenitor cells (LEPC) rely on their niche environment for proper functionality and self-renewal. While extracellular vesicles (EV), specifically small EVs (sEV), have been proposed to support LEPC homeostasis, data on sEV derived from limbal niche cells like limbal mesenchymal stromal cells (LMSC) remain limited, and there are no studies on sEVs from limbal melanocytes (LM). In this study, we isolated sEV from conditioned media of LMSC and LM using a combination of tangential flow filtration and size exclusion chromatography and characterized them by nanoparticle tracking analysis, transmission electron microscopy, Western blot, multiplex bead arrays, and quantitative mass spectrometry.
