Introduction: The current WHO classification of melanocytic tumors distinguishes 9 pathogenic routes. This classification is based on the conceptual interpretation that melanocytic tumors evolve from benign counterparts, accumulating mutations, eventually developing into melanomas with metastatic and potentially lethal capacity. In this article, we present a molecular study of 2 melanocytic tumors that suggest a "leap" from pathogenic routes IV to I.

: The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one in three women worldwide has experienced physical or sexual violence. In countries like the US, UK, and Canada, victims are often cared for by sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs), who are trained to conduct forensic exams and offer emotional support, reducing the risk of retraumatisation. Thus, the aim of this study was to describe the satisfaction of patients and healthcare professionals with SANEs' services.

Background And Aims: Parenteral nutrition (PN) composition could play a role in the management of systemic inflammatory response and intestinal barrier disruption. We aimed to evaluate changes in biomarkers of inflammation, oxidative status and intestinal permeability in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who received different PN lipid formulas.
Methods: This was a prospective study, including 94 patients with T2DM who received omega (n)-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)-enriched PN, a mixture of medium and long chain triglycerides (MCT/LCT) PN, or an olive oil-based PN.

Background: Both cigarette smoking (CGS), through its role as a benzene source, and some metabolic detoxyfiying enzymes (EDTOX) polymorphisms that hamper its inactivation, are considered as risk factors for the development of myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS) and related disorders. This study aims to confirm such associations.
Patients And Methods: We recruited 61 patients diagnosed with MDS following FAB Group criteria and 180 adults without peripheral blood cytopenia, and we analyzed: i) the crude odds-ratio (OR) for MDS between smokers and non-smokers, ii) the crude OR for MDS between homozygous individuals for the mutation NQO1C-T, or harboring deletions in the genes codyfing for GSTM1 y GSTT1, and those who did not show such genotypes, and iii) the OR for MDS between smokers and non-smokers, adjusted for other potential risk factors.

The fibroadipose vascular anomaly (FAVA) is a relatively unknown vascular anomaly in the realm of adult dermatopathology. Despite its intramuscular location, dermatologists often encounter cases, approaching them surgically under the presumption of a potential lipoma. This entity was first described in 2014, and consequently, many FAVA cases may be concealed in our archives under diagnoses of other entities that require differential diagnoses, such as intramuscular fast-flow vascular anomaly.

Regression (total or partial) is a common phenomenon in melanoma. From a pathogenic perspective, it is highly complex and only partially understood, involving aspects of both the tumor and the individual. One of the determining factors is the clonal selection of the tumor, wherein some clones within the tumor survive while others perish.

Introduction: New dialysis membranes with new properties are being developed to improve efficacy and tolerance. The hemocompatibility of a polymeric biomaterial is influenced by the layer of water at the blood membrane interface. The new dialyzer TORAY NV-U has a membrane Hydrolink™, designed to suppress platelet adhesion and to improve the hemocompatibility.

Objectives: The prognosis of bone and joint infections (BJI) caused by Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) worsens significantly in the face of fluoroquinolone-resistance. In this setting, scarce pre-clinical and clinical reports suggest that intravenous beta-lactams plus colistin may improve outcome. Our aim was to assess the efficacy and safety of this treatment in a well-characterized prospective cohort.

Introduction And Objectives: To estimate the frequency of patients with diagnoses associated with life-limiting conditions (LLCs) or complex chronic conditions (CCCs).
Methods: Retrospective mixed population-based and hospital-based cohort study. Study universe consisted of the population aged less than 18 years of an autonomous community in Spain in the 2001-2021 period; the cases were patients admitted to hospital with a diagnosis associated with LLC or CCC during this period.

Objectives: Bloodstream infections (BSI) are an important cause of mortality, although they show heterogeneity depending on patients and aetiological factors. Comprehensive and specific mortality scores for BSI are scarce. The objective of this study was to develop a mortality predictive score in BSI based on a multicentre prospective cohort.

Introduction: There are no defined criteria for deciding to remove a non-functioning indwelling pleural catheter (IPC) when lung re-expansion on chest X-ray is incomplete. Chest computed tomography (chest CT) is usually used. The objective of this work is to validate the usefulness of chest ultrasound performed by a pulmonologist and by a radiologist compared to chest CT.

Although the involvement of the nasal passages and nasal septum in cocaine users has been known for decades, a new presentation affecting the nostrils and upper lip with an inflamed appearance has recently been documented. The authors who identified this presentation termed it "cocaine-related plasma cell mucositis" due to the abundance of plasma cells in the infiltrate. In this article, we present a second case and emphasize the dermal involvement of the lip, leading us to consider the condition as a genuine dermatomucositis.

Little is known about healthcare workers' (HCW) use of healthcare services for mental disorders. This study presents data from a 16-month prospective cohort study of Spanish HCW (n = 4,809), recruited shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic onset, and assessed at four timepoints using web-based surveys. Use of health services among HCW with mental health conditions (i.

Connexins play a crucial role in the formation of gap junctions that connect cells to each other, as well as cells to the surrounding environment. In recent years, connexin 43 has been extensively studied in various human tumors. In this study, we conducted an immunohistochemical analysis to evaluate the expression of connexin in 16 dermatofibromas (DFs) and 13 dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP).

Introduction: Bipolar disorder (BD) has been reconceptualised as a progressive disorder that develops from mild to severe presentations. An empirical staging model - the Empirically Developed Clinical Staging Model for BD (EmDe-5) - was developed in a previous study. This study aims to further validate that model using a larger and more representative Spanish sample.

Objective: The availability in the literature of data related to perinatal variables in the Spanish population is very scarce. The aim of this study was to know the evolution of perinatal health indicators according to the risk groups of prematurity and birth weight, the proportion of multiple births, caesarean section and stillbirths.
Methods: We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study of births in eleven hospitals in Castilla y León (January 2015 to June 2020).

Introduction: Teriflunomide is a once-daily oral immunomodulator approved for relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) or relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS; depending on the local label), based on extensive evidence from clinical trials and a real-world setting on efficacy, tolerability and patient-reported benefits. The TERICARE study assessed the impact of teriflunomide treatment over 2 years on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and some of the most common and disabling symptoms of MS, such as fatigue and depression.
Methods: This prospective observational study in Spain included RRMS patients treated with teriflunomide for ≤ 4 weeks.

Understanding nail pathology is complex for general pathologists and even for those dermatopathologists who do not receive many nail samples in their laboratories. In this article, we attempt to review some of the primary entities in nail pathology with the aid of modern interpretations of nail histology and embryology. We also provide diagrams that can aid in comprehending this field of pathology.
