Fournier's gangrene (FG) is an infectious disease characterized by necrotizing fasciitis of the perineal, perianal, or genital area associated with aging, male gender, diabetes mellitus (DM), alcoholism, trauma, and immunosuppression states. It can rapidly evolve into sepsis, septic shock, and multiorgan failure with a high mortality rate. We present the case of a 55-year-old man who developed a severe FG, initially assumed as an epididymo-orchitis with new-onset DM.

Thyroglossal Duct Cyst Carcinoma With Synchronous Thyroid Papillary Carcinoma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDC) are one of the most common congenital anomalies in the neck. Malignant transformation of these cysts is rare and synchronous involvement of the thyroid gland is even rarer. We report a case of synchronous occurrence of carcinoma in the thyroglossal duct cyst and thyroid gland and review the relevant literature.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Other Vascular Risk factors' Impact on Non-Motor Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease.

Background: Previous studies revealed an association between vascular comorbidities and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and the severity of motor and cognitive symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, there is a lack of studies assessing the entire spectrum of non-motor symptoms (NMS).

Objective: To investigate the relationship between vascular comorbidities and NMS in PD patients.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome in the Intensive Care Unit: A Case Report.

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome is a neurological emergency caused by dysregulation of dopaminergic neurotransmission. While it is typically characterized by muscle rigidity, fever and altered mental status, it may have a heterogeneous and non-specific presentation, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment. Treatment involves cessation of dopamine-receptor antagonists and supportive measures, but in more severe cases, bromocriptine, dantrolene, benzodiazepines and/or electroconvulsive therapy should be considered.

Nutrition Education in Portuguese Medical Students: Impact on the Attitudes and Knowledge.

Introduction: Nutrition has been underrepresented in the curriculum of many medical schools and therefore physicians do not feel adequately prepared to provide dietary counselling. The aim of the present study is to determine the impact of a Nutrition and Metabolism curricular unit on nutrition attitudes, knowledge and confidence on future clinical practice of medical students.

Material And Methods: All the students enrolled in the curricular unit (2017/2018) were invited to complete a questionnaire assessing their nutritional knowledge and eating habits at the beginning and at the end of the semester (n = 310).

Introduction: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria are ubiquitous organisms. Precise determination of infection numbers is difficult, since reporting them to public health departments is frequently not mandatory; furthermore, isolating a non-tuberculous mycobacteria does not necessarily translate into disease. The aims of this study were to ascertain non-tuberculous mycobacteria data of a tertiary hospital, determine the incidence and approach to colonization versus disease, and the incidence of predisposing comorbidities.

A case of fulminant Type 1 diabetes following anti-PD1 immunotherapy in a genetically susceptible patient.

Programmed cell death-1 protein (PD-1) is an immune checkpoint that has gained popularity in the treatment of several advanced cancers. Inhibiting this checkpoint is known to enhance immune response, but is also known to diminish immune tolerance and to increase autoimmune toxicity. We discuss a case of rapid onset fulminant Type 1 diabetes induced by treatment with anti-programmed cell death-1 monoclonal antibody, nivolumab, in a patient with late-stage non-small-cell lung adenocarcinoma.

Screening for Pompe disease in a Portuguese high risk population.

Pompe disease is a rare metabolic disorder with available enzymatic replacement therapy. Contrasting with the classic infantile form, the others subtypes have a heterogeneous presentation that makes an early and accurate diagnosis difficult. Background: Tetrabenazine (TBZ) is commonly used in hyperkinetic movement disorders. Introduction: Schwannoma or neurilemmoma is a benign peripheric nerve tumor that usually presents as a slow growing single lesion; it has origin in Schwann cells proliferation. A Young Woman with Ischemic Stroke: Should We Pay More Attention to Varicella Zoster Infection?

Ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke are recognized complications of Varicella zoster virus (VZV) infections, although uncommon and poorly documented. The authors report the case of a 31-year-old woman admitted with acute ischemic stroke of the right posterior cerebral artery and a history of a thoracic rash 1 month before. Aspirin and simvastatin were prescribed, but the patient suffered a stepwise deterioration the following days, with new areas of infarction on brain imaging.

[Portuguese Consensus on the Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment of Anaemia in Inflammatory Bowel Disease].

Introduction: Anaemia can be considered the most common extra-intestinal manifestation in inflammatory bowel disease. Nevertheless, anaemia is often under-diagnosed and under-treated both in adults and children with inflammatory bowel disease. Herein, we report the consensus statements on the management of anaemia in inflammatory bowel disease developed by the Portuguese Working Group on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (known as Grupo de Estudo da Doença Inflamatória Intestinal - GEDII) to aid clinicians in daily management of inflammatory bowel disease patients.

Multicentric Genome-Wide Association Study for Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax.

Despite elevated incidence and recurrence rates for Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax (PSP), little is known about its etiology, and the genetics of idiopathic PSP remains unexplored. To identify genetic variants contributing to sporadic PSP risk, we conducted the first PSP genome-wide association study. Two replicate pools of 92 Portuguese PSP cases and of 129 age- and sex-matched controls were allelotyped in triplicate on the Affymetrix Human SNP Array 6.
