Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a naturally derived hydrogel that has recently paved its way in several biomedical applications. Despite its remarkable tissue-like properties, BNC does not express innate anticoagulant or antimicrobial properties; therefore, appropriate post-modification procedures are required to prevent nonspecific adhesion and enhance the hemocompatibility properties of BNC-based biointerface. Here, we report a new class of flexible, lubricant-infused BNC membranes with superior antithrombotic and antibacterial properties.

Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to assess the accuracy of different bone scintigraphy imaging techniques for diagnosing transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CM), revealing shifts in accuracy over time.* -
  • Out of 428 studies, 23 were selected for analysis, encompassing 3,954 patients, with 39.6% diagnosed with ATTR-CM; visual planar grading and quantitative analysis showed higher accuracy than the heart-to-contralateral (HCL) ratio.* -
  • The findings indicate that bone scintigraphy is highly effective for diagnosing ATTR-CM, with variability in study results largely due to differing disease prevalence, and highlight the need for precise methods in low-risk populations.*

Objectives: Care for JIA patients has been transformed in the biologics era; however, biologics carry important (although rare) risks and are costly. Flares after biological withdrawal are seen frequently, yet there is little clinical guidance to identify which patients in clinical remission can safely have their biologic discontinued (by stopping or tapering). We examined what characteristics of the child or their context are important to pediatric rheumatologists when making the decision to discuss withdrawal of biologics.

May 2023

Calgary Prion Research Unit, Department of Comparative Biology & Experimental Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Calgary, 3330 Hospital Drive NW, Calgary, AB, T2N 4Z6, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • No effective treatments currently exist for Alzheimer's disease (AD), but researchers are exploring a new therapeutic approach using peptide aptamer 8 (PA8) to target the interaction between amyloid beta oligomers (AβO) and the cellular prion protein (PrP).
  • In laboratory tests, PA8 was shown to block AβO from binding to PrP and reduce neurotoxicity in nerve cells, leading to improved memory and learning in a mouse model of AD.
  • Further studies demonstrated that PA8 treatment reduced levels of AβO and amyloid plaques in the brain while mitigating harmful signaling pathways associated with neurodegeneration, highlighting its potential as a novel AD treatment.

Traditional drug design focuses on specific biological targets where specific receptors or biomarkers are overexpressed by cancer cells. Cancer cells circumvent the interventions by activating survival pathways and/or downregulating cell death pathways for their survival. A priori activation of apoptosis pathways of tumor (AAAPT) is a novel tumor-sensitizing technology that sensitizes tumor cells that are not responding well to the current treatments by targeting specific survival pathways involved in the desensitization of tumor cells and tries to revive them selectively in cancer cells, sparing normal cells.
